Questioning Death's Plan

When it’s your turn to walk past this realms existence
and it’s time to take your final curtain call in life—
how long do you get to say goodbye to loved ones?
One minute…five minutes…more or less?
And what if you’re not quite ready for the journey?
Can you bargain for more time? Not much—
just a few more minutes to gather your thoughts together
and make the most of your last moments on Earth.

Will the right words flow off your tongue like lilted poetry
or will you trip over your thoughts as you once did in life?

Does it depend on the individual who is about to take their last breath
or the one who is there to guide them to the beyond?
Or is fate’s hourglass set in stone
and no amount of begging or pleading can turn it upside down
and add more colorful sand to your fleeting life span?

Is the end peaceful?
Does the lady of death embrace you in her feathered onyx wings
and softly place the kiss of death upon your reluctant lips?
Or does sheer panic and unknowing terror
play out before your wide doe eyes
like a broken movie reel set on eternal repeat?

At the pearly gates—if that is your final destination—
is your name on the guest list?
Do you get the VIP treatment when you pass through…
depending on who you knew when you were alive?

And was your life worth living?
Did you travel the world…
feed the hungry…
cure the common cold…
fix all the wrongs and make them right…
change for the better?

Would it matter if you did?
After all, we all die someday.
Some of us sooner than later.
I’m already dead as I finish this line…
