The Pretense of Pointless Blogs

Open forum to write what you will about pointless blogs. Please bear in mind that NO rude or insincere comments will remain. I'm curious about what others think about posting a blog that seems meaningless, and/or prohibits comments. Yes, I know that is permitted by PS, but really, what's the point of that? If there's something worth writing, it should be worthy of having others express their opinions.

Methinks that as long as a blog exists, there's a point that the blogger wants us to see. Most of the time we might see some blogs having comments cut offs, but if we look deeper, there's a silent message by the blogger, intentional or not intentional.

i don't understand why a blogger would not want feedback... isn't a message for all a sign that the writer would enjoy some sense of reciprocity?... hmm, lin.. hugggs

That's my way of thinking, nette. I enjoy reading the opinions of other poets as well as their comments on my poems. Communication is a good way to interact and get to know each other. Thanks a lot for offering your point of view.

Lin, to me the purpose of a blog is back and forth communication, when comments are turned off that defeats the purpose and is just pointless, yes information is given but no questions can be asked, as for receiving nasty replies well is that not why we were given the delete ability on blogs and there is always block, so I just don't see the point of a blog with no commenting, just my opinion, it is not my intent to insult anyone, its just that it makes no sense.

Thanks for your thoughts, Constace. I don't think any comment made on this blog has given anyone reason to feel they've been insulted. I asked for opinions and I received many that were varied. Several issues were discussed in a mature manner and by respected members of the PS community.

"Pointless" blogs - there won't be general agreement, because there is such a wide range (naturally) in the philosophies of all the people here. I'm all for discussion, and the ability to delete posts really does not seem right to me - I think much more is lost than is gained there. Just my opinion, though, and we're not all going to agree even on what blogs are 'pointless' or not.

Wordpress blogs do not automatically upload comments. Comments can be selected to be included on the blog or deleted before anyone but the blog's author reads them. Poetrysoup is not a blog site, but it does allow us to have a blog, and therefore it does not have all the bells and whistles of sites which were created for blogging. I couldn't care less if someone chooses to shut off comments, as long as the blog is not directed at specific Soupers and is just a "thinking about this..." type of blog. As long as a blog is not a direct attack on a member, then members can choose to just ignore them (it's actually quite easy ... unless you care about the opinion.)

Thanks for joining in with your viewpoints, Cyndi. I was interested in opinions other than whether or not blogs are closed to comments. I don't care that PS makes that an option, or that people do it, but I thought I'd take a moment to see what others thought about blogs that are more like a diary on very personal levels.

I'm not privy to all the hurts and life assaults every member of Soup has experienced. Fences are put up for many reasons... whenever possible, try to see the other side unless the other side has taken chunks out of you, gnawed you raw...

There are odd things happening on soup Becca yesterday I had an e mail from a friend and underneath it was a link to my 'member area' and it showed a person was blocked - I don't have anyone blocked at all... the same thing happened some months ago it showed I had someone blocked and the minute i unblocked her she got blocked straight away again when i wasn't anywhere near her poetry page. I have changed my password! hugs jan xx

Interesting, much logic here--but I might add that logic evaporates when one posts a blog with no comments allowed that ends in a interrogatory.

I would say generally speaking there is a little bit of arrogance when you expect someone to read what you have written and not expect comments. In a way I feel it is a selfish act. Now on the other hand if this writer has been maligned by a comment in the past, I can understand and accept their choice of not having comments. So like I stated it depends on the reason why and most time were not privy to know why they are acting in that manner. Thanks for posting Lin...

My personal opinion is not to hurt anyone with my opinion and anyone can disagree with it and that's ok. First I want to state that if someone doesn't want a response that's ok. Or if someone wants to blog whatever that is ok to, What someone might consider pointless that individual might not. Now when someone doesn't want an opinion, I ask myself why? What is the motive behind it, For example are they afraid of a comment that they might not be able to tolerate. Have they been hurt before by someone else's comment or are they making an egotistical statement that they selfishly don't care what you think. To me the reason why is more important than the act. We have a choice of not reading it.

I agree with all of your insightful remarks, Michael. You've covered a lot of possible reasons for pros and cons on the issue(s) and I appreciate your first sentence the most...not to hurt anyone with your opinion. I'm cheered that you're posting here again and thank you for adding your thoughts.

I love blogs with comments cut off. Who made the rule that they must be open for discussion. A true open community attracts and supports all type of freedoms, including the closed blog. Judge not... Blah blah. I encourage everyone to blog or comment as they see fit.

For whatever reason, Lewis' remark was removed. It was, "Soooooo you agree with me," to which I replied, I agree that you have the right to have an opinion and state it.

No one said there is a rule that blogs must be open for discussion. This one is not focused on judging anyone but merely to voice opinions, as you just did. The first two words clearly read, "Open forum." Even if "blah blah" is your opinion, you were able to take part.

Exactly, Jan. I may be wrong but I don't think blogs are meant to be used as diaries. And why not add to an existing one on an issue instead of opening a new one by the same person?

actually there are only a few who have posted blogs and then closed off discussions and one of them hasn't been on here for a few months, but I hear you it really doesn't make any sense
