Saving the Poetry Site

The site is riddled with AI and it's a riddle if the winners of contests are now AI or human. It's tempting to shut up shop and forget about poetry. What can we do to try and save the site?

Gleaned from popular opinion

  • AI is ruining poetry from the perspective of sharing humanity.
  • It is stopping human written poems from placing in contests (because AI written poetry isn't bad poetry but it is a scam)
  • It's damaging engagement because the AI scammers do love a compliment on their 'skill' (and being taken for a fool kind of puts people off bothering again once the truth comes out).

Before we think of what we can do to counter it, here's some truths we need to bear in mind.

Current situation

  • AI detection tools are flawed - you'll get false negatives and false positives. However, you wouldn't expect someone's back catalogue (or the equivalent of a back catalogue, but posted in four minutes flat, to all flag as AI)
  • AI poetry is often formulaic, it's too mechanically 'clever'. Plus for contests you'll see that AI entries often follow a similar blueprint but with different word/concept choices but the patterns are discernible. They leap off the page as obvious AI once you become familiar with it.
  • This might not be always true, but an AI poet seems to LOVE the double bluff and nearly every reply will mention the length of time they took to write and reference fondly "their" poem with stated ownership - what gives fraud face! It's not your work if it was generated or rewritten by a bot! (Sorry not sorry).

So, what can we actually do?

Well, I've noticed how many real poets are becoming disinclined to post and then when they return to the site they find there's nothing worth reading.

We'll need to reverse this direction of travel.

Many of the poets using AI flood the new poems list with their "talent". I mean every one is a masterpiece worthy of sharing, how could they not?! So, it might be helpful if you click the "view ONE new poem per poet" button then it refines the list and with this view it enables you to more easily scan for your favourite poets that are currently being lost amid the poem dumping of AI users.

What's a real poet to do?

So, we get to the point I wanted to make. If we stop posting our genuine poetry (which doesn't have to be perfect) then all the real writers and readers of poetry will drift away, put off by just AI offerings. There needs to be a reason to stay and that reason is likely to be why you joined in the first place - authentic poetry sharing.

I personally have just a small circle of favourites, so I'm not going to advocate that we must act out of our comfort zone and start commenting wildly to raise engagement. Each of us will have our own set of poets we enjoy reading, let's just proceed with sharing our poetry and commenting genuinely when we've enjoyed a poem or found it thought provoking. Replying to comments to acknowledge seems common decency, however, expectations for reciprocal commenting shouldn't be the norm or a highly pressured feature of the site. Let people enjoy or not, comment or not. What goes around usually comes around and it'll work out, but posting real poetry on whatever is a regular basis for you is a necessity.

Contests

Unfortunately, there aren't any answers with regard to the contests having high placing AI poems. Several sponsors have tried to have contests that are difficult for AI to generate entries for but that is getting more and more difficult and isn't foolproof. Neither is using AI checkers. So, whilst a keen eye will help, all I can think is perhaps we just enter contests for the fun of it, use titles that identify when something is a contest write and enjoy the engagement and camaraderie that comes with it. Let beating AI to the top spots be an added bonus rather than a point of contention. I think there's a lesson here about enjoying the process - the writing and sharing.

The sponsors are fallible and the scammers are believable. But all need not be lost if we adjust what is important to us about the site. Which for me is reading poetry that means something because it was written by another genuine human and being read by another human who also gets that.

NB: Unfortunately, AI poetry is not the only thing deterring an honest poet. I'm perfectly happy with discussion but if there's any hate or it gets uncomfortable I'll just delete the blog. My motivation is just to try and reinvigorate the site.

Unfortunately, it appears that AI is something we'll have to live with. It's everywhere, not just on this site. Honor will seek out its devils! Write on with our own honor - shame on those that don't and let them wallow in their insignificance while we're proud that we don't need a machine - Celebrate those who are honest!

Thanks for stopping by Craig <3 I don't think addressing one AI user helps as another one rolls in and takes their place. Continuing writing and engaging with trusted poets suits me in the midst of it all.

Very interesting topic this. Just annoying to see that my poem (https://www.poetrysoup.com/poem/from_a_child_to_an_adult_1661918) written 30 years ago scored nearly 100% on the AI test recommended by PS (https://undetectable.ai/). Also that my 2. poem and theory behind it (pondered on over the last 25 years) also scores high on the same test. But I am quite nerdy, have always been, so no wonder. I dont care.

The false positives are a concern. Those flooding the site have pages and pages of poetry often very quickly, with a large proportion with high scores for AI. I'm not advocating checking others for AI though, just leaving them to it and maintaining our own poetry connections. As more and more computer generated poetry has flooded the site, many genuine poets give up sharing here and before long the site will be bots talking to other bots with a human middle man. It's such a shame seeing it happen and feeling unable to do anything about it.

