AI in PS

Blog Posted:6/7/2025 5:39:00 AM

It is disheartening to see more and more people are posting AI generated poems. They are also submitting these poems to contests. It's a disgrace, dishonest and should be banned!!

Poetry should be authentic, written from the heart with emotions and something that has meaning to that person, Not a stolen poem or AI genergated poem posted just to win in contests.

PS Admins, please consider adding an AI tool to the website. We need an updated list as well of AI tools that are up to date.

Lastly, I will be checking for AI and plagiarism in my contests. I am considering no longer sponsoring contests for this reason. It's not fair for some superb and authentic poets on this site to place 2nd, 3rd or not at all and AI generated poems get the trophy placements in contests.

If you have not noticed the world has gone crazy. AI is just a part of the this new crazy world we now live in. For years I have written about AI. I have a "New" AI write on my page. After reading the comments below, I feel I may have the answer. If you write in AI then put "Written By AI Poet." on the bottom of your work. I have been putting "Written By Human Poet." on the bottom of my work. I think it is great the sponsors of the contests are checking for AI in their contests. It does not seem fair for a true writer to be in with a machine. Maybe some of the contests should be run Only for AI poets. Let them have their turn where all can see and read. I still say, "True writers write from their heart ~ AI does Not have a heart to write with. I hope everyone will take these words with the love they are written with. Have a blessed day writing away...................

Hi Suzette, No, you’re not wasting your time running contests but as I’ve been trying to point out in this blog, you are wasting your time fighting AI.

I understand why people are so upset and angry, the thought of rewarding those cheaters just to boost their ego bites at the soul. I hope you stick around, there are too few voices here as it is.

I am afraid that Grok 3 had just made a fool of me and my wild claim that my new poetic form could fool AI. It even wrote poems that might be considered better than some of my best efforts. I am disheartened, to say the least, Richard.
Date: 6/10/2025 10:19:00 AM
I just had the shock of my life! I gave Grok 3 my new proposed "AI proof" contest details and it instantly produced 2 fairly good poems in succession. The one showed up as 43% possible AI, and the other as 56% possible AI. So, a guideline of close to example 100% is absolute nonsense. Are we wasting our time by running contests?

Now, a lot of AI poems are winning contests toppling entries of genuine poets!! PS contest sponsors must be aware of this by using an advance tool for checking AI and plagiarism or better not run a contest. It's very devastating!

it makes me angry as a teacher too, Tania. I can tell my students are using it. At this point in my life, semi-retired. I do not even care . I don't get paid well as a private teacher, not well enough to use AI to correct every little thing my students do. Hang it all!

I feel exactly the same as you Linda Alice and as a result I spend less time on the site and enter fewer contests. sadly even limericks can be penned using chat GP and when you see multiple postings of them it raises a red flag especially when you check other works by a poet and it shows 100% AI!
Date: 6/9/2025 3:29:00 AM
I hope you don't stop sponsoring contests Tania but i have discovered CHAT GP has a specific area which will write limericks and as they are so short they wont get picked up by the AI checkers. I can assure you I write all my own poetry and will never stoop so low as to enter a poem I had not written 100%! hugs Jan xx

I.v been reading some replies on this subject on this thread that some say's along the lines of 'just try to write better poetry to beat the AI. !! For me, I'm now seeing the mind set of the AI cheerleaders :( We are not in a chess game with the AI!!! Progammers argue its 'Art' and that they want recognision for it because they say it takes hrs and hrs and hrs to programme it ! So who are the souless ones, the AI or the programmers ? *note..l have extreme cognative illness that also effect my eyes, hearing, hand co ordination etc, so there will always be grammar issues in my writing, so please, any readers who do not like it, do not soupmail me about it like iv had before.

l just wanted to add today , (that in case anyone says to me that) l do know that AI can already make decisions for it-self. My comments are referring to the stages that AI developers are pushing for , the 7th stage in programming.ie AI super intelligence , now set out for 2026 to 2035. They want to be able to connect with other life forms ie animals, plants and humans brains. which l understand in form of implants to share intelligence. AlphaGoZero an AI ,l think was put to test with human and won 100% at stage 3.AI is scary stuff !!

