WASTE NOT - WANT NOT

In those days we had to make do and mend.
Milk bottles we would rinse out and return.
Kellogg’s cartons we collect for children
to cut and paste and learn creative art.
Rinsed food cans collected by rag-bone man.
Last night’s unburnt cinders we use today.
Blue paper-bag take back to the Coop
to be refilled with two pounds of sugar.
Pop bottles we return for three farthings.
Old clothes we cut to turn into rag rugs.
Newspapers, roll and twist for firelighters.
Horse droppings from the road we must collect
to spread on our gardens to feed the plants.
In those days we had to make do and mend.
