Notes About The Poem

Writer's Block

Up the creek without a paddle?
Writer's block causing distress?
Get back up on the saddle
Ride the stream of consciousness!

Stream of consciousness is a literary style in which a writer’s thoughts, feelings, and reactions are depicted in a continuous flow uninterrupted by objective description or conventional dialogue. Even though the result may not always be worthy of publishing, the process can be an effective means to break through writer’s block, yielding fresh ideas that can be developed at a later time.

You're welcome, Bill. Sometimes it works well, sometimes it works less well. Whatever it takes to ignite our muse. Take care.

Thank you, Andrea. You’re welcome for your September win, but it means a lot to all of us, too. I didn’t realize until after Mile 7 was finalized that September had over 11,000 views and 8 pages of comments! Kudos to you!

This is good advice, Mark. I never really worry too much about "writer's block". If I can't think of anything new to write about, I just revisit some of my old stuff and try to give it a renovation. And I enjoy reading "stream of consciousness", but I've never felt inclined to jump into that stream, myself.

Good quatrain, Mark. I have tried my hand at stream of consciousness on a number of occasions and have found it to be beneficial.

Thank you, Milton. Sometimes stream-of-consciousness writing can provide the spark needed to jump-start our muse.
