Magritte The Empty Mask

it's clouded
obscured
        just enough variety
    to throw you off
 there's no such thing
           as a penetrating gaze
    no beyond
 nor here or there
         just this

uncomfortable static

I can run my fingers round the edges
     see my hand
  in front of my face
              but my feet are planted
the composition tells of up
     and through
            I feel one dimensionally seen
if we two could get higher
                         negotiate ledge
                                    after ledge
         rise up in a balloon
just for a moment see further
above the canopies that hem us in
     safe from the licking flames
                and the prying eyes
we'd understand the irregularity of shape
the truth of corners and frames
            how a veil isn't a cage
we can add it all up
       let the leaves fall
   the flames burn a path
send smoke signals into the sky
curtains can become ropes to climb down
                   they'll be footholds for up

across is missing

        I realise that now
    all this searching for depth
and I just hadn't looked around
      successfully distracted
