"Glass is Empty" is my avatar.  It reflects a play on words with my initials, as "Empty" becomes "MT" for my name.  The glass represents my transparently fragile creative process.  The glass begins to fill as I struggle through the process of writing, becoming full when I (finally!) complete a short story or poem.  After publishing the work, the glass becomes empty again, awaiting new inspiration.  Empty or full, the glass is always "MT" :)

Blog Posted:5/10/2019 11:35:00 AM

I just read this very interesting article written by Es Devin, artist and designer and published in Google's blog "The Key Word,"  who collaborated with Google Arts & Culture Lab and Ross Goodwin to create POEMPORTRAITS:

"Create a personalized poem, with the help of A.I.

POEMPORTRAITS is an online collective artwork, experimenting at the boundaries of AI and human collaboration—a combination of poetry, design and machine learning. A POEMPORTRAIT is your self portrait overlaid with a unique poem, created by AI. Starting today, you can create your own and contribute to the evolving, collective poem.

To create your POEMPORTAIT, head to g.co/poemportraits. Once you get there, you’ll be asked to donate a word of your choice and take a self portrait. Each word you donate will be expanded into original lines of poetry by an algorithm that’s trained on millions of words of nineteenth century poetry. You’ll then receive a unique POEMPORTRAIT of your face, illuminated by your original lines of poetry. All of the lines of poetry are then combined to form an ever-evolving, collective poem.

To create the technology behind POEMPORTRAITS, I collaborated with Google Arts & Culture Lab and Ross Goodwin. Ross trained an algorithm to learn to write poems by reading over 25 million words written by 19th century poets. It works a bit like predictive text: it doesn’t copy or rework existing phrases, but uses its training material to build a complex statistical model. As a result, the algorithm generates original phrases emulating the style of what it’s been trained on.

The resulting poems can be surprisingly poignant, and at other times nonsensical. And it’s the profoundly human way that we seek and find personal resonance in machine-generated text that’s the essence of this project. I was inspired by the writing of Shoshana Zuboff on the “information civilization”—she writes, “If the digital future is to be our home then it is we who must make it so.”

Here’s my POEMPORTRAIT; the word I chose to donate was “convergence.”

Create your unique POEMPORTRAIT and become part of this ever-growing global poem at g.co/poemportraits."

Well, that's the end of the article.  I found it interesting, and maybe you will too!

Just to reiterate, I was not taking one side or the other: "MUCH of poetry is a result of experience and emotive input, and that would leave AI in a very dry sort of conundrum when it comes to substantive writing - writing that truly affects the reader, (and that's what we're all saying here, I think), but that DOESN'T mean there can't be some kind of creative result from an algorithm. Would we like it? Does it compare? I doubt it." Great discussion, folks, and wonderful blog, Mark! :-D

Thank you, Greg! That's pretty much how I feel too. It's interesting to note that when I accessed the project's website so I could read the "ever-evolving collective poem," approximately 80% (4 out of 5 entries) of the AI generated poetry was nonsensical.

3) I see this as being about identity, and how we perceive ourselves as individuals in an environment where technology mass produces to the point where machines are being used to replace humans. It is a way of making loss of "doing" and the loss of identity that goes with it, replaceable with a substitute that could dull the senses. The first thing a human being recognizes is a face, and a voice. Very clever marketing to make inhuman AI more acceptable.

Aqua Marine, your comments are well-thought-out and compelling. Thank you for enhancing the scope of our discussion.

2) Greg Barden has an open minded response, which is not reactive in nature, I appreciate that. Technology has brought many benefits to humankind- no doubt about that. It is an intriguing subject. But this seems to have a gimmick quality to it, no matter how intellectual its programming has been. It is the human mind that is limitless in it's imagination. The digital world is an offshoot of that imagination. It is not the imagination itself. This programme was produced with all the ambiguity and imagination of countless poets...What would it have produced without that? A casino hooks a gambler in with a promise of getting more out than you spend. Who really scores the most in the long run?

This way of creating poetry seems more like a "game," of chance, then using individual imagination to create an art form. The use of a self portrait and one word that comes to mind, to create a poetic phrase that now gives you "extra" identity, (after all, it has used your face to interface with a word chosen from your mind...) seems to fit in with the hollow values that certain individuals with "superior thinking" are intent on impressing on the masses. Your poetic identity is now the luck of the draw.... Just imagine what a drug it could become. Wasting the value of artistic integrity on "one arm bandit" highs that draw one into a "let's see what it will give me next....fast, cheap fun.

