Below is the poem of the day entitled Confessional which was written by poet Richard Lamoureux.

"Hail Mary full of grace"
These words you demand of me
I sit in this dark box
talking to a shadow
Eyes that never meet
untouched by your hand

You say my secrets are safe
I wish to be set free
yet there is no resolution for me
This is a fridged place
an impersonal cold box
the walls close in
I feel no relief from sin
You ask me to begin

"Forgive me father
for I have sinned"
I have had impure thoughts
I have done things in the dark
The beast has left it's mark

You sit there
do you understand
You speak softly and demand
Tell me more
Tell me more
here your secrets are safe

Why do you sit there
in the dark
separated from me
Is it somehow easier to see
I'm sorry
It makes no sense
the wall becomes a fence

In the end we are both just men
we will sin again
Hail Marys won't be nearly enough
only God can forgive our stuff
I will talk directly to Him
through Jesus I can begin
His blood spilled for me
That's how I know I'm free
sweet Jesus
It is only him
to whom I confess
the one who paid the price
He cleared my debt

It isn't mother Mary
or a man in a robe
who sets me free

So I walk away

not believing

and unforgiven

by man!

A POTD worthy of the name. Stark, harsh, real, fresh, commanding, unfurling. Let no man come between you and Christ. The confessional box reminds one of an upright coffin. A crucifix shows a hanging man. The Lord of Light is risen, not dead/dying and stifled in the dark. Many have walked your path. :-)))

Your poem hits hard Richard. I was always afraid of the confessional as a youth and then they started face to face, that was even worse. Now I talk directly to God in my prayers and confessions.

Having been raised a Catholic, I can totally relate to this poem. Indeed, the Bible does teach that it is God alone that can forgive sin. I believe every doctrine out there needs to be weighed against the Scripture, and if it contradicts, no matter how appealing it may sound, it's not of God. Congrats on a fine POTD!

God loves you Richard and so do I. I Profess to be of faith, how I choose to practice it is between me and my God. I am Catholic. Have you never asked someone to remember you in prayer? That's what we are asking Mary or the Priest to do. Peace be with you, I normally don't comment on religious or political writes and probable won't in the future. they generally only lead to stepping on someone's beliefs. Congratulations for your honor...

I am so pleased your poem will now be read by so many more. "Only God can forgive..." Your words are the truth, Richard, and in order for Him to forgive any of us, we must forgive others, not only in word, but in deed.

you epitomized the person in a confessional; Great Write, Richard. As a Catholic, I have less reluctance to confess my sins at this time of my life although I don't very often. But it always depends on the priest.

Hi Ralph, being Catholic I hope this piece is not offensive as this is my own questioning and I realize it may be from a limited understanding of your faith. Thanks for commenting.

I guess many people do fit that category, but if one does not preach, then one can't be labelled one I suppose.. However, I guess there are many different form of preaching.. God loves all his children, even those who stray from his path.. Would be a beautiful world if we all could live by his word and follow his teachings.. or at lease live in some form of peace..

Yes, I endeavour to myself however pride tends to be the biggest pitfall. Thanks for commenting, I appreciate you weighing in with your thoughts.

An interesting bio, faith should always be personal to a person, and we are all different in our beliefs and how we follow them.. The most important thing I suppose is to practice what we preach, if not, we are seen as hypocrites.. This should do very well in the contest..

Thanks Silent. I fear at times all of us fit the description of the Hypocrite. I'm thankful my God loves me dispite my shortcomings.

But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly. Matthew 6:6 KJV...I so agree with you Richard. Contact with God should be for everyone on Earth and in direct communion. : ) Beautiful! : )

Richard, you are a man whose thoughts mirror my own. Priests are just men, and it's to God alone that we should confess and expect to be forgiven if we are truly repentant, and only through His son should we ask to be heard. You've written a wonderful witness to your faith, as well as mine.