The absence by TPS on this blog (as mentioned in a comment earlier on) is understandable: Last year when I had suggested a feature under the Poem Form on the submission page to include "AI-generated" (which they easily implemented), the pushback was so severe that I very nearly lost my account on PS. Now we have to take it on the chin and live with it - guessing at the content generator of most poems. Yes, I did also specify that these poems will be excluded from premiere contests. Yes, we have to rely on people's honesty - much like now :)

Thanks Su, it's all been covered in previous blogs and we are where we are. It's just to point out that where we are isn't defeated but still genuine human poets with other genuine poetry connections. It is important to nourish that, unfortunately fighting the AI battle might end up at the expense of people enjoying poetry on the site and that would be very difficult to build back up once gone.

Like you say DD: 'Which for me is reading poetry that means something because it was written by another genuine human and being read by another human who also gets that.'
Date: 6/12/2025 12:32:00 AM
Discouraging AI abusers to enter my contests, is my top priority. I would rather have faltering efforts at my new poetic form (that was specificly designed to resist AI imitation), than run classic contests where AI is even a remote possibility. Yes, not everyone took to Suzette Swan Arc, but it is my small contribution to keep PoetrySoup alive in the poetry world - even bad publicity is better than no publicity (as the recent negative responses I received at Reddit). No, my ego is not dented - I know we have a family of poets on this site - each with their own unique voice - and it will withstand the stupor that AI-generating poets seem to crave. Tough love (as with any addict) the only remedy. In the mean time, SSA counters predictability (too linear work), and fosters "show, don't tell" - something everyone might benefit by.

We'll all have our individual top priorities Su but as long as it mostly comes hand in hand with continuing to write, share and read others then hopefully we can sustain what we've enjoyed for such a long time. Btw it was your comment on me not sharing poems as frequently and there only being AI to read that prompted me to write the blog. You were right!

There's no doubt it's a sad state of affairs and thoroughly unpleasant to have people being dishonest about poetry, but hopefully there is enough established community here to sustain a poetry site. Thank you for your thoughts Seeker - as you know I value your presence.

I think that's a valid option Chetta. I'm pretty annoyed at times seeing AI poetry and AI comments and people taking bows for things they've most certainly not written but I don't want feeling like that to mean too many real poets hang up their hat
Date: 6/11/2025 7:07:00 PM
DD. a great blog with valid points. AI is ruining poetry period. I have noticed that new poets do seem to post only great poems and do love the limelight of attention. I agree that we can still enjoy our favorite poets on PS and read their poems. I am not sure about the contests and where I stand moving forward with that. We need better detection tools but I don't have much faith in them.

Thanks Tania, the contests do have a question mark over them - personally trying to weed out AI was exhausting and accidentally placing it embarrassing, so I'm taking a break from sponsoring. I just feel we're on the cusp of having no site if the real poets feel defeated by AI. Currently there are enough of us to sustain our poetry circles and we need to focus on that if this type of community is to continue. Getting wiser about spotting AI is important too but on a sinking ship (or nose dive plane - I'm getting them all in!) we really do have to re-evaluate what we focus on. Hopefully something good can come from chatting it through in the wider context of what we still have rather than the threat. Thanks :)
Date: 6/11/2025 5:14:00 PM
It is the most beautiful blog I've seen, yet nothing we don't already know about this discussion. I don't think it's necessary to " just concentrate on the smaller circles until something is figured out" on the contrary, by reaching out to knew poets and spot the AI ones right away is what's needed. With your intellect and experience, it's You ( sponsors and poets who have time) who should be spreading those tentacles. If a dilettante like me can, you most certainly can. Solutions unfound, archaic unchanged only condemns. TY DD for posting. Beautiful Blog!

Thanks Anaya, crusades are not for everyone I think is my point. I'd rather have the fight about AI usage as a sideline because it's not something we can change on this particular site and I don't really like the other options (and they have similar issues). What I do like is enjoying poetry amongst people I trust and respect. Those people are frequenting the site less and less often - so we're in a nose dive here, which in my book needs an urgent priority change.
Date: 6/11/2025 2:11:00 PM
Everybody knows that PS management runs a "love poem generator" and "random word generator" on this Site, right??? Is that not sponsoring AI production?? Check the Poetry Resources queue on the left of your screen.

Apologies Arlo, I was really tired when I replied and didn't mean to offend. It's just we've done the "how do we stop it" and "PS need to sort it" arguments already and found there is no answer (right now). I suppose eventually it'll be legislated that it needs to be declared - but who knows how far away those things are. What that discussion is though is demotivating and unsettling. People are leaving because they feel powerless or because unrest feels bad. However, the blog is about saying we can still be happily sharing our poetry in established small circles on the site and take what we need from the contests without slamming the sponsors. PS shouldn't have a poem generator, no AI checkers, no action for 100% AI, be publishing AI poetry books - but shouting about that makes me pretty sad and uninspired and actually I'd just like to write and share poems.