Lawrence, we're glad you picked up your pen and wrote your new poem "God Technologies Inc." It's a very thought-provoking response to the topic of AI. ~Mark

A machine can not extend from its heart and soul to reach out and touch others. Poetry is about that. A machine has no heart and soul-- thus there would be no human element present in anything it spat out. I could myself go cherry pick verse, or parts of verses and then out them together with enough -- thus make a poem. I read a poem , I am joining in with the poet to see, hear, touch, feel, imagines what he or she saw, heard, felt, touched, imagined. No such bond could be with a machine.

You are right Robert, BUT... judging by some of the feedback below, it sounds like they've made the AI smart enough to fake it quite convincingly. Very troubling.

Robert, your comment clearly expresses the difference between man and machine when it comes to poetry. Thank you for that.

Thank you all for your candid response to this interesting topic. Even the writer of the article, artist Es Devin states: “The resulting poems can be surprisingly poignant, and at other times nonsensical.” She continues: “I was inspired by the writing of Shoshana Zuboff on the “information civilization”—she writes, “‘If the digital future is to be our home then it is we who must make it so.’”

(4) Imagination is our greatest tool, in my humble opinion, it keeps us young and our ideas fresh, and I think we may be at least expanding our personal horizons by being open-minded about such things, and seeing where it goes. As I say, I find the discussion and elements fascinating, and I'm going to dig a bit more. Cool stuff! :-)

I really appreciate your input, Greg - your response made a lot of sense, and was very balanced in analysis. As an artist, I appreciate modern forms of artistic expression, like installation art. And we need to explore the worthiness of new concept art - Making recycled works of art from recycled rubbish is fascinating! And there are poems created by poets who take random words from a page in a novel. You are both reasonable, and firm in your opinion on this subject - I value that highly! (((HUGS)))

Greg, thanks for the thought-provoking response. This project is more than the run-of-the-mill poem generator. It’s a worldwide collaborative effort to seriously apply AI to the world of poetry, and, in the words of the author, “it’s the profoundly human way that we seek and find personal resonance in machine-generated text that’s the essence of this project.” Cool stuff indeed!

(3) Here's the OTHER side for me: MUCH of poetry is a result of experience and emotive input, and that would leave AI in a very dry sort of conundrum when it comes to substantive writing - writing that truly affects the reader, (and that's what we're all saying here, I think), but that DOESN'T mean there can't be some kind of creative result from an algorithm. Would we like it? Does it compare? I doubt it. But I personally would be interested to see, and I find the discussion fascinating! To each his/her own, but human beings CREATE these algorithms and the AI itself, so by extension, isn't that just a different, more convoluted version of the same process?? (continued)

(2) The definition of creativity is "to bring into existence", and there are no qualifications for HOW that comes about. The 1st definition of poetry is "metrical writing". The 2nd, (and the one that comes closer for me), is: "writing that formulates a concentrated imaginative awareness of experience in language chosen and arranged to create a specific emotional response through meaning, sound, and rhythm", and AI is certainly capable in that respect. I'm really arguing with myself here, but the more I DO, the more I feel that we MAY be wrong and a bit short-sighted to say that creative energy can't be produced in non-human ways. (continued)

(1) Here's the thing for me, (and many of you know what an odd duck I am, lol) ... sometimes I work very hard on poems, (too hard on some), and other times, (and these are the rare times that make the hairs stand), something OTHER than myself is in control, cuz it just flows and the results astound me - call it God or The Creative Conscience or even kismet, whatever "it" is, it is beyond me, and I am just along for the ride. While I agree with most of the negative sentiment here, who am I to say that artificial intelligence can't be used by that same abstraction for creativity?? Who's to say that WE aren't using similar type algorithms, but ours just biologically seeded?? (continued)

I don't even want to try this. It takes away from poetry's meaning for me. the example "sounds" pretty, but the result is like other weird modern poetry that makes no sense to me even when written by mere mortals.

Interesting in a sci-fi sort of way, but once you add A.I. to poetry it diminishes it imho. Poetry and literature are uniquely human

SOS, I agree 100%. I couldn’t care less about the multitude of poem generators out there. What caught my interest here is that this is a collaborative project created by an installation artist and Google AI. All of the poems generated worldwide are being captured as one continuous submission, which can be read simultaneously by all who participate. An AI art installation of poetry :)

I donated the word "secrets." The AI gave me "The secrets of the sea, which have no desire ~ Our love so soft, the soul."

Oh everyone needs to try this! I “donated” the word harmony... the AI gave me “That harmony of the sea stretches into the sunset / The fire of some fair forest, all the sea.” Actually not bad!
