Notes About The Poem

Constance's Nine Beautiful Lines Contest ~ April 1, 2025

Listen to poem:

Beautiful is This Sunset

There is something magical about the way a sunset can
make us feel at peace, grateful, and alive all at once."
                                          ~ Morgan Harper Nichols.

Alone, I sat quietly upon the bay's southern shore
as sunset faded into twilight with a sense of languor
Too soon, of the sun's warmth there would be no trace
But until that moment, I would savour its embrace

Sanguine skies, sea of blue, sunlight reflected in gold
It was like a painting on canvas, one worthy to be sold
From towering height of mountains to the rippling sea
Nature was proudly exposing her glorious beauty to me

Is it possible tomorrow morning's sunrise could be lovelier?

Lin, you end with a great question. I'm thinking you know each one of these gets appreciated for its unique presentation, and yet we take each in for the newness and reinforcement we feel. We don't really get to see how fast the world rotates, but seeing the movement on the horizon is very revealing and actually strange to fathom.

Duke, I've probably witnessed the beauty of more sunrises than its counterpart. It's always fascinated me to realize that when the sun fades into the horizon... how quickly it happens, especially when it seems to drown in the sea. Thanks, for your keen insight.

You certainly captured a stunning sunset Lin! Amazingly one still sticks in my mind from when I was a kid watching a football match, it was a good game, but the sunset was perfect, I looked at the crowd but none of them seemed to notice, then it was gone, thanks for reviving that moment, A fave from me, cheers David

I found this painting after I'd written the lines... too perfect not to use it. I'm glad you have that one special sunset as a memory. One in particular stands out in my mind, in Key West, Florida. Thanks, David.

Dear Lin, what a serene acceptance of nature’s fleeting beauty. I loved how the sunset you describe feels alive, its warmth and colors painting a canvas of peace and reflection. I think the gentle longing for tomorrow’s sunrise adds a tender touch of hope. Your words show me how to savor each moment’s magic. I think is is a very tranquil masterpiece. Spring Blessings, My Dear Friend, Daniel

Hi, Daniel and you're right about the fleeting moments at the time of sunset, more so than a sunrise. The sun seems to fade much more quickly than in the morning when Dawn wakes him. We should savor each of them that we can. Thanks very much, kind friend.
