Understanding to Reminisce

The gift was given, yet not understood
To be vibrant and far from wasting away
I paid no attention to the years of change
To awaken one day with life's ebbing decay

I found in a mirror my reflection of deterioration
Along with a thought, how fast life had been
The arrival of gray hair and rippled wrinkles
And the long brown spots from skin paper thin

Could that life had kept me as my youth
And yet this arrogance I must dismiss
As I grow old in a slow aching regression
It gives me time to understand and reminisce

Dear Frederic, you’ve captured the ache, both in heart and in spirit, of the slow decline of aging with such expressive wistful elegance, though your final two lines do help to soften the edges of aging’s reality. Youth does not know what it does not know and youth does not last long, especially when viewed in the rear view mirror. Beautifully poignant and soulful poetry, my inspiring friend. Lovely musical accompaniment too! Best wishes for a win and warmest wishes for you, dear poet.. ~Susan
