Bloggers Photo

Andrea Dietrich grew up in Iowa and now resides in Utah with a spouse and two cats. She has two grown children and six grandchildren. Having graduated BYU with a Spanish major/ESL minor, she has spent most of her adult life teaching. It wasn't until 2000 that she began writing in earnest and discovering her "niche" as a writer of lyrical poetry. The internet opened up a new world for her, and she has spent two decades now participating in poetry clubs, acting as a judge of poetry contests for various magazines, for the website Shadow Poetry, and for Poetry Soup.

Ms. Dietrich has won numerous awards, as well as the title Poet of the Year 2008, from the Yahoo group, Poetry For Thought. In addition, she has won prizes from the magazines Lucidity, Bell's Letters, Art with Words, Poets at Work and SP Quill, the magazine for which she wrote grammar and poetry articles as well as movie reviews and for which she acted as poetry editor for the head editor Marie Summers for six years. Many of her poems appeared in Shadows Ink, a yearly published series of chapbooks of award winning poetry as well as in numerous other anthologies. Her short stories appeared in many issues of SP Quill and much of her poetry was published in eight chapbooks (no longer sold online).

Since coming to Poetry Soup, Ms. Dietrich has been both contest sponsor and winner of numerous contests. In 2010, her poem "Cinder Girl" was first place winner of Soup's International contest (these contests are no longer held).  A song was created from her lyrics "Honeymoon Serenade" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WDWxc4cpHDc) and two movies have been made featuring the poetry of Andrea Dietrich: "A Tale of Fire and Ice" (a 4 min. Z-Film Fest Project, 2014) and the full length movie "Six Days of Sistine" in which 20 poems of Ms. Dietrichs serve as the thoughts of two characters played by Jamie Campbell Bower and Elarica Johnson (directed by Richard J. Perry, 2019) https://www.imdb.com/title/tt7710360/

When I first started out and was creating a lot more contests than I have time for today, I remember a few contests in which I gave prizes. A few times I gave one of my chapbooks to my winners. Now the number of my chapbooks has dwindled to almost nothing and I do not give prizes; however, I think it is so nice to see other contest sponsors giving out prizes and some that are very generous. This is just a shout out of gratitude for the judges who care so much that they give sweet prizes to their winners. One time I recieved a walking stick carved by the sponsor himself! Imagine that! He sent a walking stick by mail.  I can't even remember his name any more, but he is a wonderful poet who is long gone from the site. That prize was very special to me, for he carved it by hand.

Recently I received a book of Emile Pinet's called Navigating the Backwaters of My Mind. It's a beautiful book very well organized and includes the forms of some of our very own Soup poets such as our Dear Heart, Connie Wong, Vermillion Scythe, Greg Barden and  myself included, so I want to thank Emile here for that and to let everyone know how nice he was to include poems he wrote using forms of his poetry friends.

Carolyn Devonshire is another most gracious contest host who has been gifting prizes of jewelry to her winners. I was fortunate enough to get some jewelry from Carolyn, and it was gorgeous! Thanks so much, Carolyn. You are also a dear friend.

I am sure others of you in the past have given very nice prizes as well. Forgive me if I forgot to mention anyone in particular!  Even cash awards have been given. So thanks to these kind judges and thanks for ALL the sponsors of  contests that inspire us to write, regardless of material prizes or mere glory! To those sponsors who are trying to be fair and considerate judges, i say thanks so much for all you do.

Incidentally, I have finally read the clerihews entered in my challenge. Most of them were well written. I only disqualified one poem, in fact, for not writing an actual clerihew. I should have the placement of winners posted tomorrow!

Wonderful blog and tribute, Andrea! Yes, we have so many wonderful contest sponsors who inspire us with their themes and praise, along with some who offer prizes as an incentive. They are so generous, and I express thanks to them too...a beautiful ring from Carolyn, books from Emile, and quite a while back, $50.00 cash. Thanks to all of you!

Bravo, Andrea. So many of us will echo your praise to our many contest sponsors who dedicate their time and passion to continually challenge us. I too was also extremely appreciative to receive: praise, jewelry from Carolyn, books from Emile, and a subscription renewal from Mark Toney. Every day is like Christmas at Poetry Soup.

Let me look at this old address book of mine. Ok, I found it. His name is CALEB SMITH. In Arkansas! I am going right now to see if his poems are still up!
Date: 2/3/2019 3:38:00 PM
Wow! A hand-carved walking stick is quite a special gift, Andrea. Thanks to all contest sponsors for the time it takes to read and the agony of ranking entries. I usually like all entries and the current contest is no different. Congrats to Emile on his book! Hugs, Carolyn

It's a shame Caleb left the site, Andrea. Sometimes people return, so we can still watch for him.

I think I have his name somewhere . Let me go check. He was a survivalist and he and his family were going to live in the woods and not depend on modern technology. I sure miss him because his writing was outstanding.

A while ago, sponsors sometimes offered premium memberships. One time I made a Christmas Stocking for a winner. But that walking stick sounds awesome!

Hear, hear Andrea, such a lovely well deserved tribute to all sponsors who put their precious time and effort into these wonderful contests. I have benefited enormously from entering contests that have opened up my mind to write in poetry forms I have never used or heard of before, so I would like to thank you all for that too. Kindest thoughts Ann xx

Well said Andrea, we all lead busy lives but the sponsors find time to run a contest. The contests sometimes help to awaken our dormant muses. Lovely tribute. Tom

Andrea, this is such a nice blog, yes the sponsors have been so generous with their prizes and I thank them all for that too. I am not sure if you recall, I used to give Certificates of Achievement in my contests a long time ago. Poets said they liked them, I even got a soupmail recently from someone who came across one of the certificates when cleaning up and how it made them happy finding it again.
