Appreciation for Contest Sponsors - Andrea Dietrich's Blog

Andrea Dietrich grew up in Iowa and now resides in Utah with a spouse and two cats. She has two grown children and six grandchildren. Having graduated BYU with a Spanish major/ESL minor, she has spent most of her adult life teaching. It wasn't until 2000 that she began writing in earnest and discovering her "niche" as a writer of lyrical poetry. The internet opened up a new world for her, and she has spent two decades now participating in poetry clubs, acting as a judge of poetry contests for various magazines, for the website Shadow Poetry, and for Poetry Soup.

Ms. Dietrich has won numerous awards, as well as the title Poet of the Year 2008, from the Yahoo group, Poetry For Thought. In addition, she has won prizes from the magazines Lucidity, Bell's Letters, Art with Words, Poets at Work and SP Quill, the magazine for which she wrote grammar and poetry articles as well as movie reviews and for which she acted as poetry editor for the head editor Marie Summers for six years. Many of her poems appeared in Shadows Ink, a yearly published series of chapbooks of award winning poetry as well as in numerous other anthologies. Her short stories appeared in many issues of SP Quill and much of her poetry was published in eight chapbooks (no longer sold online).

Since coming to Poetry Soup, Ms. Dietrich has been both contest sponsor and winner of numerous contests. In 2010, her poem "Cinder Girl" was first place winner of Soup's International contest (these contests are no longer held).  A song was created from her lyrics "Honeymoon Serenade" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WDWxc4cpHDc) and two movies have been made featuring the poetry of Andrea Dietrich: "A Tale of Fire and Ice" (a 4 min. Z-Film Fest Project, 2014) and the full length movie "Six Days of Sistine" in which 20 poems of Ms. Dietrichs serve as the thoughts of two characters played by Jamie Campbell Bower and Elarica Johnson (directed by Richard J. Perry, 2019) https://www.imdb.com/title/tt7710360/

Appreciation for Contest Sponsors

Blog Posted:4/4/2019 7:30:00 PM

Just thought I would come here tonight to give a SHOUT OUT of appreciation for the many sponsors of contests here at our poets' haven known as PoetrySoup.

The year I first came here to Soup, I remember having such different ideas from how I think today. I was a judge of many contests at that time, and I gave strict rules of grammar, spelling, and rules of form, etc. I remember getting backlash for this in some blogs, being called heartless even. I remember disgruntled losers being upset with me, and honestly, I was giving a lot of wins, so they must have messed up really bad to get an N/A from me! In time, I lightened up . Some of you know I am a teacher. I teach English to adult International students who mainly want to get into universities in America. I am a bit of a softie as teachers go. I try really hard to see that my students learn English. If they are not getting great test scores, I know they are at least learning something through osmosis! This same attitude I take with my Soup contests now. Why not let most people have a win if they are at least doing a decent job with the form I asked for? It hurts nobody to let them appear on the winner page with the very best of the lot at the top three positions.

Today I rarely create contests. I became busier in my life. I can barely keep up with comments here, let alone sponsor contests, but I know I need to sponsor some more again. Thanks so much to the judges who inspire me (you know who you are as I have probably told you). And thanks to every sponsor who judges fairly and without bias. Thanks to judges who give multiple first places  Without you, some Soupers' poems would never get an ounce of exposure, and let's be frank, I think many poets enjoy knowing they will likely get a win if they enter this kind of contest!  These kinds of contests are great with short forms like limericks or tanka because the winner lists do not take a long time to see and everybody gets to be read!  Even more thanks to judges who do regular contests but who put great thought and consideration into their placement decisions, which makes a GOOD win feel all the more deserved! And thanks to judges of all contests who go around and let each of their contestants know their appreciation for those poets having supported their contest. Thanks to judges of Premiere contests (though I prefer ones who fill all ten places of their contests). Who doesn't want to have that cute little trophy next to one's winning poem? Even if the odds are 1/35 or maybe one out of a hundred (I have actually seen that!) it is a great honor to have that trophy next to your poem. Finally, thanks to judges who actually give money or prizes: Carolyn, LuLoo, and others. That makes winning so special.  Keep inspiring us, PoetrySoup sponsors. I hope to sponsor another contest myself in a month or two!

