I reached retirement age a year ago, but still I like to teach and so I do, but three days now instead of four a week. I start at 9 and finish up by 2. I love my students, and I joke with them. My class most fun is an elective: Film, but first class of the day I love the most because our foreign students need it most. It’s grammar, and without it, other skills fall flat. I feel that it’s my strongest suit. Although my major happened to be Spanish, I felt inadequate, nor did I want to teach our teens so little motivated. One doesn’t get paid well in ESL, but students are adults who wish to learn. My personality goes great with teaching since I love words and knowing how they work. I get to be creative and tell stories to illustrate my point to students who appreciate me. From them I learn too! I came to poetry in my mid-40’s. I’d only written stories in my high school, I now use poetry to write about all sorts of things, by using classic forms in which the structure of a sentence matters. I love poetic elements such as alliteration, rhyme and metaphor. I’d never make a stunning free verse poet. Iambic beat came coursing through my veins, and led me to the way I write today,

I've been reading through your poems and found this one about teaching, and the pleasure you have in it. Playing with words is like the difference between swimming lessons and mucking around in the pool as kids. So glad your students have you, playing as well as teaching about words and grammar. J :)

There is a certain satisfaction in knowing that you have instilled a valuable skill in someone. Who knows, one day one of your students will write a poem about a teacher who had paved the way for them as a poet. Liked reading this, Andrea :)

Welcome to the club of retired or semi-retired ESL teachers. I'm fully retired now. Used to teach 16 hours ESL and another 16 of English 'Language Arts' in private high schools four days a week, (plus three-four hours of ESL in the evenings for half of the year). I loved it too. The pay, like you say, was lousy. But the job, at least for me, was paradise...

Thanks, Yann. Yes it is true. I kind of wish to be totally retired but I never had good benefits or pension like public school teachers get and my husband half his life was self employed. Thus our social security barely pays the bills and my part time working is nearly a necessity with my husband now disabled. Anyway. It would feel weird not to have a life outside of the house. It keeps me on my toes!

I was an ESL student when I came to USA. Teachers never taught any grammar or poetic skills. Mostly it used to stress in communication with general public. To be very frank, I did not know what syllabus, iambic parameters, etc., were before I joined this group. Thanks for volunteering to teach.

Gosh I wrote you a reply that seems to have vanished. It is cool you took ESL. Our school does teach a core integrated class in which speaking, listening, reading and writing are all incorporated. I just prefer teaching film class and grammar. As for poetry, my students hate it, but I've used nursery rhymes for low level students. I love teaching them the way English flows and the pronunciation of informal or fast speaking. I had to learn lots of things related to poetry myself by taking an online course in 2000.

After ten years of teaching, I would never dream of going back. Your style of poetry always shows talent. Alas, I often stick to free verse. Hugs.

a fabulous contest entry filled with biographical information about you. I came to writing late in life...63....taught English for most of my life but also taught 'resource English' for our special need students. Get this...I taught German to students who were native Spanish speakers who'd learned English after coming to America...Spanish is a romance language constructed differently from English/German. I knew very little Spanish...tricky stuff. Still purposeful. Anyway, enjoyed the read!

wow, you came to poetry later than I did, and I was not too early! Yes, Spanish is so different. Even now I feel awful when I am in a public restroom and I hear a bunch of Spanish speakers and I hardly have a clue what they are saying. I do much better with just one on one communication with a Spanish speaker.
