My biography will be very limited for now.   Here , I can express myself in poetic form but in real life I much rather prefer to be far less forward  I am a 60 year old American citizen , born and raised in the glorious South! A heritage that I am very proud of and thank God for as it is a blessing indeed ~

Currently married to my beautiful young wife(Riza) a lovely filipina  lady and we have a fantastic 7 year old son, Justin ~

I have truly lived a very wild life as a younger man but now find myself finally very happily settled down for the duration of my life~

I decided to rest here and express myself with hopes that it may in some way help others, for I see here a very diverse  and fine gathering of poets, artists, and caring folks~

Quickly finding friends here that amaze me with such great talent~~

I invite any and all to comment on my writes and send me soup mail to discuss

whatever seems important to them ~

LITERATURE AND MORALITY

This essay appears in the Winter 2017 issue of Modern Age. To subscribe now, go here.

In an age that offers Breaking Bad as an evening’s casual entertainment, welcomes Lady Gaga to the White House as a moral consultant, and allows displays on the Internet that ought to be inconceivable among civilized men and women, the plays of Shakespeare would seem to be a paragon of moral edification.[1] Nevertheless, not every commentator of conservative or Christian disposition has bestowed unqualified praise on Shakespeare, especially as a moralist.

In the preface to his 1765 edition of The Plays of William Shakespeare, Samuel Johnson complains, “His first defect is that to which may be imputed most of the evil in books or in men. He sacrifices virtue to convenience and is so much more careful to please than to instruct that he seems to write without any moral purpose.” As Johnson continues, he specifies precisely the issue we must consider regarding the relation between literature (or the arts in general) and morality:

From his writings indeed a system of social duty may be selected, for he that thinks reasonably must think morally; but his precepts and axioms drop casually from him; he makes no just distribution of good or evil, nor is always careful to show in the virtuous a disapproval of the wicked; he carries his persons indifferently through right and wrong and at the close dismisses them without further care and leaves their examples to operate by chance. This fault the barbarity of his age cannot extenuate; for it is always a writer’s duty to make the world better, and justice is a virtue independent on time or place.[2]

Although “he that thinks reasonably must think morally,” reasonable thought on the part of an author is insufficient: he must be more careful to instruct than to please, and must write with a—presumably explicit—“moral purpose.”

Johnson thus argues that an accomplished work of literature may have a deleterious influence on the virtue of its readers, with the implication that literary excellence and moral rectitude are not merely distinct but wholly separate qualities. While few contemporary observers are as suspicious of Shakespeare as was Dr. Johnson, we are concerned about the effect of violent computer games, licentious music videos, and vulgar rap lyrics on our children. Many men and women regard the representational arts as they do food: what is exciting and appealing is probably morally dubious, just as tasty foods are usually fattening and raise our cholesterol and blood pressure. Of course many progressive, health-conscious individuals who would never dream of consuming trans fats think nothing of ingesting films and novels that leave all manner of accretions in their souls and lower their levels of moral sensitivity. If there is a clash between morals and aesthetic appeal, so much the worse for morals.

Most nutritionists will argue, to the contrary, that an educated palate will find fresh, healthful foods more appealing as well as more nourishing. The same argument can be made about literature, especially from a Christian perspective. If God created everything and created it good, then a just representation of His creation ought to be good. Moreover, if the True and the Beautiful count as transcendentals convertible with the Good, then it is anomalous for what is beautiful to be wicked. If we probe this paradox, we shall discover that the elements of great art are likewise the elements of goodness, that moral and aesthetic considerations, while distinct, are not altogether different, and that artistic excellence cannot be intrinsically contrary to virtue. Nevertheless, the clear distinction remains, and while the highest artistic achievements cannot be evil per se in their essence, literary fiction bears such a complex relation to the reality of human experience that the moral configuration of a play or a novel, as well as its effect on readers and audiences, may always be problematic. Our educational and cultural policies should take this te...   much more at link given....

