ABOUT ME : Late babyboomer Canadian born in the beautiful Eastern Townships of Quebec, and raised in Northern Ontario. Fell in love with Ottawa where I received my B.A. with a major in french literature. Still living in Ottawa, I'm finding out that oncoming golden years offer a very rich perspective on life and beauty.

The themes of my poetry are found in everyday life. I write mostly free verse but I'm also a member of Haiku Canada and have had haiku published in various anthologies.

Please visit often my growing collection of poems and I hope you find many will resonate with you. I'd love to hear your comments.

By the way, my name is pronounced Lynn, and my avatar is an ink painting I created on rice paper years ago. The symbol means PLAY - something I have finally learned to do in later years and poetry is definitely my favorite form of play.

Haiku Poetry Meet Up

Blog Posted:4/14/2018 7:34:00 PM

I mentioned to a few fellow PSoupers that I was attending today, for the first time, a reunion of a local HAIKU POETRY group affiliated with the Canadian Haiku Organization. It was held at the Japanese Embassy in Ottawa. I was asked to provide feedback.

I encourage everyone to seek out ANY local poetry club, if, for no other reason than the pleasure of meeting other poets face to face.

As you may have guessed any Haiku Group is going to be much stricter… Let it be known that I am not crazy about limitations of any kind but perhaps I will learn to be OK with them as I plan on attending future reunions.

FYI, here is an informal list of "their" HAIKU GUIDELINES:

1. NO unnecessary capitalization,

2. NO title,

3. NO unnecessary punctuation at end of lines,

4. NO use of abstract concepts (must be concrete),

5. NO personification,

6. NO unnecessary adjectives or adverbs,

7. NO use of fantasy,

8. NO similes allowed,

9. NO explanation of haiku in last line,

10. NO heavy emotional words (should be felt not read),

11. MUST have a feeling of the present moment (NO past or future),

12. MUST be more than a description,

13. MAX 2 ideas (scenery + thought),

14 AND… they are not strict for the 5-7-5 syllable count – “haiku should be read in one breath” so there can be less syllables per line.

WHEW!! Knowing about the rules and obeying them are two different things. LOL

For a giggle, I will share a “haiku” that I wrote as I was waiting for the reunion to commence.

      one fluid motion

      soul and heart in unison

      ink on rice paper

I actually got to read it out loud near the end of the gathering, knowing full well it would get shredded – they were polite and said they loved the last line and it was worth working on.

End of my report. LOL

As an ardent lover and a passionate soul of poetry, I have been writing poems from the heart, mind and soul.. at the same time I try to embrace other forms that echo my inner voice without encaging the soul and flow of my ink.. I honestly haven't reached yet that state where poetry is my favourite from of play. Best regards. Besma

Dear Line, I actually do appreciate your endeavours to raise the voice of poetry above the world of normality.. But I am not of the opinion that we are supposed to conform our write to specific or minor rules related to given forms of poetry! I do believe that creativity, originality and breaking with rules to an extent are the lifeblood of poetry.. There is no absolute Truth! We can't speak of one Truth.. Each one of us has or own their very truth they do believe in.. All things considered, if from now and then, people put themselves responsible for a given form of poetry and set strict rules accordingly, we will end up penning in a suffocating and chained realm of poetry!

Yes, I see several areas where your comments on my poem Colony of One show it clearly violates some of the rules. I have been thinking about it for a while and ask you this. Do you think it is more appropriate to mark it as a Senryu? Would appreciate you advice if it isn't a incumberance. I'd like to keep the structure if I can versus going to a monoku.

Will do (look that article up). Just for the record, I do think the pure haikus, without the proper names and clever last line, are beautiful in and of themselves. So, I respect that. I simply don't wish to trip over well-worn conventions haphazardly. In the constriction of the haiku, I can see a simple beauty. Thanks again for your advice and commentary.

Far be it for me to meddle with your poetic creativity, Greg. I invite you to read this awesome article... http://www.shadowpoetry.com/resources/haiku/haiku.html

Yes I think in some ways the hai ku form can be a very restricting expression. I'd rather see you in a free verse any day of the week Line, but I certainly don't see anything wrong with that hai ku. it really brought out the emotions in me that you meant to invoke in your readers. A great piece!

Strict form haiku, let purists write them. I am a poet not a soldier hellbent on obeying rules. I write mine with heart, soul and emotion,- TO EXPRESS A THOUGHT, A FEELING,AN IDEA , A SCENE. OR TO ELICIT ANY OF THOSE FROM THE READER! I do not ask Japanese to change how they write theirs and I simply will not let others dictate how I write mine. A POET MUST FOLLOW HIS/HER HEART IS A STANDARD I LIVE BY.

