Swan Song

She trawled the woods to find her lost heart
Out of view and hidden deep underground
Still beating, wrapped in muddied cloth
The Queen was once more born

But returned to find the moon had already risen
Overnight her court had fractured and decayed
Heretic! they cried in unison
And marched their unfaithful Queen away

The Queen tried to contemplate such a revolution
Her once loyal subjects had fled
Heavy is the head that wears a dirty crown
For she fixated on her own swallowed breath

Hers was a reign bloodied by ancient ideals
Forced to abdicate her throne and sceptre
An eternity of solitude exchanged
The Queen wept for the new monarch

Life unencumbered by her kingdoms glare
She spent her final days in harrowed remorse
The Queen knifed out her poisoned heart
Buried it once more under the cold woodland floor
