About Jan Allison

Thought I better get round to writing a bit about myself.

I'm married and live on the Isle of Man

My poetry journey began in November 2013 after my husband was diagnosed with cancer. The first poem I wrote was called was Splendid Isolation. This was written after we returned to the Isle of Man after his surgery in England. I felt so alone and vulnerable in the accommodation  - all I really needed was someone to talk to face to face and maybe have a hug! I posted a few poems on a friends facebook page - mainly humerous poems . An on-line friend Jenny Brewer saw my poems and kept telling me to join here. It took about 3 weeks of her asking me if i had joined to pluck up the courage to finally post and 'Just Desserts'  was the first poem I posted here - it is based on a true experience! Since then my life has been a whirl.  In Jared Pickett's collaboration I teamed up with Darren Watson and we wrote together collaboratively as JaDazzle United.

I adore penguins - the animals not the biscuits!
Loveeeee tall men with greying hair
I love baking/cooking
I like to potter in the garden - need more time to commit to it but have an aged mother who needs me more than my garden does
Adore most types of music - will give anything a listen
Best ever gig - Knebworth 1986 when 'Queen' headlined

PLAGERISM ON THE WEB - UPDATED

Blog Posted:2/11/2017 4:48:00 PM

LAST NIGHT I GOOGLED A HAIKU POEM I HAD WRITTEN IN 2014.

I DISCOVERED IT HAD BEEN A WINNER IN A CONTEST IN AN AMERICAN NEWSPAPER... BUT IT HAD BEEN SUBMITTED BY THE PRIZEWINNER AS THEIR OWN WORK. IT SADDENS ME THAT SOMEONE CAN STOOP SO LOW.

I AM THANKFUL THAT TPS COPYRIGHT OUR POEMS SO I WAS ABLE TO CONTACT THE EDITOR OF THE NEWSPAPER AND PROVE THE POEM WAS MINE. THE EDITOR OF THE PAPER RESPONDED TO ME STRAIGHT AWAY AND IS LOOKING INTO IT.

16TH FEBRUARY

I HAVE RECEIVED A MAIL FROM THE EDITOR AND THE PERSON WHO USED MY POEM HAS ASKED FOR THE POEM TO BE ATTRIBUTED TO ME.  I  AM REALLY DELIGHTED  THAT THE PAPER HAVE DEALT WITH THIS SO QUICKLY AND THE EDITOR WILL BE PRINTING SOMETHING IN THE PAPER ON FRIDAY.

The Internet has become the Universe of traffic. We'll never Police it all, and all that we find, there's more behind it. So best one can do if it's Plagerising, is knock it on the head when you reveal.

just come from a site Jan who publish as well foward publishing. It became a battle ground. never known such bullying and trolls and plagerism. last weekend was a nightmare. i was picked on with other good people by so many. people left n droves. the Police was called and site closed down. one of bullies came here and started bullying again. got banned. beware, the rot may end up here.Had my work pinched too, but I'm no great poet. i question their mentality. Someone left the asylum door oppn. Pete.

Gee Peter I am so sorry you have had to suffer like that - looks like there are bad apples around who want to spoil it for everyone. Having been bullied in the past I do hope it doesn't continue on here:-( hugs Janxx

How evil. sadly it happens all the time. But so pleased it was a winner and it got sorted out. great poets like yourself and others, inspire us all, but to the less talented, they can only dream od such writing. well done. Pete.

Your comment made me smile - i am no great poet but I hate my work being taken and someone else takes the credit for it - at least it is sorted now and the poem has been credited to me:-) hugs jan xx

"THE PERSON WHO USED MY POEM HAS ASKED FOR THE POEM TO BE ATTRIBUTED TO ME." Well, how magnanimous of them! : P Ah Jan - it really just makes me feel tired, that people feel the need to steal like that. I can see why - greed for prizes if any are offered, or personal recognition. However, woe be unto them, for the most dire cheating is that which they do to themselves, they remove themselves from the creative process, how deep the theft they do not yet know.

