Goodbye Mr Moon

They took the measurement daily
Precisely on the stroke of noon
By bouncing a laser beam
Off the surface of the moon
The results were recorded
With great precision and care
Not just yet any reason for
Anxiety, worry or despair.
On the time scale of a human
Still Many eons and eons away
But on the Galactic time scale
Not much further than a day
The moon would escape from
The Earth’s weak gravity pull
And on that fateful day the Earth
Would feel the effects in full.
The delicate equilibrium
Be destroyed as it moved on
And green inhabitable Earth
Probably be irrevocably gone.
Mankind’s vanity of being special
Gone as it slowly died away
But on a galactic time scale
They’d existed less than half a day.
The planet would still serenely orbit
A world now ostensibly asleep
But who know what may be stirring
In the now static oceans’ deeps.
