It ain’t heavy it’s my boulder

One must imagine Sisyphus’s boulder, marble-sized these days And Ozymandias’ plaque, still spinning despair into praise Look on, ye hypocrites, and sneer at my undoing Your universe is a giant sandpit, entropy accruing Their legacies long crumbled, eroded by rust Gods built the wrong way, on scaffolds of dust Virtue or vice register equally the same Except between stars, there’s space for one more grain Down here, we clock in daily, stack hours like prayer Worship strong Wi-Fi, evangelize on thin air Imagine heavenly echoes, because the silence isn’t fair Some develop connection, others a thousand-yard stare Our Earth splits naturally, along seismic lines Greenwich claims centre stage, only for the meantime Sisyphus, still aching, gets an epidural at last But only in hindsight, for his hump blocks the past Redrawn are our own lines, watchtowers in the sand Sketching new borders, carving up the promised land Exhume ancient treasure, and black, viscous stuff Addicted to all things buried, as if our dead weren’t enough Still we write blindly, tracing glyphs already faded Helps lift the mood when depressed and jaded Gods stand on shaky ground, myth holds them together In schisms that bind billions, then sever forever Oh, look on—ye poet Sisyphus now rolls his eyes He’s seen the apps, wars, hoodies, and cable ties His hamster wheel’s a meme for gods who merely try Small wonder he mutters, at least Ozymandias gets to die And sometimes I pray to gods, or maybe their ghosts About versions of me I’ve been missing the most They don’t directly answer, but do leave this guess In the end, to keep on rolling may be my passing success By David Kavanagh

We have so much more info and egos are constantly stroked. It is so important to step back into the real world..occasionally bored, quiet, meditating on your own thoughts for their own sake, etc… Enjoyed this very much! Congrats on POTD!

Haha! Believe it or not Anaya, Prometheus’s eternal torment nearly made it’s way into this one as chopped liver for breakfast each morning, but I’ll save that for another day lol! Thanks so much for dropping back with congratulations, cheers David

Your poem is outstanding in a way that combines contrasting eras in history through carefully chosen words and rhyme. It rings to my ears like chimes in the wind. Congratulations on POTD. We'll deserved.

High praise Hilda, I am delighted this one resonated with you and rings in your ears like chimes in wind, how poetic! I enjoyed writing this one in rhyme without any syllable restrictions or tight contest rules, a real part of what I am is in this piece, thank you so much, cheers David

Dear David, Welcome back, and you came back with a powerful poem, it isnt always in a poem we feel various shades of emotions, I smiled as I read sispyphus roll his eyes, seeing what has become of the world; and I felt as i read the lines "Still we write blindly, tracing glyphs already faded Helps lift the mood when depressed and jaded" so true, and i think many can resonate with those words. Theres so much delivered here using mythology and realism, which not many can do in such an engaging manner! Pleasure visiting your poem: congratulations on receiving potd! Well deserved! Sending you light always

Heya Ink I’m delighted you enjoyed this piece, and see way beyond humanity’s hubris and facade, as indeed Shelly did when he wrote Ozymandias over 200 years ago, its arguably more relevant now than ever, as for entropy I’m not convinced it’s the (be all and end all) insofar as the cosmos is concerned, I have my own theories on that lol! I’ll take that light you send with open arms, thanks so much for great comment and congratulations, cheers David

Hello David, Congrats on POTD! Your humor and insight cut right through the absurdity, making the struggle feel oddly noble. Very clever existential ride. Spring Blessings, My Friend, Daniel

A fair comment Daniel (oddly noble) does it for me every day, I do tend to see the absurdity and perhaps laud more absurdity upon it, existentialism is indeed at the heart of this piece, and most of my poems, for better or worse lol! Thanks so much for stopping by today, cheers David

David, this is outstanding--mythic, sharp, and full of movement. The way you weave Sisyphus and Ozymandias into commentary on persistence and decay feels both timeless and urgent. That stanza on worshipping Wi-Fi and evangelizing on thin air hit hard--it’s painfully sharp in its observation of our era. There's a quiet resilience beneath it all, a defiant impulse to keep writing, imagining, pushing forward despite entropy. This was an incredible read, David. Congrats on your POTD.

