A note about Rico

Many of you had inquired about Rico after he had passed. I was able to visit with his wonderful daughter Rhiannon and her husband Michael while I was working in CA recently. She baked the yummiest English scones I have ever had and prepared pots of tea for us. It meant so much to me that we could share some time together and I could look in her eyes and give her big hugs. I had not seen her since before Covid in 2019. That was the last time I had seen her father, my dear friend Rico. She spent time with him over Thanksgiving and then he went downhill quite fast. He had lung cancer. Luckily she was able to be with him during his last week and take care of him in Hawaii. I told her about the outporing of love and condolences on Poetry Soup and it brought a smile to her face. Apparently he sent her an email everyday in the late afternoon mulling over the events of the day. I told her he posted a limrick most days on the Soup. I have screen grabbed many of your lovely comments to email her. I have also included your lovely tribute Anaya and the comments received from it . Ilene, I just found yours as well and will include it. I hope I have included everyone. If not please accept my thanks. Please know your kind words and thoughts will be received by his family shortly In gratitude to you all. I love being a part of Poetry Soup !

Hi Susan, I haven't been on the Soup lately and it breaks my heart to hear of Rico’s passing.As I write I am literally in tears. I will miss him very much. His Limericks will go down in “ Poetry Soup” history. They made me laugh and so much more. I send my condolences to his family and friends.

To all that have commented I say THANK YOU for your PRESENCE and kind thoughts. When Rhiannon receive the emails she wrote back right away and was filled with GRATITUDE to all of you. She realized her father was surrounded with such a wonderful community ! Blessings to all, Susan :)

Hugs for u for this. I have been off a lot since i last saw & commented about missing Rico. Had not yer heard he was ill & only just now thru you, hear of his passing. I’d also been too dumb to know he was a senior. To me, his poetry & comments always so sprite & clever that i had imagined him to be in his 20’s! So this is a big shock. Made me cry. For me. pSp is family these days. God rest his soul & bless his family all. Hugs of thanks to you. sally

Hi Susan….l was always curious as to who Rico was as he seemed so knowledgeable, interesting and well travelled and a bit rude n naughty!!. I had no idea how old he was either. We don't ask these questions of other poets as we don't want to be intrusive. When he passed I ask Anaya if she had any info about Rico and she did say you would be the best person to ask. So thankyou for sharing about Rico. I am sorry you lost a good friend Susan. Debx

It’s strange that, although I never met Rico in person and have no idea what he even looked like, I truly feel like I have lost a friend. Susan, how happy I am that you have reached out to us about Rico's passing. Thank you. The reunion with Rico's daughter must have been moving and bittersweet. The scones and tea sound fabulous! I can put to rest that it was not Covid, but still a most heart-rending circumstance. My condolences to Rhiannon and Michael. Thank you for adding my tribute, we miss him. :)
