A Sonnet On Ageing

Something in the newspaper that I saw I have to say, it made my blood run cold, and I had never noticed it before but just confirmed that I am getting old. The latest music chart, the top twenty, for downloads, since the singles chart has gone full of the strangest names, yes there were plenty what made me sad , I'd only heard of one. Marshmello, Benny Blanco, Travis Scott, Loud luxury & Brando, who are they? Peep & XXXtentacion, weird or what? George Ezra, I knew him, which made my day. I sat and pondered where the years all go to the consoling strains of Matt Monro.

Here's some solace: My kids and grandkids don't listen to anything composed after about 1990. They tell me that all the good music was written and played before that. So why should WE listen to the junk that they're cranking out these days! We're not getting older. We're just getting smarter! LOL. Best wishes, Gershon

As I pat your back and murmur, I know, I know ... Actually, I don't care that I don't know who the heck the current music stars are so much as I care that what they do is called music. What makes me weepy is when I see a musician I grew up on, still love listening to and get HARD HIT by how OLD he/she is. I'm sure every person who is allowed to age has felt such sad twinges, yepper - I'm sure. Enjoyed your poem, your purging. Poetry hugs ... CayCay

G'day Viv … the names match some of the music Viv. Meaningless drivel, and as for rap (spelt with a silent C), I'm showing my age as I wind up my His Master's Voice record player - thanks Viv - Lindsay

At least Elvis is still alive! There is something special about a melody we can hum! We live in a world where chaos is having an effect on everything. Love your poetry. You are a unique genius, sir.
