One Brief Moment

Look...See how long nights are drawing in. Dreary birdsong gradually abates - Opaque dusk grows dim; And just outside the creaky little garden Gate, Stood opposite the empty wood Where the vacant threshold silently awaits, I pause, when, resonating quietly back... I now hear... Far distant echoes of my glorious childhood Tugging like a Siren upon my ear. With a heartfelt pang I turn to move, Before my staring should offend some Old friends ghost To manifest in vengeful affright, Towards the comforting sanctuary proffered By the warm kitchens weak neon light... That sneaks out from behind the half-shut Door, But held - Transfixed! Brought from wither-not-where to this one Small place - Staid... As if caught in a state of heavenly grace, Conversing to the soft wind in harmonious Angelic rapport:- Thus soothes like enchantments waves... Rolling gently up to repeatedly break upon Magical banks girdling Nivians lakeshore. For what be this odd muse That upon my aging senses does so readily Enthuse... And to my inner soul so inextricably Implore? Ahhh...But this much I may be allowed to Say, Before darkly gathering skies extinguish Over weak flames of the last spluttering Ray, Perhaps it is our inner voice That seeks out the solitudes of Tranquilities choice - To witness and record and dutifully store... Those rare and fleeting moments We all too briefly adore.

Yes! Far distant echoes of my childhood...the power they have to carry us back in time...and the emotions they evoke. Much of my writing has been inspired by these unforgettable rare and fleeting moments. This is another masterpiece, John. Thank you for sharing. Elaine

Hi there! I read your poem and it really did catch my eye pretty fast with the first few words in the poem. I am writing a piece called "Those Memories" and it's supposed to remind people of how memories are supposed to be something that they can fall back on and for them not to forget those memories. I am thinking of selling this piece. Is it okay if I use some of your words from this poem in my piece? I am 17 years old looking to find my own way. Maybe we can talk some day!

Yes, agreed...there are too many eye appealing brief moments overlooked because they seem insignificant, but when taken in by a poet of your talent, can only be described as beautiful.

Everything is temporary and permanent, including the night, birds, small gardens, golden childhood, love, old friends, neon, shelter, wind, angels, banks, aging, fire, soul, worship and so on, which are like the flashing meteors in the night sky, or like the hanging sun. Life is short, but eternal, just like poetry.

Upon arising I threw open the window and shouted out "Any of you lubbards fancy a spot of island-hopping! Apparently it was all highly embarrassing...ah well! Ah, moments like these sometimes poke a hole in the membrane separating present from past, and the memories rush refreshed into our mind. Ah, I think, when was the last time I thought of that? Great poem, John, that filled me with delight.

Hi, Kathleen. Always nice to see you putting in an appearance here. Congratulations on your birthday - And I hope you have a lovely sojourn! You are quite correct of course about solitude being a prerequisite for good writing...It is absolutely essential! I suspect there are millions of gifted writers out there who will never know just how good they could be, primarily because they cannot get the time and space to be one...Such are the pressures of life! My very best regards, Kathy...And my warmest wishes! :) john
