Take a Chill Pill

Take a Chill Pill

It's true that the soup has a funky froth going on right now. However, I think we can skim that froth away and get back to enjoying poetry.

There have been miscellaneous wants and needs expressed and let's admit - there are distinct unintended consequences to some of those major changes suggested. However, we don't actually need to be heavy handed with the salt or the spices when individuals could customise their own bowl. Let's have a little look at how that might work.

Contests

My personal preference is that contests continue to be judged and placements awarded on merit (I don't mind that this is subjective to preferences of the sponsor as long as it's reasonably fair. Just to state, I have done a LOT of contest submissions. I have also sponsored a number of contests.)

We won't have quality sponsored contests if the sponsors are publicly slated like has happened recently. The fact is they give their time voluntarily and the majority seek to employ a fair system of judging and are poets with skill.

The Recipe

  • Continue to have peer-sponsored contests. The reason I joined the site was the contests and the reason I stayed is the community feel. Let's not allow those things to spoil.
  • Continue to have contests judged on merit. Working hard on a poem and it being recognised is a good feeling. Yes, it not getting picked is disappointing but I've had NA poems that succeed elsewhere. The placement isn't the be all and end all and sometimes it's just good to pick up a prompt and run with it too.
  • Contests that showcase entries without a judging process or with minimal judging. This doesn't require a change. Silent One and John Lawless have done this before and everyone that entered got 1st place. Given any premium member can sponsor contests, if someone feels strongly that exposure to all entrants is important, then this can be implemented immediately by them, alongside the traditional set up. (Showcasing every member of the site would take decades, so we'll need to stick with 'in it to win it')
  • Reduce AI content: I think ideally we'd have a few contests that exclude AI and screen for it for at least the podium places. It would be nice to have a place to find genuine new poets. Contest winners have typically been that place.

Poem Lists

The way to view poems can be customised; here are some options.

  • New poem list- select display one poem per person. This allows you to see many more poets and you can spot your favourite, then check their page to see if they have any others. Fun fact - this also enables you to see the views and spot those just posted already with 200 views. #comedy
  • Favourites - just 'follow poets' and view only your curated list. Ta da! No spam poets or need to see anyone you'd rather not be exposed to.

The Best Bits of Soup

  • Community is really important here as is authenticity. Enforcing one size fits all will likely fit no one. It's really like original denim that is shrink to fit, customise for comfort.
  • POTD - it would be great if this was correct all of the time. However, it's still worth a read as regularly enough something great appears.
  • Authentic poetry - it's nice to read genuine poetry. There's a lot of it here. See my other blog about screening out the spam AI (I'm talking mainly new members who just post poems 100% generated by AI - I'm CLEARLY not talking about naming and shaming or freezing people out because they wrote a rhyming poem. To retain the credibility of a site we enjoy being part of the new poems page and contest lists simply can't be full of AI).
  • Free speech is welcomed in the form of constructive, respectful debate expressing varying opinions but acknowledging that views vary. (Free speech in the form of cold calls, flyer campaigns, tracker dog, publicity stunts or hijacking another unrelated blog is not my cup of tea or preferred flavour of soup.)
  • Peace and love - I'm for it, along with honesty, integrity and lack of drama.
  • Blog comments just on customising the soup for good please.

Let's embrace the great ingredients we already have (community, real poets, free to enter contests) and just tweak our own serving so we all can enjoy.

There are some readily available solutions that don't require any disregarding of views but maintain the preferences of regular users of the site who like the current format.

Haha thanks Paul, no AI in the making of this blog (other than asking it how to do HTML). Yeah I think there was a pill mix up during this discussion which elicited strange results.

Could create a new call and response poetry chain with this Su. AI poetry is like a polystyrene party cake passed off as hand made, a Father Christmas with a false beard, a bigamist, erm and the Wizard of Oz when his curtain drops :)

I'm here because your blog has brought much joy today. As a member, and not a sponsor I'm here for both the contests and the community feel. My N/A's do not affect my trust in the sponsors or compromise my integrity, although I do sense favoritism at times. I light up at the surprise POTD offers when I receive it. Brian S should be added to the list that showcase entries, methinks he started that. AI I'll leave to the sponsors skills and not 100% detectors, because they lie, I've tested them all. Pass that chill pill around! If I get unnerved by the bullying going on, then think of how many others do and will not participate because of it "this is more like trying to remove a platform for bullies to take an issue and use it for their own agenda and to exist peacefully on a poetry site" Go Dilly! :):):)

Thanks for your comment on my poetry contests. As Constance says of her own contests, I kind of consider many of my contests more as challenges than as contests because I want to showcase as many of my "winners" as I can, at least those that meet my criteria. I think we have a lot of sponsors with good intentions but a few rotten apples that I hope won't spoil our whole barrel! Nothing can ever be the way all of us want Soup to be but I think we still have pretty good rules. I think the AI thing is going to become more and more an issue. Sigh!