Regarding “.. , it might be helpful if you click the ‘view ONE new poem per poet’ button then it refines the list and with this view it enables you to more easily scan for your favourite poets that are currently being lost amid the poem dumping of AI users.” I’ve suggested / argued before that it should be the page where there are multiple daily poems by each poet that should be the link you have to click and the ‘one new poem per poet’ should be the pinned page you are automatically taken to when perusing the new poems. Cheers - Gary

It’s hard to know where this is all going to end Dilly, the site itself has no deterrents or firewalls in place to combat AI recidivists, so looks like we’re being left to vend for ourselves as usual, the very fact that Admin hasn’t added anything reassuring to this blog, is quite alarming in itself! Yeah I'm past thinking anyone is swooping in to do anything at all about it. So this is a last ditch attempt to persuade poets not to completely abandon sharing their poetry and just concentrate on the smaller circles until something is figured out. I know who I trust and I'd be loathe to get too excited about any wonderful new poets coming on the scene at this point unfortunately. There is still sections of the site to enjoy at the moment, just about!

I know I wouldn't do it, for one it feels a waste of time as poetry is about the process of writing and not the fanfare. It's a poor choice of hobby to fake as it's about heart and soul. It's a real shame it's happened but I don't want to assume too much about those that do it. There's probably a lot of reasons why. Unfortunately it puts off the real poets and the community disappears
Date: 6/11/2025 10:31:00 AM
It's such a sad state of affairs Dilly - whilst I appreciate the AI checkers aren't always accurate when you see a dramatic change in a poets 'style' and when 10 / 10 poems hit 100% on 3 different AI checkers it raises a red flag especially if 5 perfectly penned limericks are posted in a row .Limericks can be written with chat gp but wont show up on a checker as they require a certain amount if words but long rhymes do show.

This is it Jan, if all the actual poets leave it's just a site talking to itself with bots. We can sit and generate poems ourselves if that's what we wanted to read. Hopefully we can try keeping our own circles going at least and being more mindful of the poetic blueprint that is likely to be AI. Dramatic improvements and writing across 10 themes a day, every day is a tell. Poetry generally comes from an emotional place. I'm tempted to just leave them to it. Maybe they can sit and praise each other with AI generated comments and live happily ever after.

It's a shame folk feel the need to deceive and then win contests with a poem that 'isn't their work' perhaps an additional yes/no tick box could be added when we post a poem and 'honest' folk can admit it is AI generated as folk fail to actually read the terms and conditions. No 7 reads "AI Generated poems are not allowed on PoetrySoup" . to be honest I spend less and less time on the site and seldom enter contests and I know the AI problem is upsetting many poets. what a pity admin don't address the issues highlighted on a recent blog. I've given up reporting poems as nothing is done, so what is the point. hugs Jan xx
Date: 6/11/2025 10:26:00 AM
Since AI has been mentioned over the past year or two, I have noticed a few poets who have significantly improved in their writing "skills." I have been told names of people using AI and this really brings down my respect for these people. Then I see judges rewarding their behavior and that is disgustiing as well. I don't know where all this is headed. Maybe one day it will be competition of robot writing. Who knows. I will just keep writing my best and hoping for the ability to discern the entries in my own contests that are AI. Sadly, this makes a lot of work for judges. A side note: Knowing names of those using AI and seeing their poems, I find their "poetry" actually rather monotonous.

Baffling indeed. I'd say downright ignorant to claim AI as your own poetry. It shows a real lack of integrity. Of course, I won't give up on the site, Dilly Dally. I only wish people would learn true honesty. I would never want to use AI for anything at all. It takes all the fun out of being real.

I think if we get ultra het up about it we'll end up abandoning the site. So just doing our best as individuals is probably all we can do. The poetic 'voice' does tend to be missing in the AI poems, at this point anyway. There are beautiful AI poems though, so it is difficult. The point of claiming to be a poet baffles me and accepting credit they've not earned though is so very questionable.

Not every sponsor checks for AI Andrea and it can be hard to detect and the checkers aren't 100% accurate but when you check with 3 different checkers and see 'significantly improved writing skills' (I like the way you very tactfully worded that!) then you quickly know something is amiss. xx
Date: 6/11/2025 8:48:00 AM
So, if we cut out all this 'winners' malarkey, then we are left with challenges where the poets propose a title prompt which everyone can read and comment upon the poems whilst it is up - as is the current practice.

You raise an interesting point: A poem that is destined for a contest entry would most likely get more views and perhaps more comments (engagement). But will the bots not zoom in on this as fertile territory to click-bait unsuspecting readers - even ending up as POD in the process? Also, I know that many (not all) like to have a look in at their 'competion' to see what they are up against in a contest. That is all good and well, but if the 'trendsetter' has got it wrong, many follow over the cliff to the inevitable N/A. So, I am in two minds whether my future contests should have identifiable titles, or not. All views welcome. On the subject of AI winning contests: At least the top 3 - no!

I appreciate your thoughts Su but like you point out, that's a matter for individuals and there would be no perfect solution. I don't think I've noticed a higher calibre differential in relation to the title requirements of a contest, although I understand your point. I think we're clear it's no fun seeing AI win contests but I want to be cautious not to focus on what sponsors should or shouldn't do as I think, like yourself, they are already doing their best in difficult circumstances.