My personal thoughts on this -

Such is the responsibilty of  any person that cares to think of thier character as being a decent and brave man/woman. As standing upon principles set long ago- that evil is not to be ignored - ot must be faced. Yet in this modern world, just the opposite is being taught and has so been taught for at least 50 years, imho. That it is best to avoid confrontation. When truth oft is- it is easier to avoid confrontation. And also it far easier to let others stand up to evil, than it is to do so yourself. A poet above all of other writers should be more in tune with this problem and should care enough about his/her fellow man to not go along just to get  along. As such has brought many a nation(civilization) down, imho. Life is about more than personal wants/pleasures, wealth, ego and greed. It is about future generations and what we leave them. Should we not leave them better than we ourselves found?

I live in the United States. I understand that people in different countries are raised differently than I was. I’m not sure how things go elsewhere, but as an American it is my duty to stand up for those who need it. As I stated before, when I see a man chastising a woman I will do what’s right according to my culture.

That reminds me of an incident that I saw many years ago. There was a married couple fight at the end of the hall in my friends apt building. I knocked on the door as it was getting loud and out of hand. I could also hear a young child screaming. The police had already been called. When the door busted open a skinny little man came running out with his wife got on his heels. He got half way up the stairs when she caught him by the seat of his pants. She drug him back down the stairs and proceeded to beat the holy hell out of him. I just froze not knowing what to do. Thankfully the police arrived at the same time. Long story short, the woman who was three times his size was arrested and hauled away.

My father taught me to defend innocent people when they are attacked by any kind of bully. He certainly emphasized that point when it was a man attacking a woman. He cautioned tho' --if it is a husband/wife dispute-- steer clear of it, let the law handle it. As you are not to interfere in another person's marriage.

In these days of anything goes, usually making a profit, the economic drive above all others as become a worldly circus, as for future generations, yes Robert i believe we have tried hard, but it seems to get out of hand, when other influences take over. Even how we raise our children, can be in breech of the law, and again like all the other aspect today as it is when analysed there is someone making a heap of money..Gosh, i am not a religious man, but Jesus Christ had it sussed, we sure need him now.

So true my friend. Sad reality is some are and have been raised to think anything goes, if one is to succeed and lord over other "lesser beings".. Humanity is by nature evil but some think that evil, that cleverness is a gift. And such makes them superior to those that have it not or else those that dare not use it! When truth is- just the opposite is true, my friend. God bless...

We should always stand up and be counted in any sutuation. Nobody likes confrontation, many prefer the quiet life, hoping someone else will take care of it and everything will be rosy again with no cost to you. The recent evil that was flourishing in the middle east under the banner of ISIS, many said let them sort out their own problems, nothing to do with us, while innocent men, women and children were being slaughtered. Yet I heard of many ex service men going out there to join groups fighting them. Evil was flourishing but good men done something. We shouldnt be afraid to stand up for what is right and if it means pistols at dawn so be it and if you die at least you'll die with honour. Tom

What is important is that some have been put on notice that some of us will not stand by and do nothing, stand by in total silence. When a man bullies a woman that to me takes the cake for cowardice and low class behavior.. Either we want decency and civility or we dont. I know of at least 4 women that have been bullied by males in my years here.. Morality is more than just a word. At least it should be, imho..

Well said my friend. And well noted about many that say/think let somebody else do it. And in my opinion, some of those vilify the ones that confront whomever practices the black art of bullying others.. Fear being a great motivator to keep many silent, imho.. Sad but so true...

Out of all the conflicts I have been part of here, this most recent was unique in two ways. First, it involved more people coming up and out publicly against The Beautiful People. Second, I realized what may be driving some to leave. In the past, I could not understand why peeps left. Talking with Lin, you, and others along with the last comments in a blog that was removed, I realized it wasn’t the hostiles that drove peeps out, but betrayal from unsuspected parties. Before that blog was removed, there was a critical moment from a late participant who made a very important decision. Not always what we say or do, but often, what we don’t do that cuts the deepest.

Yes, a lot was made evident this time. Yet the blog was shut down and seems nothing meaningful came of it, except -- some had to jump to do image repair. imho.. The issue is that of morality. Seems it has little importance when TBP are exposed.. Works that way in real life too!!