..l ask this question..are people ' watching' what is happening with AI development ? Few yrs ago l spoke many hrs with an AI programmer on a Music forum. He was a top AI developer & he was interested in having exchange of views with me, as no one else on the forum was interested. He said the tech now is , that AI will be so advanced & it will be be so perfect, it will able be able to program itself ie it will not need human input, that AI will make decisions for itself. He said he couldnt wait. Who's going to be able to detect it or stop it ?

..added note..iv even had it said to me that AI will help disabled peole like me have a better quility of life ? to what advantage is that ? l have freedom but i'm also imperfect..AI programmers want t it to be' perfect' Think about that..'they want it (AI) to become God'
Date: 6/8/2025 11:42:00 PM
I'd much prefer it if people just admitted they use AI so yes, let's have a separate section or dropdown for it at PS. Just an idea but I'm wondering if the responsibility for putting each contest poem through a specified AI checker should lie with the person entering their poem instead of the judge with each contestant having to indicate the % of AI found next to their poem.. Not totally satisfactory and a bit cumbersome but it may act as a filter of sorts. Yours desperately hoping A I isn't 'the end of the word'. Cheers - Gary

That is true, richard, about legal issues. I think it's up to us as members or as judges to determine how to deal with the issue. there are many tools available.
Date: 6/8/2025 2:10:00 PM
Hi Tania, I am checking all poems in my contests for AI, if I check on a detector and if it indicates AI, I check it on another, and then another and maybe another etc. and usually 3 will say AI and one will say human.. and I go with the 3 that say AI and that poem will not place no matter what. If the person complains, I just tell them, your poem was confirmed to be AI, end of story for me as I note it in all my contests, no AI accepted.

I'll respond and say a community of poets is only as strong as the bond they share, which should be writing and posting poetry. There is a PS rule that stipulates that no AI poetry is allowed, but that's not one that's being upheld. I've said many times that there seems to be no immediate solution to the AI issue.

I see people saying AI has no life, soul, passion yet it still wins contests, it’s just another competitor in the contests, you just need to write better poetry to beat this lifeless, soulless, passionless entity. Take care, Richard

I strongly agree with you, Richard. It feels like just another entrant at this point, and not necessarily my biggest competitor at that. I get why people are upset though. The only real control we have is over ourselves. So as a poet, I don't use AI, as a contest sponsor I try to avoid placing AI if I spot it, and as a community member, I stay out of AI poets' comment sections so I don't inadvertently boost their engagement. It's a good discussion overall either way.

I have chirped in (now removed as it was rude). But here is my penny's worth: There are remedies, but are we ready to think outside the box? AI is predictable in text because of how it is programmed, whether to write a music score (it is original - much like each math equation is original), but literature - and by extension, poetry - is for now still in our hands. Remedy: Know your craft and be a better poet than AI - that way we can bamboozle it with unique content and putting some feeling behind our words, i.e. evocative poetry always wins the day. AI can check my grammar, spelling, text for clarity - but not let it into my mind (weird enough as is ... ). Have a nice weekend, folks :)

AI is causing massive problems in the Creative Arts. l once mentioned few yrs ago on another it will destroy the Music Industry & l got a backlash from the tech bro's who believed it was the best thing ever for mankind. They said it was now getting 'so perfect'. Many music Artist use it & no law as yet for them to revel it. l said it wiil cause problems as AI is at moment data taken from the input of humans,so who owns the legal rights? Now l saw one lawsuit over Artist bought lmusic ideas & the seller had used AI generated & sold them to Artist. the orginal of the music caught it and tried to sue Astist, so Artist trying to sue the seller of it who said Artist should have...l'll continue nk box,,

They’ve thrown me out for less, but I digress. Unfortunately we can’t put the genie back in the bottle. All this technology that’s supposed to improve our lives just makes us less human and more mistrusting. AI makes us lazy creatively and intellectually. Soon humanity will become nothing but bones and sinew and a web of unused neurotransmitters and all of us a collective organism searching for our lost individual host.