Oh, and thanks, TEAM POERYSOUP for all the many features that make things so easy for us to enjoy each other's work. If not for sites like this one, I truly would have very few people reading my work, and that is what it's all about for me and I bet for you too -  getting our poems out there to the world. Contest sponsors help so much in that objective! Thanks to all!

Andrea I like hosting contests because I know that contests help create new ideas in my own mind. I also think it helps people get out of a possible rut, me included. I admire all those who enter and the hosts also.

thanks so much for your comment. You are a great new asset here at the Soup, Caren, both as a poet and as a sponsor! (well, relatively new compared to how long I have known some of the others here at my blog!)

Indeed, I am one among those who are thankful to contests' sponsors. Thanks likewise, Ma'am Andrea (I always say Ma'am to teachers) for voicing out your gratitude in our behalf. God bless you; God bless PS. I am praying for the good progress of this site as I personally acknowledge this as a blessing to poets like me.

On the subject of few winners, I do not leave out anybody who *deserves* a win in my contest. If their name appears on the winners' list, it is because their poem appeals to me, plus they have obeyed the rules of the contest and not made basic spelling or punctuation errors. On the latter point, there is latitude if it has been set up as a design poem in the way of my latest poem, "Looking for Button". // Personally speaking, I don't care for a "let everyone win" approach, as it takes out worthiness.

Yes, indeed, Andrea, I am with you in being thankful for and praising the wonderful sponsors (including you) who post contests and judge them for us. I have never done it, but I am sure it's a difficult job. If it weren't for the contest prompts, I probably wouldn't write as much. You are very kind to post your appreciation to help us remember the dedicated poet/sponsors who keep us happy with these inspiring contests! Great blog! :)

Thanks so much, Sandra . I can see very well how the contest prompts have impacted your poetic writing!
Date: 4/5/2019 4:34:00 PM
(2) ... as they were all poems that took exceptional amounts of time, patience, work, and deep, important emotions, to create, (some about very traumatic events). I appreciate and respect EVERYONE here at PS, and their choices and decisions when it comes to the application of contests, as the rules have been thoughtfully provided by the admins to allow folks to be inclusive and creative with their cointests. Many thanks and blessings, My Brother & Sister Poets - we are a family, after all. <3

I appreciate your blog, Andrea, and for the support of my own ... if anyone took my statement as a negative view on contests or sponsors or even premiere contests, or a slight on Poetry Soup or its admins IN ANY WAY, then I fear they did not read my statement in entirety - it was only a personal decision about the feelings I have at PRESENT toward the process of cutting a group of forty wonderful poems down to 10. I've had other premieres that were not nearly as painful, (with up to fourteen entries that didn't even read the rules, lol), but this particular contest was replete with quality work, and it just felt wrong to me to NOT give those other poems and poets their due ... I have often gotten inspiration from contest prompts when I was stuck and didn't know what to write about and greatly appreciate those who put in their time to sponsor contests. Sometimes really good poems grow out of these prompts - and sometimes I am just having some silly fun and finger practice.

Andrea, thank you for your nice comments honoring those who sponsor contests! I find it both fun and challenging. I know judging can be brutal when there are so many excellent poems and only ten can be placed. I like the standard ones more due to this but also enjoy having a premiere contest once on awhile. Thanks again for your support!!

Andrea,as a long-time contest sponsor it has been an honour to have read the poetry of the hundreds of talented poets at PS (whose poems ( imho) rank alongside those of published poets of the past and present in my daily readings etc Thank you and invite you (all)now to continue and contribute to my 'NEW' contest approach mentioned in the blog I published today.(April 5) Cheers one and all.

I agree with you, Brian. I believe there are many poems here at Soup with as high calibre as some of the classics. Sadly, poetry is not seen as an important aspect of culture any more and many talented souls here will go unnoticed. Truly, I have read things here even more amazing than what was in the poetry section of my high school literature book!
