Notes About The Poem

For "My Inner Voice Told Me" Contest of  Anoucheka Gangabissoon

This is based on a true story. It actually happened to my sister when I was away at college and she was frequenting the dance club in my home town. there is a lot more to the story, but this is the gist of it. I am speaking as my sister in this poem.

My Inner Voice Told Me

There was a D.J. at a club where I
would go some weekend nights and dance till late.
Not gorgeous, but an entertaining guy,
he called me up and asked me on a date.

It took me by surprise. I thought why not?
Something inside me did not feel right though,
My inner voice told me perhaps I ought
to just stay home. Doubt grew. I dared not go.

A few days later, on the news I heard
that guy who’d called me was the suspect in
a murder that had recently occurred.
To think that with that man I could have been
and stabbed to death like his victim was!
Heed your inner voice if it gives you pause.

Bundy was also in Ohio?? Wow. I thought he only hit Washington, Utah, Florida and maybe Colorado. The guy in THIS story. I think his murder was his first and only. I wish my sisters even knew his name so I could research this one I wrote about

With some folk you can just tell somethings amiss, she was lucky, too many women fall foul. Spooky story well told.

One get goosebumps reading the narrative. I'm glad your sister followed her gut feeling and wasn't harmed.

It was weird because I heard of this years later. I had been at college when it happened to a younger sister of mine. Other things are involved in the story but I had to keep it sonnet length. Thanks

Whew Andrea. Good thing she heeded her inner voice. Scary. I used to work with a woman whose cousin was murdered by Ted Bundy. Excellent sonnet for the story.

Andrea, very interesting story indeed. We do get feelings about people. Good that sis was able to trust her own. Thanks for sharing this one. It may help some of us to consider our feelings and what they may be telling us. Smiles!!

I'm glad your sister followed that gut feeling, and wasn't harmed. I think the inner voice is actually the subconscious, and that the subconscious is more observant.

Wow, thank God. Sometimes we must listen to that inner voice, you are so right.

Sometimes inner voices help. You should not date anyone without a background check. School friends are excluded.

Always listen to your inner self, it's what it's there for.
