FALL ANIMAL HAIKU CHALLENGE - Andrea Dietrich's Blog

About Andrea Dietrich
(Show Details...)
Bloggers Photo

Andrea Dietrich grew up in Iowa and now resides in Utah with a spouse and two cats. She has two grown children and six grandchildren. Having graduated BYU with a Spanish major/ESL minor, she has spent most of her adult life teaching. It wasn't until 2000 that she began writing in earnest and discovering her "niche" as a writer of lyrical poetry. The internet opened up a new world for her, and she has spent two decades now participating in poetry clubs, acting as a judge of poetry contests for various magazines, for the website Shadow Poetry, and for Poetry Soup.

Ms. Dietrich has won numerous awards, as well as the title Poet of the Year 2008, from the Yahoo group, Poetry For Thought. In addition, she has won prizes from the magazines Lucidity, Bell's Letters, Art with Words, Poets at Work and SP Quill, the magazine for which she wrote grammar and poetry articles as well as movie reviews and for which she acted as poetry editor for the head editor Marie Summers for six years. Many of her poems appeared in Shadows Ink, a yearly published series of chapbooks of award winning poetry as well as in numerous other anthologies. Her short stories appeared in many issues of SP Quill and much of her poetry was published in eight chapbooks (no longer sold online).

Since coming to Poetry Soup, Ms. Dietrich has been both contest sponsor and winner of numerous contests. In 2010, her poem "Cinder Girl" was first place winner of Soup's International contest (these contests are no longer held).  A song was created from her lyrics "Honeymoon Serenade" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WDWxc4cpHDc) and two movies have been made featuring the poetry of Andrea Dietrich: "A Tale of Fire and Ice" (a 4 min. Z-Film Fest Project, 2014) and the full length movie "Six Days of Sistine" in which 20 poems of Ms. Dietrichs serve as the thoughts of two characters played by Jamie Campbell Bower and Elarica Johnson (directed by Richard J. Perry, 2019) https://www.imdb.com/title/tt7710360/

FALL ANIMAL HAIKU CHALLENGE

Blog Posted:9/26/2010 7:08:00 PM

Since haiku is often about capturing a moment from nature and stating it simply and concretely, I want for you to write me a haiku (either with the traditional syllable count or the shorter more contemporary way which I prefer) and include an animal, which is the specific focus. Think of some animal that you would likely see in the fall. Put that animal into the haiku and make an ordinary moment into something special. Make us realize the season is fall. This can be achieved by using KIJO (but is not necessary) I just want to understand from your haiku that it‘s fall. Kijo refers to the use of a seasonal word inside your haiku. If you use it, don’t be redundant (using two seasonal words). Your description of the animal itself can make us aware you are in the season of fall. You also can try for juxtaposition between the two parts of your haiku.

The two parts of a haiku are these: a fragment (on line one or three) and a phrase, called the body. The body usually begins in the middle and involves subject and action (in two lines). Don’t be flowery, using poetic devices such as metaphor, simile or personification. That is not haiku’s intent. Just focus on a specific thing and make it unique! Below is the address for a website I used to research a little more about haiku. It is an article that was written by a fine haiku writer named Kathy Lippard Cobb. I recommend your reading this article because if you read it and produce a haiku using the ideas the author presents in her article, you will grow as a haiku poet and also I will be more likely to give you a win! Keep this in mind too. Capitalization of first words in a line and the use of comma are not standard practice for haiku!

Finally, please do not put your name on your haiku. Again, I am judging blind! Good luck, guys!

Chris, I think I mention all the stuff you are saying between this blog and my contest rules on the main page! Emilia, that is the good of challenges, They REALLY inspire you to increase your writing. Since I began doing challenges 8 years ago, it has helped me produced so much more than I could ever have imagined. Good luck! Luv, Andrea

Thank you Andrea for all the information you shared with us about haiku. I always love to learn more and more about writing. I'm thinking of giving it a try on this interesting contest you host:) I usually don't write poems specially for a contest, most of the times I just submit a poem that I already wrote that fits the contest, but your idea is quite interesting!

oh, and I agree, personally I kind of like seeing metaphors and personification inside the traditional haiku, but if I get a lot of haiku like the examples I showed on my other blog, those will be the front runners!

WEll, I am glad I came back here, Chris. AT the area where the contest is posted, I distinctly said I preferred NOT 5/7/5. I will reiterate that now inside this blog! Sorry, Nikko, it completely slipped my mind that you don't have my kind of fall. WEll, then you will have to do fall as YOU know it where you live! that should be interesting (unless you want to just study examples of how fall is in most parts of the US) LUv, Andrea
