Karen's 'What Makes Me Smile' Contest ~ May 18, 2025

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

In a busy world I don't take for granted simple pleasures Blooms, newly risen in Spring from bulbs planted last year Rummaging through my collection of keepsake treasures. My children saying those three special words I want to hear. I smile when I have the involuntary reaction to give one back to a stranger who has just offered a nod and a smile at me I've found myself grinning, and doing so with great satisfaction when butterflies emerged, knowing that I'd set them free That first sweet bite of a warm cinnamon bun with icing The feeling when first waking and taking a morning stretch Purchasing what I want, then finding it has a sale pricing When I'm happy with a painting I've created from a sketch When gifted with a bouquet of flowers for no reason at all Seeing pewter clouds in the sky when there's need for rain Watching my granddaughter take motherly care of her doll Feeling the gentle touch of a friend, trying to ease my pain Having an unimpeded view of stars brightly glowing at night When I've found that daydreams have set my thoughts adrift Watching dawn's roseate skies and lavender hues at twilight And being offered forgiveness for a sin: the most revered gift

Lin, this about says it all. You didn't mention anything capitalistic and the poem reflects what is really important in life. Yes, we're glad there are people at work doing things that might help society's members enjoy the very things you like to experience. If most people understood what you are saying, there would be an epidemic of peace and happiness throughout the land. This is a real winner in my book. Smiles!!

Capitalism, politics, the weather... none of those make me smile. Those things that mean the most to me... personally are what I find gratifying. Ninth place on this one... meh. Thanks for enjoying it.

Dear Lin, what a beautiful reminder of all the wonderful images that we too often forget, to busy with life that we actually miss out on all those moments you have described, it's a reminder not to take life or others for granted, to slow down and appreciate the simple things in life, I know that's where I get most pleasure from. Congratulations on your win. Danny

The simple things that some may feel are mundane should never be taken for granted. I know how much you enjoy those things. They can count for more happiness than we can imagine. Thank you for your thoughtful words, Danny.