I will take so much. For me when I see a man going after a woman, well I kinda of loose my mind as all can see. There is nothing more cowardly than attacking a woman. I will step up and defend every time. That is how I was raised.

(2) ... otherwise we are living hypocrisy. Yes, confront and fight for the righteous cause, but IS the righteous cause fought with any of the weapons of hatred? I see many people these days justifying their own fight by telling themselves that it's the right cause, (that's how hatred has been rationalized since the beginning of time), but as soon as I see them using hateful means - slander, names, etc. - the integrity of their argument is GONE. By responding to hate in kind, you are justifying its use, and are condoning your enemy's tactics. That's where such arguments lose me. By all means fight the good fight, but do it with kindness and an open heart, or you've lost me. Great blog, Robert, my friend.

Robert - I agree with all of this. I'm not helping anything. I sincerely apologize for not expressing myself correctly - I hope you will forgive me. I can write poetry, but my communication skills must be lousy, cuz I'm always being misinterpreted, clearly my own doing. I will bow out and I hope you and ANYONE who I've offended will forgive me - I am an old fool who should keep his "mouth" shut. So, so sorry.

No apology necessary.. I saw the point you were making, I also stated how and why my reaction was fully justified. Having a calm and rational dialog is the correct way to discuss the subject.

Taking action by speaking out , by condemning evil is not hatred-- not in my book. Jesus was no gentle in his anger, neither shall I be my friend. One must first be ready to admit who was at fault and who had a history of being at fault. Then it is easier to see why one person got angry and spoke out..

I totally agree, Robert, and it's an important emotion - we are defined by our darker sides and that's how we protect what and who we love. It's how we REACT that matters more, and using the same means that we were given, just condones the former. I am SUPPORTING your point here, though it seems like I'm not explaining it well, I guess. Maybe I should just stay silent. I apologize.

(3.) What was the significance of the temple action? Did Jesus lose his cool, as the phrase temple tantrum might suggest? Both the Gospel of John and the Gospel of Mark depict not a sudden rash outburst but something carefully planned. In Mark 11:11-19, Jesus visits the temple but waits until the next day to do anything. In John’s version, Jesus actually takes the time to make a whip from cords (John 2:15)

(2.) https://www.bibleodyssey.org/en/passages/main-articles/jesus-and-the-moneychangers Jesus and the Money Changers (John 2:13-16) by James F. McGrath Some people call it the “temple tantrum.” Others refer to it as the “cleansing of the temple.” Anyone who knows anything about Jesus, whether from books, movies, or other sources, seems to know at least this one incident, in which Jesus turns over tables full of coins and chases away animals. Most historians agree that an actual occurrence lies behind this story in the Gospels. But beyond that, there is a lot of disagreement. When did the event occur? And what motivated Jesus to drive money changers and sellers of animals out of the temple courts?

(1.)Sometimes --righteous anger is warranted. Sometimes one gets to the point where they say-- enough is enough. Hypocrisy is pretending those that insult, attack, then rush to erase--hide what they said- what they did -- are really the victim instead of the one so attacked.
Date: 3/3/2020 4:40:00 PM
(1) I live by the filter, thus: before I say or do ANYthing, I ask myself, 'will this harm or hurt anyone (or anything)', if the answer is 'yes' or 'maybe', I try to not to follow through, ('try' being the key word, I do NOT always succeed, as emotion and fallibility affect me as much as anyone else). That said, hatred is my only enemy, religion, cause, politic, etc., and I feel that identifying and 'outing' hatred and its guises, (lying, cheating, animosity, intolerance, slander, falsehood, racism, sexism, etc), is just as important as spreading love and striving to do things with character - living life by good EXAMPLE. But doing THAT must be done with love and forgiveness as well ...

Comments are welcomed, be they in full agreement or otherwise. Or just continue to turn a blind eye-- as such is so much easier to do. And certainly keeps one in the safe zone and gives that false sense of being so righteously above the fray, imho.
