    Robert's Book of Souls Contest ** April 8, 2025

In the beginning as it was on Earth, there's a gentle mood played in Iron Maiden's music... before the shock of reality hits us in the face and it's time to admit: Everyone has demons to face, dark places in both mind and soul that we would love to erase. Bury them with the kings of old whose stories and legends have been told. Haunting tales of past empires and the fires they walked through in life and death as their kingdoms were raised in glory and then fell from a time of being a euphoric paradise before being tragically torn asunder and thrown into the flaming bowels of hell. Presented as a Book, though not Biblical in nature, a history lesson done in lyrical form, the concept deeply ensconced in the importance of highlighting the soul's memories of what was, is and will be. There's relevance to the journey in the Iron Maiden's song. Rights and wrongs of mankind since its inception centuries ago. Life, death and the changing hands of power, the tower built like Babel that unleashed God's ire on man's desire to have worth. On Earth, wars have always existed because of the twisted need for greed. The Book of Souls warns to take heed that cities of stone will topple... a prophecy currently coming true for none are willing to sacrifice anything, always wanting more for himself. Kings flaunting riches, a bane to their souls Commoners crying out in envious moans for what they will never be able to hold. History repeating itself from days of old. Based on false tongues of wanna-be gods. The book of lies is being read and accepted by far too many blind eyes. Is it the beginning of what the Book of Souls sees as the repetitious pattern of doom? Is it the time foreseen when civilization closes its eyes to the reality of truth and forsooth... annihilates itself and dies?

Lin, it is interesting how much has been written in texts and in biblical scriptures about conflict. While I accept conflict as inevitable, how we deal with it might have a better outcome if we learned and really appreciated the lessons from the past. It is as you say the reality of truth. Amazing how easily led into the depths of despair we are all for the benefit of a few power hungry greedy individuals who will never achieve happiness. They have no clue.

We are humans, flawed in many ways. Some even to the point of lemmings following the wrong leader, or rats following the flute of the Pied Piper. What tune must we play to get people to follow the right leader? Tuba? Drums? lol They're blind so maybe tone deaf to boot!

Dear linnersz, this is such a profound and powerful poem so well woven, inspired by the book of souls by iron maiden: i love iron maiden but iv never listen to this song, your take on it makes me pause and think deep as theres so many layers to it which can be thought provoking, so many truths in such a poetic manner/ i really felt the lines “ Kings flaunting riches, a bane to their souls Commoners crying out in envious moans for what they will never be able to hold.” Couldnt have said it any better! Your words emanate wisdom! Best wishes for the contest! Sending you light always

Hi, Ink and thank you for your encouraging review. I'd never heard the song either, and I had to read the lyrics before I could grasp their meaning. At least, I hope I did. I appreciate you letting me know the lines that stood out to you. ;-)

Thank you, Jan. I'm not sure if I did, but it was interesting to read the lyrics and then write my thoughts as to where they led.

Dear Lin, Well in my humble opinion, you beautifully navigate the darkness we all face and those haunting memories of history. I love the Iron Maiden's themes with the struggles of humanity. Your well-inked words show through our journey how we rise, fall, and often repeat. Well worth reading! Spring Blessings, My Dear Friend, Daniel

You ARE a dear Daniel. I don't think I could write something ambiguous for you. Many thanks for 'getting it' and finding it worth the read. ;-)

Not a fan of their music but your verse captures the darkness well. Tom

Nor I, Tom but thanks for reading me despite...

Wow, that was a drastic ending but I get it. Too often we are blind (or unaware) of things that mean to cause us harm and that can only lead to an unhappy ending. Very dark Lin and very well written

Hi Chris. It's for an Iron Maiden song contest... not typically my type of music but I found the lyrics quite profound, so I took a walk in the shadows and came up with these lines. I don't like meandering there for more than the time needed. lol Thanks... the real ending yet to be determined.
