Funny old language, innit?

Greetings, fellow wordsmiths,

In a comment on one of my recent efforts, Andrea Dietrich pointed out a difference in pronunciation

on a particular word which, to her ear, would have crashed a rhyme out.

In this instance, being a Midlands lad, 'tongue' rhymes with long', whereas to Andrea, I assume it rhymes with 'lung'.

Which got me thinking, and I thunk that not only can Poetry suffer when passed around the globe,

but here in England one can run into trouble on a regional basis, for example-

Here in Derby, a small cake with cream and jam is a scone, which rhymes with 'gone'.

Move South, and it rhymes with 'tone'.

In the Midlands, tooth rhymes with 'sleuth', but way up North in Tyneside, it rhymes with

'scruff'.

If I take a bath, it rhymes with 'chaff', whereas the more well-heeled (or the cast of 'Downton Abbey')

make it rhyme with 'Darth'.

My late mother, being a Dublin lass, made a vase rhyme with 'ways', whereas we rhyme it with 'cars'.

It would be interesting if to know if there are any such instances in any other countries you can come up with.

On a final note, it's a good job I don't post verse in the Derbyshire dialect- with lines such as

goindan't rowad (going down the road)

anthee anowl (and you as well)

ee by eck (well, I never), and

athagonnabrewupthen (are you making a cup of tea for me, please).

isn't the English language a wonderful thing, Afolabi? Still, I'm not complaining- the Eskimos have fifty different words for 'snow'.Regards, Viv

I didn't realize I was suppose to talk here. My first blog, my bad. I added comments under other peoples. I will say here: In my opinion, we can't educate the whole world about actual dialogues, but we can create an awareness of the differences in speech so everyone will better appreciate someone's poem. Thanks to Mark Woods, I know that I try to remember to consider it when I comment.

Ayup, CayCay, I must admit I have become more tolerant since joining this site, especially with some of the differences in transatlantic spellings- It all boils down to what one is trying to say, rather than how they say it. Variety, as they say, is the spice of life. Viv x

it's all pretty wild how the differences can get so different! Makes me wonder how to ever judge a contest based on pure rhyme! Yes, for me, it's tongue with lung!

And to complicate matters, Andrea, to the upper class folk over here, 'sex' is what you carry coal in. And in Rome, 'specimen' is an Italian Astronaut :). Viv x

Good blog, the kiwi accent (NZ) is an interesting one and I have had it pointed out on a few occasions that my poems lose a bit in the translation. Apparently when we say fish it sounds like "fush" and chips sounds like "chups". I'm also told that our six sounds like a carnal act. Route to me rhymes with boot but to Americans I believe route goes with out. Hell just about nightmarish to think a rhymer may be actually writing in partial free verse. ; )

Now I'm confused when CayCay says Andrea has won rhyme with one and to her won rhymes with sun. All three rhyme together for me (won,one, sun). Tomato sauce is put on fush and chups. Fries are how men cook when their wife is away and cholesterol doesn't matter temporarily.

This box goes below my other box. It's a box thing. Text wouldn't all fit .. it left out.. One contest that really emphasized (pardon the pun) the difference was the punctuation contest. I learned that many countries have 'full stops' and 'period' made no sense. If were told to make a full stop, I would immediately think of driving. After reading Mark above, there's a chance that I wouldn't understand a word he said in person!

I'm route with out. Andrea is in northern, USA, and I was raised by southerners. She and I recently realized that to her 'won' rhymes with one, and to me, not at all. To me, won rhymes with sun. She probably says "Aunt" rhymes with 'flaunt" and I'm "Aunt" rhymes with 'pant.' I'm 'vase' with 'days' and she is probably 'vase' with 'gloss.' Mark Woods, hey Mark, and I first corresponded because something in his pirate poem didn't rhyme at all in the U.S.

Don't panic, Mark- in Northern Ireland and Scotland, it's 'fash 'n chaps'. But in America, chips are crisps. Oh my God- what have I started? Regards, Viv

I would encourage yo to post a poem in your local dialect.I did so a while back with A Buckinghamshire Boy..in the local dialect of the vale where I grew up and that I remembered from the 1940's.It received a good press when the local paper published on their letters page and I did a oral version thereof which can be heard on YouTube where I post most of my PS anthology.Give it ago for posterity'sake.regards Brian

One other point Viv on this topic,one that sometimes causes,a ripple or two here is the fact that of syllabic pronunciation in different parts of the English speaking world varies.To me it is not a problem as poetry is a oral art and so syllabic variations are an academic point in written forms that specify some syllabic arrangement and is not 'worth the candle' of a disagreement.regds Brian

Yes, Brian, I've sometimes tussled with getting away with 'flower' as one syllable, as I tend to be a little relaxed when saying the word, similar to 'flour' without the stress on the 'w'. But I thought I'd get pulled up on it, so rescripted around it. Oop North it is strongly duo syllabic. Viv

Ay up me duck - as you know I lived in Derby for many years lol and its 'a bit black over Bill's mothers' as there is a storm brewing... In Birmingham a 'writing engine' is a pencil and 'catch a bab' is to'get up the duff'. I do use a rhyme site when writing - wish there was an approved one - I found 'son' rhymes with 'one' which I struggle to understand lol. hugs Jan xx

Yes, Jan, these rhyming sites are useful when you're stuck for options, but I treat them with kid gloves (which rhymes with cloves, apparently). Viv x

Regional pronunciation is fine Viv, what is not is the recent prevalent use of 'contri' and 'distri' as prefixes.Here is my note to my recent poem of the same name..CON & DIS are prefixes to, for example English words like TRIBUTE.'Contri and Distri' are not prefixes to any known English word, they are 'madhatter syllabic nonsense' straight our of Alice in Wonderland. Also the incorrect usge of 'haitch' instead of 'aitch' seems to have been wrongly introduced by someone eg one does not pronounce 'NHS' n ..haitch,,s.,Interesting blog Viv accents make the English what it is,'the' global language.Best wishes with your creative endeavours.Rgds Brian

Yes, Brian, the 'aitch' issue is an ongoing feud,and I still have problems with 'an hotel' which crops up a lot, but don't mind 'an historic occasion', which is weird, since they both start with an aitch but I can only put it down to a contextual thing. The language is morphing more quickly with the internet, but given the chance I would mount a crusade against the increasing use of the phrase 'could of' instead of 'could have'- Hate it. Viv