I see this happening too. It's truly pathetic. I try to come up with contest ideas that will not make it easy to use AI, but I am probably beating a dead horse. I think it's really obvious when AI is being used with free verse, so rarely do I ask for free verse in my contests.

Interaction between us as individuals has been in the decline for many years, through the internet and mobile phones its so easy to hide behind a name and a screen and spout obscenities, to belittle others, to cheat and lie, what is real ? what is fake? This is only the beginning of the decline, AI has already tainted the potential we have as humans in how we express our love, our pain, our memories this is part of each and everyone of us, you have from nothing built a community at times imperfect to share your creations, some of which are genius some less so, but that's not what matters, its the pride you feel knowing you achieved something special, that it's your own creation, and you've reached out to this new and growing community and shared something of you, and asked for their acceptance, which sadly isn't always forthcoming but nothing in life is perfect, including myself, but there are wonderful people on here who deserve a voice and deserve to be read, but the more AI infiltrates the less the pure human voice will be heard. in the decades to come who will want to be a true poet, what would be the point when it can be done by a few clicks. no need to tax the brain, are we not lazy enough without condemning our brains to the same fate, if true poetry is to coexist with AI surely it should be done on separate and not shared platforms clearly expressing the differences, then its up to everyone else to decide what they choose to read. poetry like people isn't perfect but we accept and embrace foibles/imperfections in its purest form in stark contrast to the synthetic airbrushed world of AI.

Danny, you've expressed so very seriously, eloquently, and truthfully what every poet who has spent lots of time on this site... giving of themselves through poetry... pieces of their heart, their hurts and shared moments of happiness should be feeling. Some of us have made lasting friendships that no AI can tear apart. If you can see what the community is capable of in your time here, imagine what those of us who have spent much longer expressing ourselves in line after line are feeling since AI has infested our community. Thank you for your perceptive voice.

I've never used AI to create a poem or essay, but was once accused of this in a Facebook group. After talking to her about it, she used a different program and said that it wasn't AI - I'd had that poem posted on PS for years and was entering it in one of the group's weekly contests. It was really irritating to be accused when I KNOW and God knows I've never used AI for my writing. I did use it to create images on Substack, but never my words. Thanks for posting this. It's truly a huge problem but, like most, don't know the 'fix'. I hope no one ever thinks that about me again though. It was terrible to be accused knowing I'm innocent of this. God bless you all.

Andrea, I agree that we are in the end times. Romans 1:28 ......God gave them over to a reprobate mind..... Never thought it would progress this fast.

Hey Lin! Soon, we will not be able to distinguish between Human and AI. All AI needs is proximity, by that I mean the ability to hunt us down anywhere on the planet. This will come in time with the advancement and spread of robotics.

Lots of things are leading to society's collapse. AI is a big part of it. Other things are also taking away people's ability to form good judgement and to really "feel." I see blatant lies all the time in memes and news reports, and I feel like some of the preposterous "facts" are being generated by AI. or downright liars. I believe we are in end times and nothing will fix the situation. So sad to see all this happening right in front of me. I have felt it coming ever since 2000 and now picking up speed.

Sorry, Dave. We can't go back to that archaic way of human thinking. 2025: AI Odyssey. Hi Rob ;-)
Date: 6/7/2025 8:36:00 AM
Yes, I agree. However as of my understanding there is no infallible tool available to certify that the poem is AI or not. I spoke with an IT expert who said that now there are programs which humanise the AI generated writings. Whilst AI should no doubt be disallowed, if genuine original works are deemed as AI by the engines used, that too would be wrong. I’d welcome a solution, if it exists.

U.S, thank you. I am hoping that they keep developing and upgrading AI detecting tools. I hope a solution can be found. One would be for the fake poets to leave PS and other poetry sites.

to what you said about POTD being AI. yes, that is crazy. Soup needs to check THAT before giving out POTD's.

