Well, Here I Go Again - Your Favorite Poem or Poems

Blog Posted:5/19/2013 11:20:00 AM

I posted a blog earlier asking who your favorite poet or poets were. This time around I would like to ask: What is your favorite poem or poems?  Below are three of mine…Thanks for reading and for your participation

NOT IDEAS ABOUT THE THING BUT THE THING ITSELF
By Wallace Stevens

At the earliest ending of winter,
In March, a scrawny cry from outside
Seemed like a sound in his mind.

He knew that he heard it,
A bird's cry at daylight or before,
In the early March wind.

The sun was rising at six,
No longer a battered panache above snow . . .
It would have been outside.

It was not from the vast ventriloquism
Of sleep's faded paper mâché . . .
The sun was coming from outside.

That scrawny cry—it was
A chorister whose C preceded the choir.
It was part of the colossal sun,

Surrounded by its choral rings,
Still far away. It was like
A new knowledge of reality.

NO POSSUM, NO SOP, NO TATERS

By Wallace Stevens

He is not here, the old sun,
As absent as if we were asleep.

The field is frozen. The leaves are dry.
Bad is final in this light.

In this bleak air the broken stalks
Have arms without hands. They have trunks

Without legs or, for that, without heads.
They have heads in which a captive cry

Is merely the moving of a tongue.
Snow sparkles like eyesight falling to earth,

Like seeing fallen brightly away.
The leaves hop, scraping on the ground

It is deep January. The sky is hard.
The stalks are firmly rooted in ice.

It is in this solitude, a syllable,
Out of these gawky flitterings,

Intones its single emptiness,
The savagest hollow of winter-sound.

It is here, in this bad, that we reach
The last purity of the knowledge of good.

The crow looks rusty as he rises up.
Bright is the malice in his eye...

One joins him there for company,
But at a distance, in another tree.

CREDO
By Edward Arlington Robinson

I cannot find my way: there is no star
In all the shrouded heavens anywhere;
And there is not a whisper in the air
Of any living voice but one so far
That I can hear it only as a bar
Of lost, imperial music, played when fair
And angel fingers wove, and unaware,
Dead leaves to garlands where no roses are.

No, there is not a glimmer, nor a call,
For one that welcomes, welcomes when he fears,
The black and awful chaos of the night;
For through it all--above, beyond it all--
I know the far sent message of the years,
I feel the coming glory of the light.

Walking Asleep Green as I would have you be. Green wind. Green boughs. The boat on the sea And the horse on the mountain. With shadow around her waist She is dreaming at her railing, Green flesh, green hair, Eyes of frozen silver. Green as I would have you be. Under the gypsy moon, Things are watching her, Things she cannot see. Green as I would have you be. Great stars of hoar-frost Come with the shadowy fish That opens the road of dawn. The fig-tree rubs the wind On its abrasive boughs; The mountain, catamount, Thrusts out her sharpened thorns. Who's coming? By what road? She lingers at her railing, Green flesh, green hair, Dreams of the bitter sea.

There is not enough space to post all this so you can search to find the complete poem. You will see excerpts above and below but I think they got out of sequence.from "The Gypsy Ballads of Garcia Lorca" translated by Rolfe Humphries Indiana University Press, 1953

"Old man, I'd like to change My pony for your house, My saddle for your mirror, My dagger for your blanket. Old man, I come bleeding From Cabra's mountain passes." "If I could, my lad, We might strike a bargain, But I hardly know who I am, Nor is my house my own." "Old man, I'd like to die Decently in my bed Of steel, if that could be, Between the linen sheets. My wound,--or don't you see?-- Reaches from chest to throat." "Three hundred crimson roses Stain your shirt red; The blood smells and oozes Around the swathing bands. But I hardly know who I am, Nor is my house my own."

Rainer marie Rilke -from The First Elegy True, it is strange to inhabit the earth no longer,to use no longer customs scarcely acquired, not to interpret roses, and other things that promise so much, in terms of a human future; to be no longer all that one used to be in endlessly anxious hands, and to lay aside even one's proper name like a broken toy. Strange, not to go on wishing one's wishes. Strange to see all that once was relation so loosely fluttering hither and thither in space. And it's hard, being dead, and full of retrieving before one begins to espy a trace of eternity

.-Yes, but all of the living make the mistake of drawing too sharp distinctions. Angels, (they say) are often unable to tell whether they move among the living or dead. The eternal torrent whirls all the ages through either realm for ever, and sounds above their voices in both. translated by J.B. Leishman and Stephen Spender

"The Highwayman" by Noyes and "The Lady of Shalott" by Tennyson are my all-time faves. I really like the ones you posted here - especially that last one.

I think I liked the last one of these three the best but all very good poems. I think I will have to go back and look. I know the ones that can bring emotion to my heart are the ones I tend to favor
