For all contest sponsors - AI detector sites to share

I am adding a blog for us to share AI detector websites/tools that you may use and want to share on PS.  I think this is needed since AI seems to be taking over poetry writing. In my opinion, AI written poems shouldn't place in contests. They are fake and not a true reflection of what poetry should be. It's a shame that some sites now offer AI poem generator tools. Poetry should be written from the heart, containing some sort of purpose or emotion from the writer. Not a computer- generated bunch of words that really have no purpose or meaning.

Grammarly.com is one site that I use. 

Please feel free to comment and share some AI detector sites you find helpful.

I truly despair of the site at the moment Tania, if poem after poem after poem after poem after poem after poem after poem after poem after poem after poem all test 100% AI and they are reported to admin still nothing gets done. Perhaps admin should also run a potential POTD through the checker as some are slipping through the net. If we take the time to check for AI and alert admin then surely something should be done, but sadly this is not the case and AI poems are still winning contests, some on an almost daily basis. Such a shame this is happening and nothing is done. thankfully some sponsors are becoming more aware of the frequent posters of poems that poets haven't written themselves

Scribbr for a quick check, but some people have become crafty ... Pity that people don't use their creativity to create poetry instead. :) My gut feelings regarding that "human intuitive interaction with the reader" is always lacking in AI-generated pieces, also it is clinically correct and linear. (All discussed in one of my earlier blogs.) A case of "if there is smoke, there is a fire". To keep myself objective, I would ask Grok 3 (a free program) to give me a report highlighting AI markers and the human fingerprints present. Its conclusion has at times refuted my suspicions, but at other times put into words what it was that had flagged a poem for me. No, humanising a poem doesn't fool it. A bit like a picture of someone in a church - but .. he has 6 fingers on one hand...

The verdict is that there is no quick fix for sponsors. If we want to beat AI, we need to become better poets than it, i.e. know our forms and what makes for genuinely good poetry. Using Grok 3, Microsoft Copilot, etc (all free programs) to give you feedback regarding AI fingerprints and Human elements in the test poems, will help you to compile a list (as I have done) to help you in identifying AI junk. Initially it will take time to train ourselves, but well worth it. A telltale signs for me is when I "audit" contest entries after it was finalised and compared some to their earlier poems - totally different poetic voices! I will keep on running contests where the prompts and/or poetic forms defy AI imitation. Good luck, guys - we got this. :)

The real question for me, Tania, is whether I must check every poem submitted for my contest entries, or flag past transgressors (since Feb 2023: when ChatGPT hit the scene)? Also, as mentioned before, AI Checkers are failing to perform as we think they should. In the end, it is our own eyes and experience that guide us. Like DD said, generate a few AI poems to train yourself to identify AI. For those who don't know how, check out the AI-generated poem in my last blog, Suzette Swan Arc - Contest Finale. See whether you can spot all the telltale signs (besides not being fragmented, etc). The latest AI programmes can produce poems with "feeling", so this is no longer a red flag. And so the AI poets also read the blogs and adjust their poems (something I have noticed). So, the less said, the better.

Yes, it might be worth spot checking POTD on occasion too (no further comment). I only check the short list of winners rather than every entry. https://gptzero.me/ https://www.scribbr.co.uk/ai-detector/ https://copyleaks.com/ai-content-detector Another useful thing is to paste the contest rules in to AI and generate 3 sample poems, the blueprint can be pretty obvious for those using off the shelf poems. And helps you detect AI that the checkers miss. I use the free version of ChatGPT for this.

If you copy and paste the contest rules into something like Chatgpt (or maybe Grok3 if you don't want to sign up) and ask if to produce a poem for the contest. You'll often see that what it produces matches around 3 entries. Not word for word but as a formula/blueprint where different words are used but the pattern and presentation is the same. It was interesting for Sara's fairy tale one as human poets tended to pick a single fairy tale yet the AI entries I saw were making puns on each fairy tale within a very similar narrative i.e. contrasting with a modern thing like WiFi or podcasts etc. just interchangeable details within almost the same poem format.