Agreed, Robert. with all you U/C I can tell you are very offended at the thought of restricting creativity. The Japanese are very respectful of tradition. That's why haiku is just one form and there are many other forms.
Date: 4/17/2018 12:28:00 AM
I am not saying I am good at them either, by the way. I realize probably more than half of mine are not "real" haiku, by the standards mentioned above. Heck, maybe only 1/5 of mine are even close to being authentic haiku. I do feel that I KNOW a good one when I see one. I just wish I were inspired to be able to do a lot of good ones myself!! How fun you were able to go to that event. (oh, one last thing. I think titles for them are just FUN. How boring to have hundreds of untitled #1, untitled #2. How would you ever find a haiku you were looking for at Soup by that way? But of course, to publish in a good journal, you would not give a title to them!

I remember that lovely haiku you wrote, you know #115 - loved it !! LOL There are so many other short form options that get overlooked and don't seem to be as restricting.
Date: 4/17/2018 12:23:00 AM
What you said at the very end. That was so humorous, Line. I too liked the last line the best. The haiku thing has been a big issue here at Soup since I first came here 8 years ago. Several Soup members who were once active here have written numerous blogs explaining the things you have just explained. I don't know if you ever met Chris Aechner(probably spelled his last name wrong) but I really enjoyed his blogs because he supported the rules but took exception to the same ones I disagree with: numbers 4 and 5, particularly number 5. I recall he gave some good example of famous haiku writers who DO use personification. Love this blog. People at Soup will keep writing haiku the way they want.

Every haiku I've attempted in the past has been flawed. It seems to be the hardest form to do well ! I bow down to those who master this wonderful form of poetry!

Adhering to strict rules is a personal choice. It really depends what you want to do with your poetry and to what extent you want to use your poetic license.

This blog reminds me how little I used to know when I first joined Poetry Soup. As a child in grade school, we thought any three line poem with a 5/7/5 syllable count qualified as haiku poetry. And it is obvious to me that I kept that notion all the years that followed! At least I know more now, even if I struggle getting the form correct ! I may have to stick to free-verse, but it is fun trying !!

I accept that challenge to go and check out all your poems called haiku, Carrie. LOL Not to check against the rules list but to evaluate the creativity of each. Line xx
Date: 4/16/2018 6:24:00 PM
Yes! Haiku is not easy to write. I can't simply arrange a verse into three lines of 5/7/5 and call it haiku. That is something I have learned over my years of writing haiku. Thank you for sharing your club's guidelines. They are spot on. I truely hope that I and other haikuists here at poetry soup pay attention. BTW the only reason my haiku at PS are titled is because it is required here in order to post a poem.

Thank you so much for your input, Deborah. I love to title my haiku but from now on I want to try to have the haiku work without a title in case I would want to submit it in a contest. It's nice to have the rules to refer to for sure. When working a poem that won't work as a haiku... hey - choose another form!
Date: 4/16/2018 10:15:00 AM
What a nice experience for you, Line! I loved reading through the strict rules and learned a lot of what is expected! I surely must shred all the ones I've attempted! Thanks for sharing your nice adventure! Sandra

I enjoyed your blog and as a stickler for rules (only the ones I like mind you), it would be interesting to see what they do approve. I was taught with the 5-7-5 and am not fond of any other, but they are growing on me. A PS friend taught me a lot, Charles Henderson, a few years back. Am forever grateful for that. It's great you found that group!

Lol I also learned MUCH about the guidelines of haiku. Though personally I received the most helpful, and accurate, understanding from Chris A. on this site. There are no forms of poetry clubs of any kind anywhere near here that I've ever heard of. But maybe one day. Morning Line! Beautiful haiku!

Gosh Line you are brave! I recall watching a tv programme about a haiku club meeting in London, it was so intense and high brow .... to be honest I'd rather watch paint dry and just muddle along with my own attempts at haiku with titles. i have had several published with haiku journal so I must be getting the odd one correct.:-) hugs Jan xx

That is wonderful news, Jan. That could be why they don't have a wide following but the people were absolutely lovely. It was also a wonderful learning experience for me. Like most people, I have no intention of limiting my creativity so drastically.
Date: 4/14/2018 11:17:00 PM
Such a rule list would out me off writing Haiku, line- while I agree with the syntax and punctuation rules, the rest regarding concept and emotion almost strangle it before it is written, and I think it would emerge cold and static, like a Geisha. I like yours, by the way. A little freedom is no bad thing..... X

I absolutely feel the same way. This club meets only 4 times a year (a definite perk). I kind of get a kick out of their perverse self-inflicted restrictions and take a bit of pleasure in seeing them do this. A lovely group of masochists. What does this say about me?!
