Sandia

SANDIA Sandia …Sandia I love you. Sandia…Sandia your beautiful deep shadows and illuminated peaks stir within me wonder and desire. To be part of your world, your story, your history would be my gift. Whisper to me … Sweet watermelon hills. I long to be closer to you, to touch you, to smell the air on your highest peak, to lay my tired body in your lush green valleys. I know you speak to me and whisper in my ears. I know you call to me and I hear your words… “Come to me. Let me embrace you. You will become me and travel through my past, my present and on into my future. Let me stroke your forehead and gently touch your tired eyelids closing them so you may rest if even for a few moments.” “Rest in my hills, in my shelter of smooth warm stones. Surround yourself. Rest on me. Breathe in my air. Look upward and gaze upon the lovely pink and gray clouds that hover around me. Let me kiss you with my breeze…the call of the air… and the promise of dreams to come.”

Dearest Bill, apologies for the tardy reply to your lovey message !! It has been extremely busy here . How wonderful that you could visit my website and see my paintings . A gift for me . It sounds like you had a wonderful experience in New Mexico . The land speaks as does our heart when we are quite and listen Often this happens in meditation or while immersing ourselves in nature . Thank you for the pleasure of your friendship and your deep soulful heart . So happy to know you and Sara ! Thank you for the Fav. Sending blessings, Susan :)

I visited your website today and found your painting to be warm and inspiring. I went back to your first posted poem here on Poetry Soup, as I try to do once I see a poet's words resonate with me. My daughter and her husband lived in Albuquerque for a few years and when visiting them we visited the Sandias. Beautiful country and breathetaking views from the mountains. Your painting was a wonderful greeting and your poem luminating. To feel the oneness of nature, in any form is spiritual.tbc

There’s valid reason for New Mexico to be the Land of Enchantment. I wanted to retire there, somewhere is sight of the Sandias. I didn’t, but they’re in my heart. I love your poem Susan! I can see the glorious landscape through your words. Thank you for that.

I lived in New Mexico briefly as a child and remember driving from Albuquerque to the Sandra mountains. It seemed like we would never get there, so large and so far away. And then we were, and it was a magical day with fresh snow. Good memories recalled by this poem.

Susan of all the writers here on the Soup. Your Poems of a place or location. No one here captures the personification better than you. You bring these locations alive, with emotions it is almost as though you become the Mountain or the place. Your words are exciting because you create a seductive like emotion in the reader, you have to remind yourself that it is a place you're relating too. You have mastered this ability to bring nature alive through your own emotions and feelings. Bravo...

Dearest Susan, your experience with Sandia reads like a spiritual connection was made that day that continues into the present. The nurturing, almost mother and child resonance is deeply felt in your words. I have had the good fortune to visit Sandia once in my life, and have never lost the desire to return. I have trekked up several summits and have experienced that spiritual embrace you depict. I love everything about the mountains: the air, the trees, the streams, the wildlife, the primeval continuity with the long ago... It is life altering, but eventually you return to sea level (or I do, anyway), clinging to that dreamy memory of mountaintop magic. Thank you for rekindling those memories. This write was a majestic and worthy way to begin your PS career, and it is also a delight to have it included in the PS Anthology, book 2.

Dearest John, So much gratitude for your visit and kind words We have shared similar experiences in the majestic and magical call of the air, trees, streams and oneness that is felt while nearing the peaks of the mountains. There is no way to describe how it changes one. Mother Nature has always called to my soul...my inner being . I do hear her whisper to me and it is truly a gift . The language of the ancients . Thank you for your visit and for participating along with me. I send you loving thoughts and all good wishes for a glorious day, week, month and year. Thank you for viewing my recent paintings. They are an ongoing series honoring our dear Mother Earth. Blessings, Susan :)

Great poem, just as I remember it. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been up to the top of the Sandia mountains. Lived in or near Albuquerque for a number of years. “Watermelon hills” is such an apt description. Welcome. John

Beautiful poem! Is this about Sandra Peak in New Mexico? I really liked it there. Sandia peak really did look like a water melon. It is gorgeous there. Sounds like you get to live there.

Thank you Jennifer ! I was just visiting for a few days. I am a painter and the color just mesmerized me and the way the light changed during the hours. No I don't live there. I was hiking near the Sandia Mountains which is my reference for the poem. All the best, Susan :)