You sum my poem up with keen insight and wonderful comment Mickey, one does wonder what the great Ozymandias and Sisyphus would make of our modern tech world, and battle to keep entropy at bay; fast forward another 3000 years I’m not even sure if humans will still be here, hopefully they are, and go easy on us lol! Thanks so much for stopping by today with congrats, cheers David

That’s a great phrase Dilly, (juggling boulders) especially for anyone struggling through life be it emotional or physical, but I’m glad you used it as a metaphor for optical delight, such is the poetic mind you possess, thanks so much for uplifting comment and congratulations, cheers David

Ha thanks so much Lin, and smile on, the nature of life is just to enjoy the moment at hand, so I won’t be wasting time building any statues of myself that will eventually crumble, this one is for the common man/woman, that shoulder the boulder everyday, cheers David

...created is a real brain teaser. One being envious of the other is quite a construction. You've got me thinking about the nature of human biology. We get to experience what we have due to the specialized nature of various tissues and organs. Yet that very specialization condemns us to die. So, we can't have everything. I'll just take smiling for the time being until calling it quits!!

I do try to smile my way through most situations that life throws up Duke, except when the universe or the Gods seem to be conspiring against me, I’m sure most people will relate to that at some point in life lol! I’m not calling it quits just yet either, the price we pay for life is indeed our tissues, organs, and ultimately mortality, thank so much for stopping by with wise philosophical comments, cheers David

David, you've penned a very thoughtful poem about living and the meaning of it or lack of meaning of it all. I particularly liked greenwich claims center stage only for the meantime. That pun made me laugh. I also liked the ending. Since we're stuck here for a brief period, we might as well make the best of what we have. Some of us are lucky enough to have a feeling of pleasure being alive. Something to strive for and obtain before we leave. The interplay between Sisyphus and Ozamandias you've

Well written poetry. Evangelizing on thin air? JW's are making 250k to 300k new disciples of Jesus Christ every year. In a world that collectively hates them, it's a modern day miracle. Roll on David...

Sisyphus-my patron saint, whether it's Sisyphus rolling the boulder up the hill for eternity or buddhas analogy of the dog chasing its tail, it resonates. Some say life is short, but a day can be eternity, at the end death can be a friend, (not that i promote that) poets weird about it. A mind expanding read, David. Wild horses couldn't keep you away I see~ good thing and i'll fave as well!

Heya Anaya, I agree life is all about perspective and how consciousness resonates within, poetry perhaps too binds us all together for better or worse, with a fate like Sisyphus one could imagine death being his friend, but Camus said one must imagine Sisyphus being happy, thank you so much for stopping by and the Fave, cheers David

I've stood on the prime meridian at the Royal Observatory in Greenwich and observed up close Ramesses II Luxor Obelisk in Paris. So right now I'm feeling all the tingles tuning into a David Kavanagh original that draws together these and many other intellectually stimulating elements :) Do I start at the end?

Heya Dilly, I’m sure that boulder gets all the way down to Planck size eventually before its journey starts again, but a marble seemed about right for now ;) so you have first hand knowledge of the meridian in Greenwich and Ozymandias (Ramesses) obelisk pretty uncanny, I felt a certain affinity with Sisyphus when writing this piece, what a terrible punishment those old gods meted out to him perhaps to all of us, I had some great days in the sandpit as a kid, and loved moving big rocks about the garden to my mother’s dismay lol! I’m delighted with such a great comment from you and Fave, cheers David

It's predestined I'm sure... Nothing changes for the underdog, maybe being happy in a sandpit is better than greatness? Distracted oblivion better than the overt life of a slave? So much to ponder in this poem David - I could leave comments all day but a key fascination for me would be Sisyphus' boulder getting to marble size - I feel excavation of that idea will reveal much. It's a fave, absolutely and completely being revisited. Your poetic voice resounds loudly in this! As always - expertly done!

Faving for lines... "Look on, ye hypocrites, and sneer at my undoing," and "Sisyphus, still aching, gets an epidural." Using Shelley's Ozymandias.. I could go on, David, but you know I'd have to list many more lines that were just as creative. I wish I could dig that deep into my inner self to write something like this.

You have me spoiled Lin, and I’m pretty sure you could dig down into your inner self and write on this or any subject whatsoever, the fact you can relate to this or even these characters shows it’s within you as a human being, the poetry is secondary, thanks so much for the bonus comment and Fave, cheers David

I'm in so much awe after reading this twice, David that I don't know where to begin praising what you've created. I immensely dislike the time you take for yourself when you exit the PS door, but if this is what you create while you're away... it's ALMOST worth the wait for your return. Sisyphus should've kept rolling his eyes as we do here when the boulders become too heavy to roll uphill alone. That's what friends are for. He should've let it roll downhill, landing where it may. Welcome back, sweet friend.

Heya Lin, thanks so much for high praise and warm welcome back, I’ve been out of sorts for a while now, and was inspired after reading Shelly’s Ozymandias the other day, Sisyphus just seemed to roll across my mind as he does now and again, So decided to put my shoulder to the boulder and give him a dig out, I’m delighted you enjoyed this one about the ancients with a modern twist on this insane world, thanks so much, will visit your page soon I’ve a lot of catching up to do, cheers David
