2023 Strongest Earthquake Jolts my Home, Affecting more than Half of my Island's 200k+ Souls - Hilo Poet's Blog

At Valentine's twilight of 9:27 pm HST, a category VI earthquake [described as Strong Shaking and Light Damages] shook my townhouse, affecting the East and South East of the island, which is the most densely populated.

My home is situated in the town of Hilo within view of the bayfront as pictured above on my blog, sitting on the left side. Fortunately, no fatalities were reported, but there were some minor casualties.

Due to nature's frequency, State officials initiated an active line between the vulnerable and Civil Defense. I've received notices from the Hawaii Tsunami Warning Center, stating no offshore buoys showed unusual movements, but Hawaii Volcano Observatory is watching for possible activity in the Kilauea Caldera. Its activity will boost tourism with memorable take-homes.

I'll be leaving later this morning for my family's uphill home, above the town, as a precautionary measure. Earthquakes, in and of themselves, generate waves that are capable of reaching my townhouse. Tsunamis come from underwater earthquakes and their turbulence claims many expert swimmers--they are considered as nonsurvivable. Land quakes near the sea are called Strike-Slips that abruptly push the sea ashore, and depending on the topography, can flood low-lying coastal areas for more than a mile inland.
