Notes About The Poem

This was inspired by the birthday of Dr. Suess, which was March 2nd-

Morris the Thesaurus Tortoise

Ocie the Ocelot liked words a lot!
As a tot, words like dot and trot hit the spot
Then, getting older, the folder on her shoulder grew bolder
What was once handy stopped ringing so dandy
Craving vocabulary candy to bandy
She sought what she ought, to form lukewarm to hot

Mooshu, the emu guru, knew what to do
To bring notice and gain focus
Journey there, to the oracle's lair
The fortress of Morris the Thesaurus Tortoise

When she approached his door, saying, "I want more!"
His smile creased - he replied, "Your covet's increased!"

She confessed her distress at being a pest
But he said, "My dear, you're not stubborn - you're tenacious!
You're not merely aware - you're perspicacious!"

It's not only knowledge; it's proficiency, cognition, discernment
For ideas, impressions, concepts, brainstorming segments
Be bold, audacious, intrepid, resolute, gallant
Credit your capacity, flair, savvy, talent
Evade the cliche, the commonplace, the trite
Clamp on, lacerate, masticate, bite!

Hours freed, for her need to succeed
Then, at the end, one final creed to heed-
Don't fall a slave to the misbehaving knave
Sometimes, the simpler speech is the one to save.

Michelle, your fanciful foray into the mind of Dr Seuss was a winsome wealth of wordplay wizardry and a pure personification pearl! I love picturing how much fun you had writing this, and was so pleased to see you receive POTD honors for it last year! I do love my thesaurus (and rhyming dictionary) but will attempt to pay heed to your final creed! A wink and a smile, my poetry friend ~ John

A wonderful tribute to Dr. Seuss's unique talent for relating to children in his witty writing style, Michelle. Thanks for the example. I've no children, but loved Seuss's "Lorax." Best wishes, Carolyn

How did I miss this yesterday? Oh, that's right. I was not on the site yesterday until 10:30 p.m. and then I was exhausted. This is indeed POTD! Love it! Great job, my friend. You have wowed Seuss himself most probably!

Cute one. The tools of a poet's gift do come in handy when it comes to writing poems nothing like searching for just the right word using rhyme zone or the thesaurus. Sara

Michelle, congratulations on POTD and your poem is great and clever and a wonderful example for your contest, I am not that familiar with Seuss style of writing as I have no kids to read Seuss to, lol, but I will give your contest a whirl anyways.

As I read the first stanza, I just knew it. This absolutely had to be POTD, and I was going to burn down the World Trade Center if it hadn't been named POTD, and so now I won't have to do that and I can go back to reading the rest of the poem--whew! How about that for a rant of a comment! CONGRATS ON POTD! :) gw
