What Is a Moment

What is a moment?
It’s a flash before your eyes.
A moment comes and goes
before you realize;
A moment is what drives you
with every breath you take
and can be your crowning glory
or can be your worst mistake.

A moment is that instant
when you turn left or right,
and if you make the wrong turn
you may never see the light...
or a moment is that flash
which tells you to stop or start,
where you make a special friendship
or you have one torn apart.

And so a moment is important
for every step that you put forward,
there’s a million moments every day
to offer shame or a reward,
and you should treasure every moment
that goes dashing through your mind,
for a moment’s not immortal,
it is swift but well defined.

So what is a moment?
It’s your birth, your death, your soul,
the very thing that drives you,
which sometimes you can’t control;
but moments are so precious,
they are seeds that you have sown...
from your birth until your death,
each moment is your very own.

Thank you Viv for your kind words. It did take me a bit more than a moment to write this though - Lindsay

Very poignant Lindsay and very true. The last two lines sum it all up, for sure. "from your birth until your death, each moment is your own." This piece of yours shows lots of insight, as does most of your work. Best to you. Diane L.

Lindsay, another gem, one with exceptional depth. The concluding lines are superb: "they [moments] are seeds you have sown...from your birth until your death, each moment is your very own." Oh, so true; I love it! (Just as I love "No Food Rule.")

Very nice! I like outwardly directed poems that touch on philosophical themes like this. You are writing for the reader. That's the sign of a mature poet. So many poets never reach this point. Your spelling, grammar and punctuation are flawless. If you ever need any help with other technical parts, like meter, I'll be glad to help you tweak.

Lindsay, I like this poem, and how deep you went, intriguing my mind, with what a moment is, through your perspective. I have so many of these moments. I guess, that's life, in one word. MOMENT... Hope you are enjoying the first day of 2015... Love Linda

G'day Linda... thanks for your comment. I guess that even though a moment is an instant, they can change the direction of every individual. Thanks again Linda-Lindsay