Thank you Andrea. Hopefully we can get back to normal again now. The site doesn't need reinventing but if someone wants to run their own style of contest where everyone wins then they are free to do so with immediate effect. Put their money where their mouth is and put in the graft of sponsoring contests. I appreciate all the interesting and fairly judged contests you have run x

I'll happily retain the chill pill if you agree to keep your lines about whether you dress to the left or the right to yourself. It isn't my idea of a healthy exchange of ideas at all, seems somewhat off topic if anything. Thanks but no thanks. End of discussion.

No misunderstanding. I won’t be taking a chill pill. You might wanna keep it. Different points of view are a good thing so as far as I can see no one needs to take a chill pill. You do believe in the healthy exchange of ideas don’t you?

I had to Google your reference Keith and got "The Red Pill terminology grew in male supremacist forums and was adopted more broadly by far-right and white supremacist groups to describe their own versions of awakenings, conspiracist worldviews that often overlaps with male supremacist positions, such as antifeminism." Therefore, I'd say no - this is more like trying to remove a platform for bullies to take an issue and use it for their own agenda and to exist peacefully on a poetry site.
Date: 10/12/2024 6:21:00 AM
Does it come in a liquid as i"m having trouble swallowing all this. I write poetry/poems all by myself, alone in a room. the idea that a "POETRY" site(?) would consider AI generated "poetry" AKA (FITB) to be allowed in any of its many forms is like drinking "near beer" and talking to a hand puppet.

I mean saying it's inevitable and therefore we should just wade through it does not sit well with me. If I wanted AI poetry I can generate that myself as well as AI feedback. I want human poetry that expresses the voice, not a replica. Anyone using it and passing it off as their own work is misunderstanding what poetry is about. You wouldn't pick a book up and just scribble out the authors name and replace with your own. It defeats the object of poetry and I personally want to say quite clearly I don't want to read AI poetry.

Thank you David. I don't write poetry or blogs to gain followers. I am concerned that if the site loses members due to AI spamming, move away from challenging contests, placements reflecting merit and removal of ability to post poems readily then there will be no site and the community will drift away.
Date: 10/12/2024 5:36:00 AM
Di11y, a well thought out recipe for well balanced and hearty soup, success on PS. I like your ideas. Unfortunately, there are some members (soup trolls) who continue to sour and spoil the broth and they will never be happy no matter what the outcome will be.

I've been saddened by the offensive comments about sponsors, contest winners and self published poets I read in one blog. I'm hopeful nothing like that occurs again. I'm not against alternate ideas but they need to reflect the views of those that use the site or run alongside them. I hope these suggestions can allow for implementation of their well intended type of contest and also ensure the traditional contests continue.
Date: 10/12/2024 4:26:00 AM
Dilly, your recipe sounds like a soup everyone should be cooking. We can each add a pinch of different spices, but too much salt and certainly too much pepper makes it unpalatable. The saying of "too many cooks spoil the broth" does hold true in PS because we are many with different tastes but that 'funky froth' you mentioned is ruining the broth. When that happens, the soup tastes more like a witch's brew stirred in a cauldron. No eye of newt or toe of frog, wool of bat and tongue of dog do we want that would spoil our soup. Thanks for your effort to offer a tasty recipe.

It just seems the biggest drama was caused over contests, yet any premium member with strong feelings regarding that can run contests that award each entrant a placement, further more they can offer praise and feedback to all entries and make this a regular option. I get that people are passionate when speaking up for others less inclined to be vocal and hopefully their passion can really help those that they represent by them sponsoring the types of contests that they believe are missing from the site. How lucky that the site has the system already in place for them to implement a change so important to them.
Date: 10/12/2024 4:15:00 AM
well said Dilly-Dally,I am so pleased you posted this well presented blog. As you know I am saddened about the reduction of poems from 10 to 5 - based on a VERY small minority's opinion of about 8 members some of who seldom even post poetry on the site. Your final 2 lines speak volumes. why change for changes sake to accommodate the views of a select few. a tweak to titles is ALL that is needed to stop poems disappearing quickly. If poets could use a short title on initial posting THEN add a full length title when it has gone off the main page then that would solve one big issue! write on! hugs jan xx

Dilly-Da11y what upsets me most is that admin covertly reduced the number of poems that can be posted in a day and are seemingly kowtowing to a small minority of around 8 or 9 people and not looking at other factors which can cause poems to go off the main page quickly. A good example is 6 of the same poem were posted today which takes up 12 lines on the new poems page. hugs jan xx

Jan, you've given me a great idea (between you and I) make the title longer than the poem I've got the whole page! Especially since I post one poem a week at most? Joshin ya Jan!

That's an excellent spot Jan. Adjusting the character length for titles makes great sense to ensure we can view more poems. There are so many reasons people post the full amount. I know people who are transferring their back catalogue of poems onto this site (making the lifetime membership attractive), so reducing how many can be uploaded will disrupt that. I also posted loads when I first joined (for a full on year or more actually) as I write for therapeutic reasons mainly. I did get criticised at times due to lack of understanding. Some members spent most of their day writing, so the reduction will be upsetting for them. Thanks for commenting x