I agree with you Doug they are only cheating themselves - I found the same poem on another site and the guy had even done a description of how the poem was written - total BS it was cut and pasted from the web with one word changed lol:-( hugs Jan xx

Jan..That is sad...On the other hand..now that its settled Good for yousweetheart.Do you know I was reading poetry on another site and I found a poem which I recognized immediately that it belonged to a souper here..A woman had posted it as if it was her's..I confronted her..after telling my poet friend here about it...And She apologized and put it down..And this woman acted as a good woman..like a holy saint on another site.Bull-Shitter..Made me so mad..So far anyone who used my poems..asked permission or used my copyright...Only once I had an issue..Of someone called 'Poetry On Demand 'on facebook who posted my poem ..but I tackled it as well.I am happy that now yr issue is solved. Good for you Charma! I don't mind anyone using my poems as long as I am credited as the writer - I have had a few requests on soup mail and I always say yes:-) hugs Jan xx
Date: 2/15/2017 11:49:00 PM
Since reading your blog, Jan, I have found one of my poems plagiarized twice and another plagiarized once online. They weren't winners if contests but it's still infuriating. I sent an email to one of the sites to have the poem removed, but the other two are on a site called Poem Hunter, and I can't seem to comment or email without joining the site so I'm not sure what to do about it. I don't mind if others use my poems and credit me, but these instances are blatant plagiarism, my poems used word for word. :(

Whoever plagerised your poems 'hunted' down excellent work Rhonda as your poetry is so beautiful. I found one of mine on all poetry and they immediately removed it when I sent them the link to TPS so you could try contacting Poem Hunter site direct. Some may say I am making a fuss about the fact our work is stolen as we are just amateur poets, but its a matter of principle.:-) hugs Jan xx

Jan, maybe you can look at this another way: you're ready to start submitting your work to haiku magazines (i.e. frog pond) and enter some contests! The plagiarism sucks (I've had my online poetry used many times, but never plagiarized, well, as far as I know.) When I post online, now, I basically write the poem off-- I will never get paid for those poems anyway as posting online is self-publishing free to the public to read, and though the poems (or stories, blogs, etc) is the property of the writer, people treat the material as basically public domain (because who can afford to fight for copyright for a poem?) I hope you go for it ... start publishing! Cyndi

I decided to check and yes it seems they just feel free to take them.. one program is using it as a presentation of my poem "Batter UP" & also my Bio... giving Soup and I credit "SHOCKED" two of my Haikus for their own use one to sell a product the other to sell her web-site leaving my name off.... I only checked a handful..

Yes that's the poem and its flattering that it won especially as it is one of my early works and I would now classify it as a 3 line poem and not a proper haiku but its the fact that it wasn't her poem to use in the first place that is the bug bear ... of course its got more widely read which is great but unfortunately its not under my name:-( hugs jan xx

I wish I were surprised, but I am not. I have always imagined teenagers desperate to complete an English assignment and the love sick as potential culprits! Can anyone advise the best(s) sites to check our work? I have found many, but all want money I do not have. Good for you, Jan, for hunkering down with your truth until all emerged as 'right'. Date: 2/11/2017 8:15:00 PM
Jan, that's awful but not surprising. It's too easy to plagiarize (we've even seen it here on PS), but it's also easy to check. Anyone judging a writing contest or publishing a piece should take the time to check the work online. I can't understand why they wouldn't. I hope this gets resolved and a retraction is written in the paper. If the person is embarassed, maybe they won't do it again.

If you google a few lines you will find lots of your stuff out there, many people are good and credit you but this was 100% my words but with their name. We may be amateur poets but our poems are our own hard work and its sad to see other's try to pass it off as their own . Last year I found the same poem on another poetry site but as soon as I sent the link showing it was copyrighted here they removed it from the man who had plagerised it. It is great TPS have given us that little symbol by our name:-) hugs Jan xx
