Andrea Dietrich grew up in Iowa and now resides in Utah with a spouse and two cats. She has two grown children and six grandchildren. Having graduated BYU with a Spanish major/ESL minor, she has spent most of her adult life teaching. It wasn't until 2000 that she began writing in earnest and discovering her "niche" as a writer of lyrical poetry. The internet opened up a new world for her, and she has spent two decades now participating in poetry clubs, acting as a judge of poetry contests for various magazines, for the website Shadow Poetry, and for Poetry Soup.

Ms. Dietrich has won numerous awards, as well as the title Poet of the Year 2008, from the Yahoo group, Poetry For Thought. In addition, she has won prizes from the magazines Lucidity, Bell's Letters, Art with Words, Poets at Work and SP Quill, the magazine for which she wrote grammar and poetry articles as well as movie reviews and for which she acted as poetry editor for the head editor Marie Summers for six years. Many of her poems appeared in Shadows Ink, a yearly published series of chapbooks of award winning poetry as well as in numerous other anthologies. Her short stories appeared in many issues of SP Quill and much of her poetry was published in eight chapbooks (no longer sold online).

Since coming to Poetry Soup, Ms. Dietrich has been both contest sponsor and winner of numerous contests. In 2010, her poem "Cinder Girl" was first place winner of Soup's International contest (these contests are no longer held).  A song was created from her lyrics "Honeymoon Serenade" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WDWxc4cpHDc) and two movies have been made featuring the poetry of Andrea Dietrich: "A Tale of Fire and Ice" (a 4 min. Z-Film Fest Project, 2014) and the full length movie "Six Days of Sistine" in which 20 poems of Ms. Dietrichs serve as the thoughts of two characters played by Jamie Campbell Bower and Elarica Johnson (directed by Richard J. Perry, 2019) https://www.imdb.com/title/tt7710360/

Is it true...?

Blog Posted:8/1/2024 1:03:00 PM

I have always been curious why some poets' pages show these words: Poet has turned off commenting.

Today a friend informed me that they know of poets like this for whom that phrase does not occur, and when you go to their poetry, it does not say: Poet has turned off commenting.  This poet friend gave me an example of one such poet that some of their  friends  are able to comment to, ,yet they are not able to comment to him, and neither am I.

If this is true, I feel sad to know that some poets here have me blocked from even commenting to their poems while other poets here CAN leave comments. What is the sense in this? Sure disappointng to me if this is true.

I want to share how I overcame a challenging time in my marriage. My husband and I were facing serious misunderstandings that nearly led to divorce. Feeling hopeless, I searched for love quotes online and found inspiration that gave me hope. After reaching out for help and following some advice, my husband surprisingly returned within 24 hours, sincerely asking for my forgiveness and wanting to rebuild our relationship. If you're facing similar struggles, I encourage you to seek support. It truly can make a difference! psychicspellshrine@gmail.com or WhatsApp: +12133525735

Ok I saw it. I do know a person who was afraid to enter your contest because she was blocked. I will let her know you do not discriminate in your contests. I think s few sponsors discriminate, so I admire those who do not. Also I recall the soupmail now that you were referring to. I was able to enter your last Suzette Prime because you made it easy for me to understand when I read your example of short version . That was a cool contest.

I don't think anyone has blocked me and I sincerely hope that I have blocked no one. Even if the comment is rude or insensitive. "Keep your friends close and your enemies closer." Love reading your poems Andrea, and I learn from you. :)

I don't knowi if anyone ever wrote a hate poem about me. I sure hope not. I think you have changed since I first knew you, Tommy. I wish those hating on you would be able to stop hating. For me, if someone bothers me, the best policy is to just ignore them.

I only block those who write nasty poems about me. I'm with Andrea. Who needs correspondence with crazies and haters?

Thanks, Linda. I had to block maybe 4 people in over 14 years. A small number these were truly insane people for example, one went to soupmail and threatened to kill me. I don't block people who disagree with me but I don't tolerate crazy people. One wrote lots of vulgarities to me. So nutso!

Well it can happen Andrea.? I did it once by mistake on a phone..Because the blog icon and The eye icon are too close.' Yet it is a way of Cancelling poets i'd guess? For others.? The Seep of common culture is very persuasive it Seems.? I guess the youngest will be the more Succeptable ones.?? I have no one blocked Btw.. And would ask any who would think of Doing it..To actually mention any gripe? And See if it can be ironed out.?

