Chimney Swift Premiere Contest Winner

Chimney Swift My precious chimney swift Envy alone Has named you so mundane Tethered to the slightest pause Amid your life upon the wing Describing you as drab Cigar shaped And flying like a bat While within me Your beauty burns And I thank you so for that For from my human complications The conditions of my sin You do so delightfully Delightfully distract. Circa 2005

Maureen, There is something very special in the birds and poems you create. Part of a greater good perhaps? -Richard

My visit, makes that 433rd hit, going back in time, before U thought rhyme, ought to be pithy; U loved birds, always, happily (no biggie, that S word; S I N. ask Jesus)

Loving one's soul within is crucial, for that is what you are. Excellent write dear poet. What drew me to your poem were the words: Chimney Swift. The name of my residence for the last few months is: Chimney House, near a chimney tower, a historical place of the British era.

Maureen I know where you're at on this poem. Swift's have always been my favorite bird. They come out at dusk eating all the insects. One moment of memory sticks in my mind heavily, was when I was in Hania, Greece on Crete. I had just parted with a friend who was going back to Germany. I stayed in Hania for several days. Had a room overlooking the port, and with my food from the local market and wine, I would sit out as the sunset and watch the swifts and swallows. Ah what memories.

I know how you love birds. I too have a great love, but I found that my spirit animal is any kind of deer (elk; moose eh, antelope, and such.

The aeronautic masters have me spellbound. I wrote The Swallows about being in the midst of a feeding mixed flock, tree, cliff and barn swallows and chimney swifts, passing within inches. And then there's falcons... be still my beating heart.

Woe....this poem is fantastico. I think it is fascinating and very deep. I had to read a few times. My perception of what you are telling the reader, may be something entirely separate from what you are conveying. In my favourites. For later discussion.

Bonsoir Maureen! I've taken you up on your invitation to "comment", or rather read your first post in PS, but first - rather than pose as someone who has "something to say" - I'd rather beg for your permission to ask questions about your poem in order to elucidate certain notions I entertain on a first reading, for it's a poem that operates on several levels by my reckoning. In other words, I'm inviting you to a discussion which might be of mutual benefit at unraveling. Over to you. Wignesan

Thanks for the authorisation to begin the interrogation. (I'm having problems with my internet connection, so expect interruptions.I'll have to be brief.) Q1. Did you deliberately choose the image of the swift to serve the theme (at least at one level) to encase and highlight your own feelings of "complications" at the confessional level of representation of "guilt" feelings in your poem? Q2. To whom are you addressing your sentiments: the "swift" or to your own persona in the poem? Wignesan

Enjoyed reading your work..I remember when they got in our chimney and I did not know that they had made it their home..My daughter was out on a date and when they came in she said that there were bats out there..It wasn't bats..We put a cover over the chimney at night and the next morning built a fire then moved the cover off and they all flew out. When the fire went out we covered the chimney so they would not come back until we could fix it another way..Sara
