An art installation where Abramovic's goal was, essentially, to remain present "in the present" for the over 700 hours that the performance lasted (3 months). Inviting audience members to both witness and join in this "presence". There an interesting angle of her former lover and art collaborator attending. Details beneath poem. The poem is really just inspired by the installation rather than about. https://www.moma.org/audio/playlist/243/3133 https://youtu.be/Sf8o1teJdXo?si=jTDPNfRo6PzYxQLp

without you pressing my nerves may I ask you 'what is this life?' intricately untangle every fibre set me down a moment can serenity be practiced unravel connections isolate and remove expectations ask me 'what is life?' sit with me, still let forever wait in the wings meet my eye reflect my humanity extinguish flames of thought consume my longing in essence ~ breathe me in could we ever transcend gifting our entire selves hoping to matter while all constants shift nothing but moments ever matter eyes met observers stood time ended the grasp now just into empty space contemplation is a death stare the moments are counted ~ should they be mourned ~ now blind to how they occurred cautiously shutting eyes to ever afters cradle me until I'm stronger shut me off in-between wakefulness I fear I'll suffocate in the hours of dead air when I awake to exist again, tell me you loved me More about the artist and installation: One of the attendees was unexpectedly her ex lover and former art collaborator that she hadn't seen since they had used an art performance that had been intended to be their wedding but had ended up being the end of their relationship. They hadn't seen each other for 22 years. They had planned to walk from separate ends of the great wall of china and meet in the middle to marry but the permission took nearly 8 years to obtain, by which time their relationship had broken down and the event instead marked the end of their romantic and artistic 12 year relationship. Marina Abramovic and Ulay Laysiepen's art collaborations were intense, boundary-pushing, and deeply personal, exploring themes of trust, endurance, physical and emotional limits, gender dynamics, and the tension between individuality and unity. Their performances often involved extreme physicality, prolonged endurance, and deep psychological vulnerability. The "Artist is Present" installation also was very impactful on many of those who participated. Bringing many to tears at feeling seen.

Your poem ties in perfectly with the new direction that art is taking, namely Metamodernism: a response to modernism and postmodernism. Anything other than this well-crafted poem would not have done it justice. Thank you for the illuminating notes, DD – I found it fascinating.

Ahh how lovely that this one has a mini revival :) I adore how art hits differently for different people. Your comment is so kind regarding my poem Su and I'm delighted the art itself piqued your interest :) I really enjoy exploring the reaction space in relation to art. Sometimes in galleries I'll observe those walking by my favourite paintings - the stopping to study, the double backing, the excited conversations with other viewers and then those who don't look at all! Thank you so much for stopping by, much appreciated x

This write and the art installation are very thought provoking. To just sit in silence and explore the inner psyche. To see if we can establish a non verbal connection with a stranger. Absolutely intriguing. And the complexes of your poem intersect with the exhibit perfectly.

I paint in the abstract. The background pic on my page is my own. I also like Dali and such.

I found this installation so interesting and the back story of the intensity of the previous collaborations mind blowing. Exploring self and humanity through art really fascinates me, as does the abstract and the surreal. Makes my poems pretty niche at times but I love it. Thank you for stopping by. I'm pleased your shared my enjoyment of this one :)

This one is so you Dilly Dally! Perception, Time, Past, Present, Future, Humanity, Consciousness, even Absurdity, I watched the beautiful moment when Ulay turned up, its somehow upsetting and uplifting all at once, your poem delves deeply into the human psyche, picking apart reality using transcendence and death stares, I’m delighted you brought Marina’s incredible feat of endurance to poetic life, and my attention, I might get a tangential poem out of this brilliant piece, cheers David

She had to train for both the sustained eye contact, limited movement, the emotional resilience. Literally experiencing the intensity of others humanity for 8 hours per day whilst also being observed. Reading about her previous collaborations with Ulay was shocking even with the benefit of time having passed, to have witnessed them would have been intensely emotive. I'm thrilled you found this so thought provoking also :) thank you for diving in and hope it does extend into a poem from you :)

This is so interesting! How did you find this? Iv never heard of this and i just watched the youtube video, and felt so many emotions watching that, true love, no matter what, time or distance or more, would always remain within, despite circumstances and life breaking two hearts apart! So touching and moving! I really love your poem too inspired by this and it feels like youv captured and delivered what exactly she must have felt that moment when she locked eyes with her former lover with whom she did endure so much! What hits the most to me is the line “what is this life” i wonder what happened next? Very soulful poem! Excellent! Pleasure reading this! Sending you light always

I was looking into immersive art installations when I found this and found the concept and the artists backstory absolutely fascinating. The intensity of the artists connection with Ulay was so compelling. He's no longer with us, but she's still active as an artist I believe. I appreciate you watching the video to get an idea of the experience. Art installations can be so emotive - I must look up local ones, although I wouldn't queue all night like people did for this one. Thank you for engaging with this slightly heavy one. Much appreciated commentary and light :)
