About Andrea Dietrich

Andrea Dietrich grew up in Iowa and now resides in Utah with a spouse and two cats. She has two grown children and six grandchildren. Having graduated BYU with a Spanish major/ESL minor, she has spent most of her adult life teaching. It wasn't until 2000 that she began writing in earnest and discovering her "niche" as a writer of lyrical poetry. The internet opened up a new world for her, and she has spent two decades now participating in poetry clubs, acting as a judge of poetry contests for various magazines, for the website Shadow Poetry, and for Poetry Soup.

Ms. Dietrich has won numerous awards, as well as the title Poet of the Year 2008, from the Yahoo group, Poetry For Thought. In addition, she has won prizes from the magazines Lucidity, Bell's Letters, Art with Words, Poets at Work and SP Quill, the magazine for which she wrote grammar and poetry articles as well as movie reviews and for which she acted as poetry editor for the head editor Marie Summers for six years. Many of her poems appeared in Shadows Ink, a yearly published series of chapbooks of award winning poetry as well as in numerous other anthologies. Her short stories appeared in many issues of SP Quill and much of her poetry was published in eight chapbooks (no longer sold online).

Since coming to Poetry Soup, Ms. Dietrich has been both contest sponsor and winner of numerous contests. In 2010, her poem "Cinder Girl" was first place winner of Soup's International contest (these contests are no longer held).  A song was created from her lyrics "Honeymoon Serenade" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WDWxc4cpHDc) and two movies have been made featuring the poetry of Andrea Dietrich: "A Tale of Fire and Ice" (a 4 min. Z-Film Fest Project, 2014) and the full length movie "Six Days of Sistine" in which 20 poems of Ms. Dietrichs serve as the thoughts of two characters played by Jamie Campbell Bower and Elarica Johnson (directed by Richard J. Perry, 2019) https://www.imdb.com/title/tt7710360/

In Memorial: Beloved Soup poets Who Have Passed Away

Blog Posted:5/28/2023 11:03:00 AM

:I realize this list is VERY incomplete. In fact, as I was searching for names of poets we had lost here, I was only able to use my past blogs and the list of my own followed poets that I was chums with to come up with these names. If a person had not posted in over a year, I tried to find clues that the person was still alive. For example, I knew that many of them had simply left Soup because I see them still at Facebook but others have notes under their most recent poems in which their friends are wishing them peace in heaven. However, there are many who abruptly stopped writing here in the past ten to fifteen years and I honestly cannot know if they are still alive or not. I apologize if I somehow was left unaware of the death of any of your own beloved poetry friends.  Please will you add names in the comments below so that i can add the dearly departed to my Memorial of Poetry Soup's deceased poets.

Here is my short list of the poets I know for sure are no longer with us. A few of them died many years ago and are probably not known to the poets here today, so i will put them at the bottom of the list. To th best of my recollection, I will show the most recently deceased first. but I am unsure of the exact order.

This Memorial Day, please remember these special poets who made PoetrySoup such a wonderful place to be:

.1. Harry Horsman

2.  L Milton Hankins

3. Rico Laffanta

4  Connie Marcum Wong

5. Winged Warrior

6. Matthew Amish

6. Carolyn Devonshire

7. Kieth Bickerstaffe
8. Geoffrey Brewer

9. Daver Austin

10. Lucilla Carillo

11. Tim Ryerson

12. Linda=Marie Sweetheart

Add ons mentioned by commenters below:

13. Cheryl Dunn from 2016

14. Chan Hurst (AKA Just that Archaic Poet)

15. Peter Duggan

16. Judith Angell Meyer

17. Don Johnson

18. Dan Kearley

19. John Heck

20. John Rhinem

(possibly Susan Gentry and Joyce Johnson, who was our "cowboy" poet and was at least 104 years old the last I knew.. If anyone has info to the contrary on these last two, please let me know).

(Anybody else have more names for me? I hope to take time to visit the add-on poets. I am sure I had known the work of most of them.)

Hi, Andrea! I just saw a post on facebook by Ralph Taylor's daughter. Apparently he passed away in March of 2022.

What a touching tribute, Andrea. Thank you for doing this. We hate losing contact and not knowing. I have fond memories of thoughtful exchanges with many of these poets.

Hi Andrea, thank you so much for the time you put in to compile this list and making sure it's accurate. There may be many who we will never know about, unless they prepare in advance for the information to be passed along to the Soup community. I read your list on Memorial Day and had a personal moment of silence and gratitude for each of these souls. Thank you ~ John

Yes, I added the two johns on. Because I was bullied by the one in prison, I am not interested about him, but if anyone knows if he passed away and would like me to add his name, I'll do it.

The great, prolific poet, Freddie Robinson, Jr. vanished and has been gone a while. Does anyone have any info on him? Thanks.

Andrea A very good write to honour their memories! Milton was a wonderful person who was very active who responded and interacted a lot with other soupers! I miss him as I miss Carolyn and Connie Wong who are amongst the most recent who passed! We should ask the admin to put their date of passing on their pages with perhaps a rose to indicate they are no longer in this world. Also may I suggest to the PS team that all the poets who are here should be given the option to have their poetry published if they pass. This may mean giving consent when we are still here!

I am hoping the PS team reads the blogs! We should have a system in place to publish works of poets who are no more! Also a Tribute on their poetry page.

by the way, I love the rose idea, but I do not know how Soup could do it fairly without having solid proof of who died and when. In other words, only poets who were super active here would be getting recognized and many others would pass on with us never knowing. Wish there were a way for Soup to know for sure about poets who have passed away.

This is so sad to read the names of poets we know who have passed before us. Thanks, Andrea for honoring their memories with this blog. May they Rest in Peace until we meet again. SuZ

Yes the Kookabuzz Challenges produced a lot of amazing poems. The time limit of 15 minutes and the word list really got the imagination firing. My memory is getting so sketchy sometimes so can’t really say I remember who you are trying to recall.

Dale I only knew from his challenges at Kookamonga. Many of my really good poems were due to his challenges all those years ago. I remember them well and YOUR amazing entries. There was a woman I think native american, her name started with an S. Do you know who I am talking about? And a guy who died right before I joined in 2003. I hear he was amazing.

Even sadder ,I know there are others too. Remember Connie's poetry group? At least five good souls passed away within Connie's group. I will never forget Mary Por,t (Porter?) Had you known her? I can't think of the others' names. I never knew them as well as Mary.

Joyce Johnson I believe passed away Andrea... and one other who was a gifted Poet was John Heck. I believe he has left us also.

Andrea, oh so sad, there are names on your list of poets I did not realize had passed, my heart is broken today ! Thank you for doing this list of memory. I even still have some of these people on Facebook as friends and there they will stay, are these poets poems still here on PS, I must check !

Thank you, Andrea! Hearts are touched! A nice idea to remember them during Memorial Day weekend. God bless all those who have died for us as well, in wartime. More so, bless all the poets here at PS. Many bare their souls, give us a glimpse of who they are and what they have experienced.

You are welcome. I just think it's nice to take a moment and remember those who have passed on. I am really surprised that I can't seem to locate the poetry pages of Matthew Amish. I hope Soup does not remove the pages, and if they don't , it means someone Matt knew took all his poetry down . What a shame.
