I am thankful for Contest Sponsored by Tania Kitchin 12/02/24

I am thankful for the surgeon who saved my husband’s life Without his intervention I could have been a grieving wife I admit that I detested reading poetry in my younger days Shakespeare’s works bored me; I still can’t give them praise! I am thankful that I began writing at a time of awful stress My husband was in surgery, my fears I could not suppress I started to enjoy poetry, and I have embraced this change The fact I adore writing poems, I still find pretty strange! I am thankful for the pal who urged me to join Poetry Soup She loved my sense of humour, and my many poems on poop I’m blessed with many ‘souper’ pals, and want folk to know it This self confessed poetry hater is now a twice published poet!

A delightful read! Wonderfully penned. It"s during times of stress that we try to find a way to vent our feelings. I really enjoyed your sense of humour and is beautifully expressed. Congratulations on your win Jan & all the best.

So cute and humorous as well! Who doesn't find necessary Bodily functions funny?! While I was fascinated with Shakespeare and Poe...I too was a self professed poetry "disliker". Lol... it's the times of greatest human struggle that we search for those who have gone through the same things, have the same feelings etc... and poetry is the cathartic treasure! It brings us together. Xo

Wonderful! Your past disdain for poetry strukes a humourous contrast and makes poetic journey a challenging but compelling course. The inspiration you convey in your last line is truly commendable .This poem gives me light and hope. Definitely a fave! Warm wishes dear Jan. ^__^

Yes it is pretty ironic isn't it ! I do have poetry in my genes, my aunt and uncle both wrote witty (naughty poetry) and after my dad died my told me she used to write as did her mother, It just took a traumatic experience for it to surface in me and now I love trying to make folk smile with 2 silly books and have learned so so so much since I joined soup as I;d never written limericks before:-) hugs Jan xx

Wonderful poem and story Jan. I would vote for you as poet laureate and ambassador to the UN. It's a pleasure to see how you can appreciate your position and let yourself feel good about what you have done. I just ordered a copy of the book from Amazon this past moment. You should see the total ordered go up. Hopefully the stuff in the bowl will continue to go down!

Jan this rhyme is so sincere and honest and let's the reader know the trials you have gone through during your husbands fight and surgery with Cancer. I am glad you found your outlet and you took your friends advice to join the Soup. I am like you in a way, I don't read Shakespeare but I enjoy writing and having people enjoy what I write. Like you I do it cause it is fun. You have a great sense of humor that we all can appreciate. You lift us up and make us laugh and gasp lol. I love this Rhyme.

aww thanks Michael for the comment and I do hope you enjoy the book - the contest is a little naughty at times and lots of toilet humour. Since his surgery in 2013 the cancer has fought back and he had radio therapy in 2019 and again in 2023 but we never dwell on it, he gets treated and we get on with life, he now has 6 monthly scans in the UK they are very specialised but we know at the moment he is cancer free. You have to grab every opportunity in life and we enjoy every day. As for writing poetry i never ever dreamed i would pick up my pen let alone write a book, but now I have written two and this current one is definitely my last. hugs jan xx

Pity you don't love Shakespeare. I studied him a lot at University. Did not know there was a contest on the subject. But then I'm off contests these days. Hugs.,

That's a cool and interesting story, Jan. I feel much the same. I can't believe I like writing poetry, and I have a hard time understanding Shakespeare. It's also great that it helped you in crisis.

I never got to grips with the bard, had to study it at school (yawn) I never read poetry until i joined soup - I had never heard of haiku and learned so many new forms and wrote my first limericks and now Ive published 2 books - oh how life throws us curved balls but I have benefitted so so much since i picked up my pen:-) hugs Jan xx

- Cancer is a life-changing disease for those affected and their loved ones... (a tough time, Jan)... your positive attitude was the key to change and success - When the bad days become many, it can be difficult to see a way out, but together as a family you made it :) - Much to be grateful and proud of :) - hugs
