Too little
too late
God said to me
in this dream I had about fate

So I asked him
what did he expect,
A goody two shoes
a prophet
a saint
to be something I ain’t

Not at all he said
I want to be entertained
Eternity is boring
mostly people snoring
especially at night
and during the day on occasion

Look god! I walk around an
Amazon warehouse all day
pigeon-holing tat
picking this and that
How am I supposed to amuse you

Well I do enjoy you
breaking stuff on purpose
sabotaging the line
Bunking off for a smoke
going to the toilet
and drinking erm… doing coke

Ok hands up!
I admit
I’m a total chancer
and do stuff I shouldn’t
But it’s alright isn’t it
that Amazon place is full of s-hit

Yes it is a terrible kip
but more fun when you entertain
Like in your last job
listening to you lie
not taking the blame
asking me to help out
In your moment of doubt
All that stuff you stole
and barely got away with
on the whole
That was quite funny!

Oh the (paper and plastic) I gathered,
before selling it to the highest bidder
Throwing expensive stock out in the trash
The owner was a bastard
all things considered
a miserly swine
But nevermind
Thanks!
I did need a dig out that time

Hey! remember when I was aged about 7
and was told my pal went to heaven
Why did it happen
A year later walking to school with another kid
he was only 8
And that nut-job attacked us with a hammer
Put a hole in my friends head
The blood pumped in fountains of red
I thought he was dead
All the gore I’ve seen
witnessed a killing at 18
Trying to hold down an abattoir job in between

Yes! Life ain’t pretty by design
sometimes the stars just won’t align
Others times they go nova
and leave black holes behind
still you’ll never really understand
The powers in command

So how about this poem
Will it see me home
Does it amuse you
are we cool?

You’re still alive aren’t you!

A poem that delivers David...serious questions dressed in a clever coat of humor...deserving of POTD medal. Always been troubled by the thought of being a source of amusement when, on those lazy days, the gods are seated around a table in Olympus and we are but entertainment to give relief to their divine boredom. Cheers my friend.

Ah Paul great to see you, I’m just finding my way back after a break so have a lot of catching up to do, indeed eternal boredom is a troubling prospect to ponder, I try get around it by destroying the universe sometimes and let it reassemble itself with no memories of the previous one, well maybe a few faint echoes, but nothing concrete, well it’s either that or us being perpetual amusement for the gods, thanks for stopping by while the universe is still intact! cheers David

Good to hear from you Anne-Lise, I’m not long back after a break from PS, was great to get POTD today, especially for this pov existentialism laid bare, cheers David

Well, it certainly amused me, David. And I have often had the thought that "eternity" must be rather "boring"...after the newness wears off.

Thanks Jim glad you got some amusement from this one, I think you see the crux of my poem here, an eternity needs something different going on (a newness) and total unpredictability, cheers David

Congratulations on your POTD win. What a creative write. We only have today. God has a sense of humor. I see it daily. If He did not we would all be gone. Have a blessed day with your win.................

Heya Paula, I can only put an agnostic slant on life, but yes it would appear a god or God, would need a sense of humour to be amused by us and put up with us, I agree with your pov if he didn’t we’d all be gone, cheers David

(God only knows) as the rhetorical saying goes, I try not think about tomorrow for that very reason super Mo, thank you so much for lovely comment and congratulations, cheers David

Hello David, Congratulations on your POTD! I truly found it to be very entertaining, as the struggle continues between unpredictable and unfair. I think that the best part is where human struggles and moral failings can be a source of amusement. As one of my psychology professors would say, “Are you creating a life worth living?” Congrats again! – Blessings, my friend, Daniel

Thank you Daniel, I appreciate you stopping by with congratulations and wise words, “Are you creating a life worth living” the only logical answer seems to me, let it run its course, and then we will see if it was worthwhile, or indeed entertaining along the way, but the truth is I probably will never know for sure, thanks again, cheers David

A fleeting moment in the spotlight Lin, and a very big surprise, perhaps this one resonated with a few of the deeper thinkers on the soup, or at least entertained them, still I’m glad I wrote this one, and am still alive today, thank you for the return Visit with the Newspaper Headline (nice touch) cheers David!

A little (well quite a bit ) unorthodox look at the human condition Karen, I was in need of catharsis, this one helped me out, cheers David

Got to say Tom I’m hugely surprised this one ever seen the light of day, never mind POTD, maybe the algorithms in my dream hit it off with the soup’s POTD algorithm, It is what it is, and I thank you very much for stopping by with the good news, I hope people see this one more as an existential search, than anything else, cheers David

When we entertain strangers, we are showing hospitality to the Lord, I've read. Entertaining our crushes, our spouses, our children, showing we care, with some vanity and lots of love. Expected of us; kindness, honesty, respect as we journey through our course with no room for contemplation on the ugliness. Our choices and its effects become part of us as actors. The world our stage the audience; the gods or a god whatever it’s there I feel it. We act, react “entertain” all possibilities with no answers but what’s in our heart. Soulful poet seeker, life’s a journey poet prince with your golden pen let your sorrows spill, its time.

Heya Anaya, these trying existential ones are always difficult to comment on, so thank you for braving it out, did/do I tempt fate is probably a question I ask myself most days, and if I cannot find a true faith then I must question why, as I said before I’ve gotten out of some disturbing scrapes in my life, while others didn’t make it, some are referred to in this poem, was I helped by a god, or just lucky I honestly don’t know, so I draw on two conclusions either life is random chaos, or we’re here to entertain, maybe even both, thanks again for your over kind comment, cheers David

What a notion that God expects us to entertain him. It's more like he'd rather not witness the drama that unfolds on earth these days. You're not being irreverent, and I accept your search for the possibility of divinity, but I was entertained by all of your lead in lines to what I consider to be the crux of your poem... the last two verses and the very last line. Felt a bit of Deja vu on your nova/black hole perception and smiled at your askance if He still lives. Love your journey to get here

Heya Lin, you’re right I did mention the nova/blackhole effect to you recently in a comment, it was fresh in my mind and seemed to fit right into this piece, alas sometimes I look at life and actually come to that very conclusion of us being here for some kind of entertainment, poetic licence is in use here, and it’s not to be taken literally, for the simple reason I haven’t actually got the answers only questions, and outlandish theories on the human condition, thank you also for commenting on this one, cheers David
