Notes About The Poem

    ~ ~ ~    Painting by Lin Lane  ~ ~ ~

His Feathered Image

Silently, he stood on the edge of a mirrored pool
For breakfast, he'd have to do a bit of wading
The egret's feathered image I wanted to capture
among wild cattails at this early morning hour.
He seemed to sense that I was watching him.
Stilted legs twitched, poised to take flight
but I was still as overhead, clouds hovered...
whiter yet, than this egret of the morning.

His regal head suddenly turned my way
but I dared not move, not to frighten him away.
His long, graceful neck turned from side to side,
as he tried to figure out if I was something to fear.
He took a stride towards me and then stopped.
A ripple on the pool caused him to change direction.
Breakfast was being served and so, he ate his fill.
I quickly sketched what I knew I'd have to paint.

Now there’s a guy who knows exactly what he wants and how to get it, and an artist too, but then you go one step further Lin, and get even more with this beautiful little poem, I bet he didn’t see that coming, cheers David

David, I was torn between wanting him to stay longer and wanting him to leave so I could move away from mosquitos who found me an easy target. lol. He didn't know he was posing for a portrait. Thanks for the remarks.

I admire the painting. I can see/feel so many elements going on—the movement of the clouds, and water—contrast (dark to light), texture (feathery, fluff), and gradation, complimentary colors. It all flows together. And with the egret searching for breakfast (I can see that) it creates novelty. Lin, great job.

I knew you'd come back with something like that. Seriously, Tom. I refused to try to paint since my daughter is an artist, but on a dare, I gave it a go and enjoy it.

Step one, Tom... pick up a brush. Sincere thanks for your kind comments. Anne-Lise has just started painting, so I hope she'll share them with us.

OH, you l'il devil you,...the poem and pic took me back to floating in a kayak and refraining from fishing to watch a master work. Also love the painting. It appears you have moved on from the "eight crayons" stage.

HA John. I still use crayons when coloring with my granddaughters, and I still color outside the lines with them. It's more fun that way. Thank you for the kind comments. There's so much to see if only we stop long enough to appreciate it. I'm glad to have brought back a good memory for you. I had a similar one with my Dad. We were paddling a pirogue when a few French ducks landed within shooting distance from us. Dad picked up his gun but he saw the look in my eye, and we just watched for a while. No, he didn't take a shot.

That's a very poetic quote, Beryl. Do you mind if I use it to write a poem? and... thank you for being such a gracious and kind friend.

A quote I just wrote especially for you Lin - “A poet brings a scene to a reader’s mind, a painter puts the scene in front of your eyes.” ~ Beryl

Thank you very much, Michael. It's been a while since I've visited that little pond, but I think about such moments from time to time. I was chatting with Anne-Lise yesterday and she mentioned my paintings because she's started painting recently. Michael, try to paint. I can't draw.

Wow Lin, your painting as Billy Crystal use to say,"You look marvelous." It is beautiful. Love your free verse as you put us there with you. You being so cautious not to spook the egret, and just being motionless. You could of heard a pin drop as you stood there gazing at him, enjoying his early morning meal. Loved how you manage to capture him in seeing him, and in Marvelously painting him. An Artist. Painter, Poetess you are Dear Lady. Thanks for sharing and enjoy the rest of your day. Maybe he'll be
