Andrea Dietrich grew up in Iowa and now resides in Utah with a spouse and two cats. She has two grown children and six grandchildren. Having graduated BYU with a Spanish major/ESL minor, she has spent most of her adult life teaching. It wasn't until 2000 that she began writing in earnest and discovering her "niche" as a writer of lyrical poetry. The internet opened up a new world for her, and she has spent two decades now participating in poetry clubs, acting as a judge of poetry contests for various magazines, for the website Shadow Poetry, and for Poetry Soup.

Ms. Dietrich has won numerous awards, as well as the title Poet of the Year 2008, from the Yahoo group, Poetry For Thought. In addition, she has won prizes from the magazines Lucidity, Bell's Letters, Art with Words, Poets at Work and SP Quill, the magazine for which she wrote grammar and poetry articles as well as movie reviews and for which she acted as poetry editor for the head editor Marie Summers for six years. Many of her poems appeared in Shadows Ink, a yearly published series of chapbooks of award winning poetry as well as in numerous other anthologies. Her short stories appeared in many issues of SP Quill and much of her poetry was published in eight chapbooks (no longer sold online).

Since coming to Poetry Soup, Ms. Dietrich has been both contest sponsor and winner of numerous contests. In 2010, her poem "Cinder Girl" was first place winner of Soup's International contest (these contests are no longer held).  A song was created from her lyrics "Honeymoon Serenade" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WDWxc4cpHDc) and two movies have been made featuring the poetry of Andrea Dietrich: "A Tale of Fire and Ice" (a 4 min. Z-Film Fest Project, 2014) and the full length movie "Six Days of Sistine" in which 20 poems of Ms. Dietrichs serve as the thoughts of two characters played by Jamie Campbell Bower and Elarica Johnson (directed by Richard J. Perry, 2019) https://www.imdb.com/title/tt7710360/

So Shocked to Learned ONLY TODAY of a Fellow Soup member's death

Blog Posted:7/18/2020 5:51:00 PM

I can find no obituary for Matt, but  here is a link I am adding a day later to an article done about him through his poetry group: Community Access Art Collective: https://communityaccessart.org/collections/matthew-anish  It shows a really cool picture of him! (thanks, Jan, for finding this for me).

I hope some of you are familiar with fellow poet Matthew Anish. Through the years I have kept up with probably nearly every poem he ever wrote because he was fairly consistent in visiting me, and I would always be looking for poems of his to comment back on. He and I were both ESL teachers and would chat about that from time to time.

Today it crossed my mind. Why have I not heard from Matt in a while?? I think it's been maybe half a year, and OMG, time just gets away from me. Something made me check on him today, and I came across a woman named Linda Suchy who had joined Soup and posted only two poems since March. Well, she had commented to Matt on his last poem a few months after I had done it . Apparently she had not known he was close to death either. She mentions in her comment to him that they were in "Voices Israel" Group of poets and says RIP to him (having just learned of his death).

Matt would often write of his Jewish heritage and his love of baseball and of postcards! He even had articles or poems published in New York City newspapers. Through the years, Matt and I had exchanged a few  chapbooks with each other. I always thought of him as the BIG APPLE poet because his poems are like little vignettes of New York life. He dearly loved the metropolis where he lived and that he wrote so fondly about.

I have taken the liberty of posting his final poem from back in January. It's so ironic to me that it had to do with illness of a friend. Please, if anyone has not yet done the Uncontest contest and is looking for a poet to add to Anthony Biaanco's tribute list, please look into Matt and his matter-of-fact upbeat way of looking at life through his poetry.

Matt, you are missed. My condolences to your family.  I am so sorry I did not even notice you were gone until today.

When Close Friends Take Ill

When close friends take ill
It is a real "bummer"
The next worse thing to taking ill yourself
When close friends near death
It can really blow your mind
Turn on your love light before it is too late!
For we are only granted a few moments
in which to enjoy the sun - the ocean - the countryside
the metropolis
So avoid hate and take a deep breath
For whatever path you choose I wish that
The force be with you! So you can endure the loss of close friends
And continue onward on the difficult road of life!

Matthew Anish

I remember Matthew, Andrea. I recall him commenting on some of my poems away back in the early days, and I to his. So sad to read he's passed away. I know any year is sad when we lose someone, but this year with all this Covid kinda makes it hit home harder - R. I . P. Poetry Matt - thanks for the memories, James :(

I remember Matthew. Many years ago when I first joined Poetry Soup, he would comment on a few of my poems and I commented on a few of his. So sorry to hear this news. I am keeping his family in my thoughts and prayers. Thank you Andrea, for letting us know. Hugs, Brandy

Andrea, I did not know Matt, I am sure he never commented on my poetry, not do I recall seeing his posted, but I am still sad to hear of his passing, sometimes people just disappear from poetry soup and we never know why, thanks for finding out why in this case. He wrote lovely poetry for sure. _Constance

yes, it seems that different people just end up connecting with totally different poets. I wish I had time to get to know everyone here but I can barely keep up with the friends who visit me now. So I do not meet new people unless they knock on my door. Then once they are in, they are IN!! (as long as they want to be. I lose a lot of those kinds of poets too)

Thanks, Craig. Maybe you never knew him. His picture is at the link jan provided which I put at the top of this article. He reminds me of a beatnic poet and they kind of portray him that way in the article!

Thank you for your notification of Matt's death. I did not know him, but the world is always a little sadder place when the voice of a talented poet is stilled. Even though his pen is stilled, we have a treasure of his writings. May he rest in peace embraced in God's loving arms.

He was my age, Rob. I think maybe the exact same year! I believe last year he spoke of an illness he was having. I wish he had soupmailed me he was sick again. It's always so shocking to me when I learn someone I have communicated for such a long time has died.
Date: 7/18/2020 8:17:00 PM
How devastating to find out that way that a friend has died. My deepest condolences to his family, and to you, Andrea:-( I don't believe I've ever interacted with him. May his soul R.I.P.

John, maybe your other entry had been a popular poet that others had already honored. In that case, I am very pleased that you will add him to the list of tributes! Thanks, my friend.

I hope someone uses his poetry in the uncontest to honor him. I already entered it with the poem of another friend of mine who died three years ago.