It is perplexing, Seeker. I know of one way in which AI users are humanizing their generated poetry but to name it here would be a terrible idea. I don't know how to rid the soup of it. It's become the same as an infestation of vermin.
Date: 6/7/2025 8:20:00 AM
You beat me to this blog, Tania. I'm so glad you posted it, and I couldn't agree more about everything you said. I'm checking ALL poems submitted to my contests from now on. If it's AI generated, it's gone. I don't care who wrote it, it's an automatic N/A. If nothing is done about this, I'll stop sponsoring contests altogether. TPS should get involved. What has become of Poetrysoup? *smh*

Thanks Ed. We need better detection tools because I checked a few of my poems before and it said AI and I wrote them. The tools are not fool proof. We need updated options.

Edward, I'm really happy to see you commenting about this issue. You and I have discussed it and the action you're willing to take is one everyone should be following.

Thank you Tania for posting this blog to raise awareness to all members of PS. It is really devastating to see AI poems winning contests especially premiere ones. These poets who use AI are not poets, they are fooling none other than themselves. :(

JCB, thank you and so true. I really don't understand it. My poems may not be the best poetry or fancy writing but they're 100 percent my work with thought and purpose.

I know one reliable guy who checked out ten poems of a new poet here. Totally AI each time. When I learn of something like this, it helps me to at least avoid them

Since AI is pestering this site, what we can do is to stop patronizing them if we feel their works are doubtful. We cannot simply pinpoint them because it is very unfair to those genuine poets to be accused of doing such crimes(plagiarism and AI) like in the case of Gina.

should we stop commenting to a person if we suspect them of doing this? I struggle with knowing what to do if they are always being nice and commenting to others.
Date: 6/7/2025 7:29:00 AM
This used to be a great site Tania, but not anymore. Standards have really dropped and something needs to be done. Like if you have a genuine concern and raise it but get ignored or fobbed off with some lame excuse. AI is taking over, I've heard many are using it and claiming it as their own work and winning contests, how do these people sleep at night, have they no shame?. Tom

I wonder the same thing, Tom. I know a few really good people who are doing it and bragging on FB about all their publication deals. Can it be that even publishers are not checking for AI?
Date: 6/7/2025 6:48:00 AM
Also, I notice people using certain words I just used. Not against that all the time but poems should be original. I am talking about, in the same contest. Sometimes, this could be a coincidence, I acknowledge, but other times, I’m like really!

Kim, plagiarism is another issue going on as well. There was a PS member a few years ago who was stealing her posted poetry from other poetry sites. She still posts on FB. Disgusting and pathetic.

A few times I have written a poem and then noticed another poet also used similar words or ideas as I did. I hope people never think I am looking at other people's poetry to do such a thing, but I always wonder what judges think if it occurs. i actually write many of my poems days in advance and don't even post them until later, so if a few poets are using phrases similar to mine, I think it is clearly a coincidence. the more specific a topic is (for example, Nette's alliteration contest for monoku), the easier it can be to assume people are copying each other when they actually are not
Lane Avatar

I noticed you'd mentioned that a couple of days ago, Kim. Just like my saying, "Really, people," it's really taking place. Do they think no one is wise to what they're doing? But what good does it do when they're getting away with it and being rewarded?
Date: 6/7/2025 6:41:00 AM
The brick wall Jan mentioned would be a hilarious cartoon if it weren't so revoltingly true. I posted several Monoku on the subject two days ago that stated my opinion, and by the number of comments that were made, it's become a grave concern. Administration... need I go into their lack of concern even though they clearly state..."AI POEMS ARE NOT ALLOWED.' Words without policing are useless.

Tania, thank you for drawing more attention to the use of AI's dominance in contests, but also in many postings and even some who've been using its analytical prowess to make comments. Really people! Why call yourselves poets if you don't write your own words? Try selling your AI generated poetry to magazines and see what replies you'll get.

Sadly Tania let's be honest, we know nothing will get done about it. I have given up reporting the poems which are 100% AI and it beggars belief that admin produced a book of AI poetry and when i took them to task over this they couldn't see what the issue was! This proves we are knocking our head against a brick wall on this subject. hugs Jan xx
