Elfin War Contest

Their world at war, they close their eyes
Elfin drinkers drink as armies rise
To know their views I ask a question
Blinkered, they deny suggestion

That lives will change as fighters fight
They sing and dance into the night
They rest in glow of tavern's light
Forgetting the world and all it's blight

The only thing they wish to discuss
Is competing ales, surely treasonous
But I'm here now, let's not make a fuss
So I drank some beers, and those beers were thus:

A ruby mild - fruity and sweet
My troubles mellowed despite defeat
I forgot the carnage out in the street
Safely ensconced on comfy seat

A best bitter, the brewers pride
Tavern next door looked on green eyed
The sounds subdued, didn't look outside
As aware of beers I'd not yet tried

Stormy stout, so dark and true
I watched it swirl as death toll grew
As all around shared hazy view
And talk of war here was taboo

A summer ale, now there's a thing
Far too tart with lemony zing
This tavern I'm not worshipping
"Show me the way to go home" I sing

But as I exit all again becomes clear
I remember why I travelled here
It was to understand war, not drink beer
This is their way to make horrors of war disappear...
