About Andrea Dietrich

Bloggers Photo

Andrea Dietrich grew up in Iowa and now resides in Utah with a spouse and two cats. She has two grown children and six grandchildren. Having graduated BYU with a Spanish major/ESL minor, she has spent most of her adult life teaching. It wasn't until 2000 that she began writing in earnest and discovering her "niche" as a writer of lyrical poetry. The internet opened up a new world for her, and she has spent two decades now participating in poetry clubs, acting as a judge of poetry contests for various magazines, for the website Shadow Poetry, and for Poetry Soup.

Ms. Dietrich has won numerous awards, as well as the title Poet of the Year 2008, from the Yahoo group, Poetry For Thought. In addition, she has won prizes from the magazines Lucidity, Bell's Letters, Art with Words, Poets at Work and SP Quill, the magazine for which she wrote grammar and poetry articles as well as movie reviews and for which she acted as poetry editor for the head editor Marie Summers for six years. Many of her poems appeared in Shadows Ink, a yearly published series of chapbooks of award winning poetry as well as in numerous other anthologies. Her short stories appeared in many issues of SP Quill and much of her poetry was published in eight chapbooks (no longer sold online).

Since coming to Poetry Soup, Ms. Dietrich has been both contest sponsor and winner of numerous contests. In 2010, her poem "Cinder Girl" was first place winner of Soup's International contest (these contests are no longer held).  A song was created from her lyrics "Honeymoon Serenade" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WDWxc4cpHDc) and two movies have been made featuring the poetry of Andrea Dietrich: "A Tale of Fire and Ice" (a 4 min. Z-Film Fest Project, 2014) and the full length movie "Six Days of Sistine" in which 20 poems of Ms. Dietrichs serve as the thoughts of two characters played by Jamie Campbell Bower and Elarica Johnson (directed by Richard J. Perry, 2019) https://www.imdb.com/title/tt7710360/

Sad News on Dave Austin (with link to tribute page I just found out about)

Blog Posted:9/2/2017 8:07:00 PM

Dave Austin, known to friends here at Soup as Daver, passed away after being rushed to ER with stomach problems on June 3 of this year. I am only hearing of it today, and I was informed of this by friend Carolyn Devonshire, who used to call and talk to him every Saturday during football season. She told me they were both football fans, so she was in shock to call him today when HIS favorite team won, and it was today that Carolyn was informed by Daver's wife that Daver was deceased.

There is nothing we can do. At first I did not know about this page where you can pay tribute and offer your condolences. Here is the link to his Life Tributes page established by the family: http://http://www.wakemanfuneralhome.com/obituaries/David-Austin-9/.

This blog is just to inform everyone who knew him that he has left this world. He was (he IS) a dear soul He once was a musician in a symphony and  also had been a teacher. I know little else to say except that he was a very good poet and friend who lived 87 years and he is survived by his wife and son. I feel bad that I had not visited his poetry in over three months' time to realize that something must be very wrong. It was last year that I did a blog for him reporting to everyone that he was having health issues. He had wanted his friends to understand why he was not commenting. Then he had come back, but  as usual, life rushed past me and I did not stop to think, "Where is Daver?"  My condolences to Mrs. Austen, should she see this announcement.

Here is Daver's last poem posted at Soup. I recall he was growing very reflective in his past few years of life. This poem well portrays the type of poetry he was writing in his last days:

INNOCENCE

INNOCENCE

Once a child…
The thought elicits a slight warm smile
And I sit falling back for a while

Metamorphosis is gradual
Yet when clearing is realized -
what a strange revelization of self

With easy ignorant aspirations –
That so small self
Being molded shaped

Recognition is quick… but
Content?... Happy? … Angry?... Sad?
What makes me tick?

Mainly well at least partially
It must be expectations,,, expectations?
YES!

And all the developed conflicts surface
Flood my imagination… imagination?
YES!
Oh I was a dreamer
A prestidigitator
Of scenarios

With no thought of reality
(Reality contains an element of hope
Hope is universal) (Everyone knows that)

Coming – to
I shake my head
A head filled with chaos

I was a happy child
Now thanking God
For childhood innocence

Dave Austin

This PS Site I hardly frequent. But this rare visit saddens me greatly. As with many poet, writers on here, Daver was a massive lure to indulge and learn our writings, especially I an novice. My heart and thoughts go out to his family and friends xxx

This man was a lovely human being! My sincere condolences to his beloved family. I know his sweet cats will miss him too as he often expressed his love for cats to me. "David was an accomplished violinist. Prior to his retirement, he taught music at Arthur Hill High School and was the Concert Master of the Midland Symphony Orchestra." Many may not know of his musical talents and what a positive gift he he was to his grateful students. We here at PS knew him as a talented scholarly poet. I learned to become a better poet from his poetry. He was a close and dear friend and I will miss him very much. Aloha Daver. May we meet again in the hear after. Thank you for this Andrea. Blessings, Connie

It's a sad day for poetrysoup when one of their likeable poets pass on. He had a talent that can't be replaced. Thank you Daver for your words of encouragement when I first came here. May his widow find peace knowing he is at rest ....Seren

How sad, we are all getting older but as a friend once made me aware when she asked if I was afraid of death [I said no - I'm afraid of dying] she said you have been dying since the minute you were born so why start worrying now? Hats of to Daver he was a lovely man!

With great sadness, I remember Dave from my earliest days on Poetry Soup. From his gentle and kind comments, his character was reflected. From his beautiful poetry, we were soon aware that his heart and soul were rich with what mattered most. His worth, and our loss will forever remain evident.

Though I had little contact with Dave at Soup, we got to know each other well elsewhere. His talents in writing and the musical field brought us close and we commented/reciprocated pleasantly on our poetry and musical tastes. His absence from the scene will be felt deeply. May he rest in peace. My condolences go to all his family....paul

Thank you for sharing this news, Andrea. I did not now Daver well, but I know he had many friends here on Soup and I am sad to hear such a well-liked and gentle bloke has passed away, I feel, far too soon. Just recently, I said, that life is short... and Soup has been around for over a decade, I think (You'd know, Andrea!) so we will begin to lose more friends... this will be so very hard... Oh, Andrea, I found this... I can share it as a link, or maybe you could add this to the poem up above. Can't say why, but I think Daver would want us to read this one, too? https://www.poetrysoup.com/poem/autumn_at_hand_711325 Lovely poem, one to contemplate... take care one and all... Cyndi
