My biography will be very limited for now.   Here , I can express myself in poetic form but in real life I much rather prefer to be far less forward  I am a 60 year old American citizen , born and raised in the glorious South! A heritage that I am very proud of and thank God for as it is a blessing indeed ~

Currently married to my beautiful young wife(Riza) a lovely filipina  lady and we have a fantastic 7 year old son, Justin ~

I have truly lived a very wild life as a younger man but now find myself finally very happily settled down for the duration of my life~

I decided to rest here and express myself with hopes that it may in some way help others, for I see here a very diverse  and fine gathering of poets, artists, and caring folks~

Of Modern Poetry
by Wallace Stevens

Of Modern Poetry Modern Poetry in the World War Eras
By 1942, when "Of Modern Poetry" was published, Modernism as a literary movement had evolved significantly from its roots in the 1910s. In Modernism's first years, World War I was an unavoidable influence on writers everywhere, even if indirectly. Industrialization and world war were the major factors that led poets like Stevens, Ezra Pound, T.S. Eliot, Gertrude Stein, and William Carlos Williams to vigorously break down and reinvent poetic standards that they saw as insufficient to make sense of the changing modern world. These poets responded to the war in their own ways, largely in that their aesthetics reflected a notion of a shattered or upended world order—"The Waste Land" of modernity, to use the title of Eliot's masterpiece.

World War I did generate a group of visceral war poets, primarily British, including Wilfred Owen, Siegfried Sassoon, and John McCrae, all of whom served in the war—a group who form something of their own canon apart from the overall Modernist greats. However, a degree of ambivalence prevailed among many major poets on how to address the war itself, if at all: William Butler Yeats, a precursor and paternal figure to many Modernists, offered his non-commentary bluntly in "On being asked for a War Poem," writing, "I think it better that in times like these / A poet's mouth be silent."

Between the wars, Modernist poetry grew and changed. The fiery, experimental poets established distinct careers as each pushed the genre in different, new directions: perhaps it is most accurate to say that Modernism was revealed to have never been one cohesive movement, but a diverse array of writers with vastly differing techniques. When Stevens published Parts of a World in 1942, he had the vantage point to look back on Modernism as a movement. The decades of distance from modern poetry's origins make it all the more striking that Stevens chose at that time to write a "Modern Poetry" manifesto, defining the genre and essentially issuing commandments for it.

In many ways, World War II forced Stevens' generation of poets to reflect anew on their past work, as they found themselves in a dire global situation similar to when they were starting to publish. In this context, it is impossible not to read "Of Modern Poetry" as Stevens' response, in his own intellectual way, to the horrors of World War II. 1942 was a particularly bleak moment in the war, especially for America: Pearl Harbor had just been bombed, launching the United States into the war, and Nazi Germany was reaching the height of its domination over Europe. This apocalyptic turmoil is contained within Stevens' simple line, "It has to think about war / And it has to find what will suffice," emphasizing poetry's vital duty to help people find meaning, solace, or "satisfaction"—anything that "will suffice" to keep life bearable. Though this context is not addressed directly by Stevens, it is invaluable in clarifying why he writes so adamantly here about the need for poetry to face the real world, reach people, bring them together, and give them happiness......................

Robert, I really enjoyed reading this - Thank you. I recently based one of my poems around the work of the poet Rupert Brooke and his famous sonnet: 'The Soldier.' Brooke had his critics just as he had his plaudits with some people calling his work naive and sentimental. Brooke addressed approaching WW1 by underpinning such poems as 'The Soldier' with idealistic hope and patriotism rather than gritty realism. He placed himself in the poem as a soldier considering his own death but doesn't appear to be horrified by the realities of war. Why? It just makes me wonder if, in this case, Brooke WAS truly scared and used his poetry as a form of defence mechanism and or a means of escape.

I am a huge fan of Rupert Brooke. I think it was that he was scared and the poem was his way of coping... Only an insane man would not be scared of war..and its death and destruction wrecked upon soldiers and innocent people too..Thank you for sharing your thoughts.

Robert,WS a master poet, indeed,my favourite of his the enigmatic 'Valley candle-'My candle burned alone in an immense valley./ Beams of the huge night converged upon it,/ Until the wind blew./ The beams of the huge night Converged upon its image,/ Until the wind blew.

Brian, I agree completely , a truly great poet. The Snow Man’ by Wallace Stevens The Snow Man One must have a mind of winter To regard the frost and the boughs Of the pine-trees crusted with snow; And have been cold a long time To behold the junipers shagged with ice, The spruces rough in the distant glitter Of the January sun; and not to think Of any misery in the sound of the wind, In the sound of a few leaves, Which is the sound of the land Full of the same wind That is blowing in the same bare place For the listener, who listens in the snow, And, nothing himself, beholds Nothing that is not there and the nothing that is.

I dont condemn it , I even write it myself. What I condemn are those poets that belittle and condemn dark poetry, sometimes to the point of declaring it not real poetry! As some here in the past have done. I have no problem with them writing only positive uplifting poems- I comment and praise those when they are good verse. But the ones that castigate poets writing realism(dark poetry) are the ones that are hypocrites, imho..

Nina the sad part is we have poets that do more than just frown at poets that write dark poetry, that tend to write using real life and realism. Some here definitely dislike that and have told me so in messages. I guess it is fine to be a member of the sugar brigade but as for me I know history of poetry very well and this broad acceptance of fluff , sugar poetry is an excuse not to write in-depth and truly meaningful poetry, imho.

Begs the question, should a poet write about realism, the dark savagery and horror in this ever tumultuous world? Not that every poet should but should it not be accepted as part of the soul of poetry-- realism of reality...//??
