Dangers plague the rebellious world in which we live Too much greed and vengeance. Too few willing to forgive It's a never-ending war cry of accuse, fight, and repeat We’re all walking along a knife's edge with bloodied feet It's nation vs. nation, brother against brother; combative. Everyone is power hungry to become king of the hill Stepping upon each other as if we're bodies in a landfill We're teetering for balance before tumbling from a cliff Why doesn't anyone ask the right question— "What If?" What if arbitrary wars rage on in the minds of men until— What if no one felt the urgent need to survive and succeed and what if peace were to prevail when it's been decreed? Would it be possible that we've achieved a Gandhian escape, or would wily wolves be disguised in a sheepskin serape? Some refuse to surrender even when near death they bleed Mankind is blind not to realize the havoc it's been wreaking Instead of aggression, it's serenity we should be seeking But I fear this selfish world will not ever be of one accord until the day when a human hand no longer raises a sword Shame on those immoral leaders for the lies they're speaking Death seeks a steep ransom, always demanding we pay more So, when it raps loudly, don't be in a hurry to open your door Don't risk your life falling from the height of a cliff's ledge Some live dangerously but that's a bet no one should hedge Walking on a knife's edge leaves bloody footprints on the floor

Well said, Lin; whether achievable or not, the wise, the loving will always try for a better world. In our own humble way, why many of us write poetry.

Dear Lin, your poem is a heart-wrenching social commentary so poignantly and potently shaped into a poetic gem of humanity's inhumanity. I concur with the rich depths of this purposeful and thought-provoking piece. "What If?" - great question! You wield your poet's pen like a shining sword to expose the black heart of corruption and apathy so justice and empathy can bleed through to cleanse the wounds. Your last line is a powerful finale! Warmest wishes, my poet friend.. ~Susan

Hi, Susan and thanks ever so much for agreeing with the deplorable state of our world today. I'm always grateful for your support and the encouragement you offer in your perceptiveness of my poetry. Enjoy your weekend, kind friend.

so that's how I get all the holes in my socks.....I have heard such feeling referred to as "viewing with alarm for the good of the whole". Interesting write Lin. A mentor of mine once told me I should "do three good things for others each day and not get found out"...I'd tell ya what I did today but then they wouldn't count...

Either that or you've been walking on broken mirror glass! lol I know of at least one good thing you did yesterday, but I'm sure there were many more. Thank you very much for your remarks, John.

An aspirational message Lin, but (What if) is the epitaph of humanity as you already know, judging by your reply to Duke below about cannibalism, I’m pretty sure it still goes on but on a very small scale, (hopefully I’m wrong) anyway the only thing oxymoronically stopping us from annihilating each other are the things designed to annihilate each other, (The Nukes) Mutually Assured Destruction, MAD, a well written piece as always, cheers David

That may have been a pretty far-reaching thought that I made to Duke, but what if? Too many tragic events taking place in the world these days are definitely MAD. Thanks for the backup thoughts, David. I'm always pleased to read your comments.

Lin, what you bring up gives us all a lot to think about. There's a lot here. I'm pondering all the activities that have a great deal of risk, and how pursuing them will often not end well for the people involved or for other species as well. Hard to imagine how this ends well when we have leaders with the emotional intelligence of two-year olds in charge. Sadly, we've enabled all of this. There are some of us who have much less desire to upset the applecart (an Eden allegory). Seems like we who feel this way get brushed aside. I think we could have a lot of progress through cooperative endeavors that we pursue out of our love for exploration and accomplishment...not to try to accumulate an unlimited treasure trove. Smiles, of course!!

Society walks on them when we're not throwing them at each other. The fight for the fittest never ends well unless you're a predator in a jungle and must hunt to survive. Humans hunt and kill as a game. Next will be cannibalism. I'm not sure how that thought came to mind, but it's one I'll try not to imagine again. Things are bad enough as they are. Thanks for smiling after reading this one, Duke.
