A Lost Symbol
It was fifth amongst our symbols,
and most popular of all -
its small form curly as a cat,
its big form sharp and tall.
It could signal thrills or panic
if its pitch was slightly high,
or simply join two consonants
which sought to unify.
It was what you got at school if you
did not try as you might,
the magic in a formula
of mass and racing light,
but also an illicit drug
(a fairly strong drug too),
so a court said, “Go to prison!”
Don’t you miss it? Oh, I do.
