For Karen Jones Stevie Wonder Contest
When you believe in things that you don't understand
Then you suffer
Superstition ain't the way
- Superstition - Stevie Wonder
you cannot map an open mind
only pencil in the terrain
substance of self flitters and sways
confirmation bias produces a myriad of greys
"I believe in you" I say to a friend
because their existence helps mine ascend
we're all in deep with nothing owned
and it's human to want to be fleetingly known
"I have nothing you want", I say to the wall
as I'm panicking and trying my best to stall
quite as expected the wall stays schtum
but the walls have ears is a rule of thumb
I've never done wrong by my own estimation
and I'm quick to employ some self flagellation
I'm all of a dither about who I can trust
when anything and everything is called out as unjust
superstition hasn't got me too far
but faith in you is a door I've left ajar
you're a tonic and a little devil-may-care
and I just feel better knowing you're there
