I see the wood from the trees is taken they bare no malice in their spent state just disappear leaving a lonely landscape I linger in the drafting of possibilities how protection was a door how I gave back the heart the pointlessness of felling trees study the un-chalked outline wonder who fits what, if anything, fills voids scale all distorted everything is too big leaves trees leaving a place the world outside is so sparse is life really a thing or just a haze around veins and form seen through eyes that offer structure the whole shebang is out of place what happens when... you see the wood for the trees you hope you won't be lost you hope you won't be disoriented anymore but focus isn't our gift, we are too lost or too locked in on what's straight ahead

Whoa! This is soul hitting! Really’ so powerful and moving! The way youv interpreted the artwork, and how youv written this poem truly is deeply emotive! How so many of us live in a haze, oblivious to what could be, and possibilities as sometimes within closed walls or doors is where one remains comfortably numb! A very inspiring artwork and this poem really does make me feel so much especially the lines “is life really a thing or just a haze around veins and form seen through eyes” i wonder and the ending! This is a new fave for me! Sending you light always

Hurray! I do love a fave, thank you Ink! I think I kind of love how I know I wouldn't have looked at Magritte's work in the past but now I see so much in it. The juxtapositions just get the mind whirring :)

(Is life really a thing) great line Dilly, we certainly need consciousness to perceive reality, we also depend on our subconscious to formulate thoughts, not many can isolate and describe this process, but you can with these beautiful Ekphrasis, so what do I see hollowed out in the door, possibly Marge and Homer Simpson having a hug! Cheers David

Ahh you gift (or reinforce) additional dimensions in my poetry David! All I can think of now though is the Marge and Homer "Close to You" montage. It's totally them! Thanks for your thought provoking comment :)

I'm writing this before reading your post, and my first unartistic thought is this" Why would someone hack a door this way to see a leaf that's probably going to blow away in Autumn's first gust of wind? After reading, I see the shape of the missing door as the shape of a leaf, and sadness that if a tree was cut to make that door, now it's been ruined and the tree seen from the doorway is staring in disbelief..."Is this my fate?" Off the wall? I don't feel an amorous vibe.

Haha Lin, I imagine it's possible to see many stories in the surreal but I lean into existentialism here. Is anything real at all or do we just try and make sense of it all? Thank you for getting into the painting - I find surreal paintings are nothing and everything all at once :)