I agree . We should not block if someone disagrees with us but I think some are unaware they have even blocked us. They need to check blocked port area regularly.
Date: 8/3/2024 11:07:00 PM
Andrea you have many, many poets that love your poetry and have great admiration for you, and recognize the effort and success that you have and continue to express. Sometimes by error we block someone by accident, sometimes on purpose, either way it is all good. Reach out to the Poetry Soup Team and ask what your asking us. Good luck...You will get a respond from them...

I did a test of one woman who has me blocked. I know with her it is deliberate because she suddenly stopped placing me in contests around maybe 10 years ago. At this same time I began to notice she turned off comments. All this time I was thinking others could not respond to her either, but now talking with others, I realize they can comment to her but I cannot. It disappoints me that a nice lady blocked me but it is what it is. I think she chose to believe rumors about me from around the time she stopped placing me in her contests and I know this because her best friend got angry at me for an innocent question I asked her friend in Soupmail. Just really weird that s Christian woman chooses to hate me.

Andrea, I know some people turn off comments on purpose for whatever reason, that's their choice. But, blocking is something else, it does happen by accident sometimes, and the person is not even aware, and horrified when they find out but the question is how to make them aware ? Constance

Chances are that it is accidental. I accidentally blocked some poets on a few occasions. Most understand but one of them, I forget who, she took deep offence even after I explained my position. Perhaps PS Admin should configure software to ask for a confirmation when such an action is inadvertently done.

I think you are referring to me Seeker. At the time I felt justified in being upset, because many had blocked me because of the falsehoods told by one person, and at the time you accidentally blocked me, favourable comments you had made on my poems also were deleted. Its water under the bridge now and was soon after the incident, but being blocked isnt the nicest thing that can happen to a person. No ill feelings were ever held.

I can understand your hurt and frustration, Andrea. You're such an even keeled person that is hard for me to understand why anyone would block you unless it is inadvertently. Some people are caustic, but you have never come across that way. Don't let it get to you. Just make less work for you. I'll always be a fan. You're such a talented poet. I'm always taken in by your finesse in writing. Big big hugs

The weird thing is this: one guy who has his page blocked to me came to MY page for the first time ever and commented to me. Does he have the ability to do that even though he has me blocked then? I think I can't soupmail him either. A woman doing it to me I know is deliberate. She has NA'd me 20 times in a row in her contests.
Date: 8/1/2024 4:17:00 PM
Its true! ive been blocked too by some, and i block back cus i can be a bit sensitive . Hah. And some block me but write for my contests and i think that must be an accidental block. As i accidentally block too sometimes. But its not nice that i cant xomment after judging. so i check blocked poets to make sure i don’t have any blocked hah Awwn dont be sad about people blocking you sweet Andrea. Maybe they do that accidentally as theres no reason to block you. You are very kind and respectful

Yes I can see accidental blocks I made but we can't see who has blocked US. One member told me to not sign in. Just go to the poet's page and if you can read their page and see current comments to them, it means they have you blocked. The problem then is you have to get a friend of theirs to ask them if the block is accident or deliberate.

There is a way, Andrea, go to member home, go to blocked poets, you'll see your list of blocked poets. I had Sara Baker blocked, accidentally I wondered why she stopped commenting on my page, usually the first. I was devastated when I checked the block page, always check!

I have a very short list of blocked poets that used vulgar language to me and a few crazies that creeped me out. Why is there no way to see a list of who has US blocked?
Date: 8/1/2024 2:44:00 PM
Some time ago I posted about that annoying ‘eye’ symbol, which particularly on a touchscreen, is so close to the typing area that it’s easy to block someone and not know you’ve done it. I’ve never deliberately blocked anyone but I still check occasionally just to be sure.

I check on occasion too in case I accidentally blocked someone, which I have a few times
Date: 8/1/2024 1:09:00 PM
If they have blocked you personally you will see that message. If you log out, then go back to the poem and it still says commenting turned off then I don't believe anyone can comment, though I suppose there may be private conversations that occur between friends where they could temporarily suspend that to allow a comment or two. If you go back to the poem and others are commenting on it then oof! You've been blocked. I have some who have blocked me that I don't even know lol
